She came out on stage as the audience was bewildered as house lights came up and set began going down despite their screams, stomps and howls for her reappearance. She explained that she is having voice problems and couldn't risk singing more. The audience graciously accepted her explanation. I'm not familiar enough with her music to have recognized whether or not she was holding back. My impressions were that the concert was energetic, bright and spirited. I thought Isobel was a longer song than what she actually sang. Words were resonated so much that lyrics were impossible to follow. The light show was perfect for her kind of music. Altogether an enjoyable experience, even for one who is not a particular Bjork fan. Plus plus-- a real life meeting with ectophile Joel Siegfried. I'm not a huge fan of Sam Brown's _April Moon_, her best-known album, and _Stop!_ has a few good cuts on it, but _43 Minutes_ is consistently a delight. Lively yet mellow, great pop. My introduction to her music was _Building the Colossus_, which I totally love. She seems strong, yet vulnerable, a little soul-searching but fairly well-rooted. I mentioned my interest in her to a fellow Siberry fan and he said he didn't care for her stuff. "It's like Jane Siberry being interpreted by Stephen King. Scary stuff. Warn the kids." I had no idea what he was talking about until I lucked into my Happy CD collection and saw the cover artwork and started reading through the lyrics of Ecto, Rhodesongs I and II...and I can where he's coming from. Where do these themes of demons, pain, insanity and torment stem from? I'm sure this stuff has been discussed to death, so if folks want to write to me off-list, that's fine. Thanks. Thanks. Count me in on this Happy history lesson! I've only managed to get three of Happy's CDs in Britain so far, we seem relatively starved of ecto-culture (apart from Kate of course, hallowed be her name). When I was a the Kate Convention last year, some incredibly enthusiastic individual was running around throwing out Happy sampler tapes. From those, and the CDs I've picked up since, I detected a strong theme of insanity, torment and psychological introspection. Any clues, or at least pointers as to where information on her history could be found, would be much appreciated. Oh well, back into the sidelines for me again, I've got a computer game to write... From my own experience, I may be able to shed a (very) little light on Hap's demons... Youth can be a rough time for the Different Ones. The gawky, shy ones, the Not-Popular, the out-group. And yes, Happy was not a popular kid amongst her peers. She went through the teases and tortures we inflict on each other, and her fertile imagination brought her the friends she needed - her monsters. They came to do her bidding, and were given life by her music. A slight digression: The Neurotic and The Creative Are One And The Same. Many of today's popular musicians were unpopular kids. While everyone else was making the scene, they were alone learning music. For a wonderful insight into this phenomena, Mann's _Tonio Kroeger_ is must reading. (Did I spell it right?) Anyway: Happy's monsters are her friends; they helped her cope with a cruel world. Her music was also a great release, and she focussed her introspection and lonliness into its creation. Not so long ago, Happy blossomed from her sadness. The success of _Warpaint_ led to an Equipoise in her life. She forgave humanity, so to speak, and accepted the balance of darkness and light in us all. Now she may look back on her youth: "If I Ever See That Girl Again"... Blessed are the different. When humanity cherishes its variety, we'll all have come a long way towards growing up! Well, thanks for your ears. It's been a while since I posted, but I'm here every night reading Ecto. I still have about 300 letters stuffed in Eudora, but hey, someday I'll get caught up! Take care! Robert the Ectophile ------------------------------ From: mcb@postmodern.com (Michael C. Avenues in S.F. only go up to 48th. (Streets only go up to the low 30s, so it couldn't be that, either.) The "th" makes it likely that the address is on 20th Ave., not 22nd.
