Beautiful South is on tour of the US right now, without the female singer though, who is pregnant. They put on a fantastic show at the 9:30 Club last week. A little more than no one showed up, as the show, with $20 tickets, sold out very quickly. (The 9:30 Club is a pretty horrible place to see a sold out show.) Another Nea/il(l)(e) popped up, with yet another spelling! Where else in the universe could you find such a collection. (Welcome Neill!) So, this Neill suggested that the jamming of October Project in concert grew from the jamming that led to the development of the songs. I'd disagree (because I'm contrary), and because October Project guitarist David, quoted in the article, is not the one guilty of the excessive and embaressing guitar solo. That's the special guest musician, explicitly not a member of October Project. So I question whether his obnoxious solo could have been a part of the original jamming. DOUBTING THOMAS - I forgot to mention in my very brief disappear fear review that the opening band was Doubting Thomas. I don't know where they are from, but for some reason felt like it was Virginia. They were a female duet, with a kind of rough voiced lead singer and guitarist, and a smoother voiced harmonizer, hand percussionist, harmonica player and violinist. When there voices blended they occasionally reminded of the Indigo Girls, or even Betty (just in the blending, not the sound), or early disappear fear. The songs were personal and catchy, and occasionally quite haunting. I don't know a thing about these too, but I was very impressed. Anyone heard of them? The album is actually called "Floating Into The Night", I believe. An indispensible disc. Some of the music appeared in "Industrial Symphony #1: the dream of the broken hearted". The video also includes Julee's version of "Up in Flames" which I believe was sung on the soundtrack of ... damn, I forgot the name of the movie: the Lynch movie with Laura Dern and Nicholas Cage... by someone else. > Julee released a second cd, "The Voice of Love," also arranged by Angelo B. > All songs are great, including standouts "Until The End of the World" (from > the Wim Winder movie), and the post-Peak "Questions In A World of Blue." > Julee is on my MustHave list for ecto-recommendations. I don't recall that song being in the Wim Wenders film. She did, however, have the song "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears" in the soundtrack. "Questions in a World of Blue" is not quite post-Peak: she sang it in "Fire Walk With Me", and the instrumental version of it was a key part of the music for the second season. I vaguely recall that she met Badalamenti on either a Broadway project or a movie score. I'm told that her usual voice is full-throated Broadway belting, and that the breathy sound was Lynch's idea. > I suppose you should also include a separate category for Angelo > (B)adalamanti, since you are finishing up the Bs. And of > course he produced the two Twin Peaks soundtrack albums. I would like to > know about any other Angelo work. The Faithfull album is wonderful -- exactly the right settings for her voice. He's done several other soundtracks, and I believe he appeared briefly on screen in the pilot to Lynch's comedy series "On the Air" (possibly the funniest half-hour ever to hit the small screen) playing the piano. (Note, BTW, the spelling of Badalamenti and Wenders. I normally wouldn't pick these nits, but I'd like them to be right in the Guide (I checked both names against the packaging for their videos to be sure).) - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ==== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Organizer, SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List \|| |/Joe Zitt's Home Page\| ------------------------------ From: "Joseph Zitt" Date: Sun, 29 Oct 1995 01:41:56 +0000 Subject: Re: The voice of October Project On 28 Oct 95 at 21:34, Neil K. IMNSHO, the album is far better than the Cohenheads are letting on. I very much like Peter Gabriel's "Suzanne", Elton John's "I'm Your Man", Willie Nelson's "Bird on a Wire", and Jann Arden's "If It Be Your Will". The only real musical massacres are by artists who I'd hoped would do better: Aaron Neville, Bono, and Sting & the Chieftains. One of these days I'll get around to putting the tracks I like on a tape with the tracks I like from "I'm Your Fan", as well as the beautiful versions of his songs by Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Jeff Buckley. - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ==== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Organizer, SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List \|| |/Joe Zitt's Home Page\| ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Sun, 29 Oct 1995 00:16:55 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: The voice of October Project Neil sez: > Neill?!
