WOW! little nice bonus for me. nice song, nice album, but that little bit of knowledge is nice to know. anyone else have this album? it was kinda weird because i KNOW this must predate SOLACE (or at least my discovery of SOLACE) because i have vague recollections of listening to the balloon album and going "what a pretty female singer, wonder who she is...sarah mclachlan, never heard of her." it haven't felt this odd since i discovered that TORI sang back on a the sandra bernhardt album that i have (can't make her out, but she is credited, so you know she is there). and i have to say that all of you have heard more THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH stuff on the radio than i ever have. other than the stuff i played on my own radio station, i have never heard a single TBS song on the radio in my life (hmmmm...maybe one, but for the life of me, i can't be positive). and the cover of GIRLFRIEND was not by STACEY Q but by a singer named PEBBLES in the mid 80's. i don't know if she was the first to sing that song, but i remember her singing it. STACEY Q on the other hand, has recently popped up with a BEST OF album! those of you who cannot remember her, you must have blinked around 1987. she had a minor hit song "TWO OF HEARTS" and a smaller hit with "WE CONNECT" uh huh. it was (as they say) BIG IN THE CLUBS. she also appeared in TWO (count them T-W-O) episodes of the hit show FACTS OF LIFE, as (you guessed it) a POP SINGER. tootie wanted to be a singer in those episodes, and she was a fellow singer who had made it big. her name on the show. CINNAMON. prior to going solo, STACEY Q was in the band SSQ. her new BEST OF album (which is rather ridiculous as she only had TWO albums) is featuring her as THE QUEEN OF RETRO-POP. hmmmmm.... now why the hell do i know so much useless infomation? because i know ALL the one hit wonders. well not all, but damn i know a lot. after all i am a CHILD of the EIGHTIES. i keep on meaning to make a ONE HIT WONDER mix tape, i but i don't have enough of the music, anyone want to help me? i do have STACEY Q's first album, so i could contribute TWO OF HEARTS, along with FLOCK of SEAGULLS' "I RAN" as well as TOTAL CEOLO's "I EAT CANNIBALS". i would love to get ahold of haircut 100's LOVE PLUS 1. and REGINA's BABY LOVE. what else? you would think i would get more done with all my spare time, but no, i just sit around doing nothing. and you can tell by my pay check. not quite as bitter and angst filled, as i seem to have started a new project of mine.... irvin - ---------------------------------- two of hearts, two hearts that beat as one..... Better late than never, huh? It must be four or five years since Shepherd Moons. Anyway, the new CD is slated for a Nov. 21 Canadian release and Dec. 5 for the States. It will be titled _The Memory of Trees_ and the track list is as follows: 1. The Memory of Trees 2. Anywhere Is 3. Pax Deorum 4. Athair ar Neamh 5. From Where I Am 6. China Roses 7. Hope Has a Place 8. Tea-House Moon 9. Once You Had Gold 10. La Sondadora 11. On My Way Home This information courtesy of the Enya newsgroup. All mistakes are mine. I for one will be looking forward to this new release. I used to be a big fan of Enya but don't listen to her all that much these days. Probably because I'm a little burnt out on her present albums and have been patiently waiting for something new! A brief, fairly unannounced visit in advance of her upcoming tour. It was an acoustic special night, with several bands/ solo artists appearing. First up, and almost finished by the time we got there, was Ronnie Taheny, an Australian solo performer. She has a very powerful voice, and played both piano and guitar. Worth keeping an eye out for. I believe she has a CD out. Next up were Redwood, a 4 piece band - drums, twin acoustic guitars, electric bass. Trying soooo hard to be Pearl Jam/Nirvana. And they were good at it, but a bit wearinbg after a while, especially as we were sat on the floor about 3 feet from the speakers. Next up was Z (pronounced the American way). Solo female performer. Very very scary. That's about all I can say! Then it was Aimee. She was looking very relaxed, if painfully thin. Backing band consisted of her producer (John somebody?) on electric guitar and MiniMoog, a guy called Chuck on drums and Martin on bass. These last 2 had been drafted in for the evening, and Aimee said they didn't know most of the songs. Indeed Martin had the chords written on a pad in front of him! Aimee's voice was as gorgeous as ever! Aimee opened with a new song (at least I didn't recognize it - assume it's off "I'm With Stupid"). Then the rest of the evening was requests, which (un)surprisingly enough were all off of "Whatever". She played "I Should've Known", "4th of July", "Mr Harris" and "Stupid Thing". During "Should've Known" she forgot the words, and throughout bass and drums were picking up the backing about half way through each song! Very relaxed and informal evening. All too soon, her slot was over, as there was another band to come on. However, we all created so much noise that she came back to play one more, "Sugar Coated" which again I assume is off the new album. Ended with a huge amount of sub-grung guitar work from John the producer. So we trooped off into the cold night. Excellent show. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the Forum when she plays there on the 24th of this month, but hopefully there'll be some more dates. Yes, there are limits on the playing time and number of songs a disc can have to qualify for the British singles chart -- I think it's 25 minutes and four songs. An artist can certainly release a 40-minute "single" if he/she wants to; it simply won't be eligible to chart. However, I don't think that's why bands release multi-part singles. Those we can chalk up to simple record company greed, if you ask me. And there's a special circle of hell reserved for the person who dreamed up the idea of "limited edition" singles. Simultaneously anticipating and dreading the release of Tori's new album (because collecting all of those "limited editions" is such a chore -- but the music is soooo good!), - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ From: "Stuart P. Hey, if it's a great single, than > perhaps it'll make me want to buy the album. (Are the other songs any > good?) Well, the single won't convince you to buy the album. It only has "It's Oh So Quiet" and an Icelandic version of "You've Been Flirting Again," one of my least favorite tracks off of _Post_. However, that should not stop you from getting _Post_, because it is a wonderful album. Bjork has perfected what she was trying to do on _Debut_. And, while I love _Debut_, I never listen to it anymore but find myself continually going back to _Post_. _Post_ isn't perfect. I usually skip the laid-back tunes like "Cover Me" and "You've Been Flirting Again" because they just don't seem to go anywhere. And, I will never appreciate the ambient weirdness of "Headphones." But those songs are more than made up for by the rest of the CD where Bjork incorporates techno, disco, synth-pop, lush orchestration, and big band with her own unique style, creating some of the most original sounding music I've heard in quite a while. Hey, if it's a great single, than >> perhaps it'll make me want to buy the album. (Are the other songs any good?) Although I can't comment on _Debut_, I'll jump in the fray here a bit and offer a couple comments on _Post_. I wasn't sure what to make of the album for a little while having heard nothing by her before. And the eclectic nature of her music tends to take a while to grow on you. With that said, of the 11 tracks on the disc, I could live without 3 of them. Those being "Army of Me" (the opening track), "The Modern Things", and "Enjoy". They are mostly dance songs which in and of itself is fine, but just not for me. The rest of the disc features much more orchestration (viola, cello) which I tend to like quite a bit more. "It's Oh So Quiet" obviously is a great tune. It could have been a bit longer for my taste though. I think it only runs about 3 1/2 mins. I really like the way Bjork sings on "Isobel", a longer song with the sweeping orchestration coming thru, but with lyrics that beg for some kind of interpretion. Although most of the song's lyrics are like that. "Possibly Maybe" is possibly my favorite song on the album. ;-) I like how the keyboard playing just kind of hangs in the background giving a haunting quality to the song. The tune "I Miss You" while again being somewhat of a dance song, features the trumpet and sax that make the song listenable to me. And the harpsichord on "Cover Me" goes very well with Bjork's style of singing. The final track "Headphones" is a quiet, dreamy type of song that finishes up the album quite nicely. So, to sum up, I don't regret buying the CD. I don't listen to it all that often, but when I do, I like it. I seem to like it best when I'm at work with the headphones on. It just doesn't hit me the same way at home with the stereo. I'm sure mileage will vary for people on this one.
