I hate Jennifer Warnes' versions of Cohen's songs--I have very little tolerance for rough things that I love being polished over and that's what her versions are for me. She's got a great Mariah Carey-like honeyed voice that takes the edges off everything and the style of her singing undoes the songs for me--makes them soul-less, stylized, suddenly mainstream pop. Too carefully "crafted". They need to be rough and slightly awkward, which is why I like Tori's "Famous Blue Raincoat" and Suzanne Vega's "The Story of Isaac". And of course, Cohen's own versions. There's also a really interesting disc of Swedish female singers doing Cohen covers in Swedish. It's a little smooth but still has a edgy life of its own. I wish I could have found this on disc. So here's my humble submission: Kate Jacobs. I picked up her record _(What About Regret)_ because the cover somehow struck me favorably. This is a bad habit I have -- I sometimes judge by the cover, then look for interesting song titles, and/or producers or other names I recognize. I bought the Catheads record because I was absolutely enchanted by the notion of a song called "Power, Love and Pizza." Nor was I disappointed -- but I digress. Anyway, I promptly noticed that it was on Bar/None, a damn cool label in my eyes, and that it featured Dave Schramm, who used to be in Yo La Tengo. Cool! Kate's voice reminds me by turns of Lisa Germano and Anne Richmond Boston; sort of a little fragile. Lyrics on first listen seemed pretty good. Nice balance between serious/emotional/confessional and touches of humor. Music a little more country-tinged than I usually go for, but very pleasant. I've only heard it once so far, so I'm not quite sure how many of these songs will bury their way into my brain, but I think it could well be a keeper. The comparison to Victoria is spot-on, especially on her 2nd album (What About Regret). If she plays near you, she's a must see. Her 1st album (The Calm Comes After) and What About Regret are both on Bar-None records. ***** You should keep an eye out for her earlier (first?) album, _The Calm Comes After_. (i think it was #3). it was directed by angelo and david lynch. angelo by the way has worked with david a lot. he produced numerous soundtracks for him, including blue velvet, the two twin peaks soundtracks, and i think wild at heart. anyway anyone know what david lynch is up to now? so if you like smokey ethereal music check out julee's two albums, or the twin peaks sound tracks, (though i like the FIRE WALK WITH ME one better, though the movie wasn't that good). if you want something more upbeat, see if you can find julee's single to the song "ROCKIN BACK INTO YOUR HEART" or something of that sort. has a neat discoeyremix. irvin ------------------------------ From: cstack@ix.netcom.com (Chris Stack ) Date: Sun, 29 Oct 1995 20:12:03 -0800 Subject: Doubting Thomas In response to Neal's request for info on Doubting Thomas: I caught Doubting Thomas on New Years Eve (I think) a couple of years ago at the Laughing Seed vegetarian restaurant in Asheville NC.
