ANYWAY are they ecto? ummmm maybe, the beautiful south do have a female singer, who for awhile wasn't even listed as a part of the band (briana corrigan, fabulous voice, a little girly, but beautiful). she became a full fledge memeber by the second labum and left by the fourth one and was replaced by jackie i forget her last name. the thing about the housemartins was their brilliant cutting dry witted lyrics. (what with songs like people who grinned themselves to death, we're not deep, me and the farmer...). perhaps a british version of they might be giants? but not quite as goofy. hmmmm....a very BRITISH group. the beautiful south, with the use of briana's delicious voice augmented the lyrics even more. their first single was a big hit (and had a fab video) SONG FOR WHOMEVER in the UK, i believe. lyric samples go something like this: i love you from the bottom of my pencil case, i love you in the songs, i write and sing...oh shirley, oh deborah, oh julie, oh jane, i wrote so many songs about you, i forgot your name....you made me so much money i wrote this song about you..... the first album WELCOME to the beautiful south had what some people deemed an offensive cover (a man lighting a cigarette, a woman with a gun in her mouth next to each other) and was later replaced by a picture of a teddy bear. the second album (CHOKE) was darker more sardonic than sarcastic. the third (0898 Beautiful south) was more rhythm orientated, and featured great surreal artwork in the booklet. the fourth album (MIAOW) is unavailable in the US (never was released here as elektra dropped them), not as good, it still has some winning songs, and also had two different covers, (the original had a picture of a dog listening to a record player, and RCA said it was a copyright infrigment...). you can pick up MIAOW via import from canada if you really want it. there is available a BEST of album available in the US, so check it out if you so desire. it is called "best of the beautiful south, carry on up the charts" and features a big ole sticker on the cover saying "the 3rd fast selling album in the UK!" like that will make people randomly pick up the cd. perhaps the record company should funnel their funds into, ummm, well getting the songs on the air so that people will hear it instead of meaningless hype. it is amazing, but despite the fact that not everyone knowing them, whenever i introduce them to the beautiful south, they fall in love with them (ummm...sound familiar ecto fans?). a week after you introduce them to the beautiful south you can hear them whistling their songs under their breathe (damn catchy stuff). and if no one inside the US knows them, shouldn't that qualify them to be listed as "alternative?" and yes suzanne vega is folk, but folk should be listed under alternative. i mean michelle shocked made it into the SPIN book. and don't say suzanne is too popular to be alternative. what the hell is madonna? and no sarah mclachlan isn't that alternative but then neither is tori amos i think. sorry to ramble so much about the beautiful south. if you want more info feel free to email. their is a mailing list for them too (and other housmartin spin offs). i used to be on it, but i haven't gotten anything from them, which means i must have unsubscribed in my fall email cleaning. hmmmm...silly me. if you want info about it, email me and i will dig the address up for you. wish i could see the beautiful south live.... still bitter and angst filled irvin ps. anyone know mary karlzen? just picked up her album for $5 and sorta am hooked. don't know why. also got throwing muses first album for $6! wow bonus week. perhaps i shouldn't be so angst filled. pps. it is my 2nd anniversary tomorrow. which i realize isn't that long in comparison to many of you ectos, but since i tend to ramble A LOT, i thought i would throw that in. also that fact that for a gay man, it pretty much translates into 20 years. None of us has the time to keep up with every mailing list we'd like, so it would be nice to have a centralized source for basic, factual information such as album/single release dates, concert dates, etc. If we kept the information factual, it hopefully wouldn't slow down the cross- posting from other interesting mailing lists. For example, things like rumors and stories wouldn't be covered by the info page I am proposing. However, the info page would help all of us keep up with important musical events of the world. Hi fellow ectofolk, Just want to followup Jeff H.'s recommendations on seeing Heather Nova if you get a chance. I was a bit surprised to see her play such a small venue as the 7th Str. Entry in Minneapolis, but it gave us a chance to see her up nice and close. ;-) As Jeff had mentioned, most of the songs were from Oyster, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear her do a cover of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane". She did a damn fine job on it. I picked up Jonatha Brooke and the Story's latest CD _Plumb_ over the weekend and was immediately taken by it. Having never heard any of her stuff before, I found it to be a real refreshing sound. Some of the tracks, especially "Inconsolable" (?), and "Is This All?" (I think, I don't have the CD in front of me, so I'm not entirely sure of the exact titles) really hit a spot in my somewhat wounded soul. Real fine stuff and I regret not having seen Jonatha when she was in Minneapolis recently. I know Cathy went to it and I'm sure it was a fine show. Another show I missed: Natalie Merchant played last nite at the Northrop Auditorium I believe, with the Innocence Mission opening up. Drat it! I picked up The Keep this weekend. It's finally hitting the stores. I almost didn't recognize it when I saw it. You just never know what to expect from Happy album covers do you? I like it, it just looks much more gothic than I expected (and I didn't expect it to be so green!) Electric Foetus here in Minneapolis had it--plus it's on sale for 20% off (as is their whole stock) until Halloween. I like it--my only complaint is that like RhodeSongs its consistently too quiet--but well worth the price for O Holy Night and Look for the Child. The new version of Temporary and Eternal is also pretty awesome. I also picked up the This Mortal Coil boxed set--I've been debating getting this for years--I already had It'll End in Tears and Filgree & Shadow on album, then replaced those on CD and was having trouble justifying buying the boxed set for just two of the four cds, but I can't believe I waited so long to get Blood. Everyone of their albums is excellent--and the 4th CD of the original songs is also interesting, though I'm not sure how much I'll actually listen to it. I certainly would rther hear Liz Frasier or Kate sing ANother Day rather than Roy Harper. Also picked up Jane Kelly Williams album, Tapping the Wheel. This is definitely ecto-fodder--imagine Tori Amos crossed with Victoria Williams and you might begin to get the idea--maybe throw in a generous helping of Jewel's naivette too. The song, SOmebody's Breaking In is superb--though a friend of mine said, "She's definitely been listening to her Tori." I think that may just be a case of she's playing piano and has a high voice--must be influenced by Tori, type thinking--but then I think all grunge bands sound alike. Guess it just depends on what you listen to. Most of Jane Kelly's lyrics are much more down-to-earth than Tori's--though sometimes a little too simplistic. And many of the songs (more than I think I would actually prefer), have her on guitar rather than piano. I think her piano playing is much stronger--she's a classically-trained pianist and a self-taught guitarist. Let's just say you can tell the difference. Still a pretty solid album with a few great moments. Another mention for you Alison Moyet fans out there--I picked up the import CD Single of Solid Wood the other day--it has a new song Blue, that sounds pretty typical of the songs on Essex, and a new version of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face that is much prettier than the version on Singles. It's much dreamier and relaxed--though I think its the same vocal track.
