Combination post: Well, it's official, I'm coming to Seattle this weekend. Will be in town from Saturday thru Tuesday night. If anyone wants to get together, send me some phone numbers (I don't think I'll have net access there). Our tentative plans include poking around town, a trip to Whidbey island, and maybe a quick jaunt to Vancouver, though that isn't set in stone. By the way, if any of you up there want anything from Texas, speak now or forever hold your peace. ;) Second item of business: A friend of mine just got back from two years teaching English in Japan and is looking for a job in the Minneapolis area. She's probably best suited for customer relations sort of work, but indicates she'd settle for nearly anything in the meantime. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions or connections that might help her get a job. EWS well, i found out this weekend i am still capable of spending ridiculously huge amounts of money in ridiculously small amounts of time, even when i'm supposed to be saving that money for a rully spiffy (tm) computer upgrade. anyway, part of my spending was on music, to whit: bel canto's "shimmering, warm and bright" - i've been looking for this album on cd ever since suzanne (hi suzanne! *hug*) sent me a taped copy. previously i'd only been able to find it for a $32 import price; i didn't buy it at the time, and when i realised it wasn't distributed on nettwerk and i *wasn't* going to get it for a reasonable price around here, i determined to buy it at even so horrid a price and returned to the store, only to find it was gone. anyway, this weekend i looked for it in several stores and still couldn't find it; in the last store i visited i went to look for it but four or five people were clustered around the Bs in the alternative (no, i don't know why they put it there either) section, so i couldn't see and decided not to bother, since i'd spent a lot already and it wasn't likely to be there anyway. so i went and picked up another cd i was looking for, and on my way back to the counter checked on bel canto again, since the area had cleared... and there it was for only $26! whee! this has got to be among my favourite albums overall. love it love it love it. peter gabriel's "birdy" soundtrack - this was the other cd i went to buy :) haven't listened to it much yet, but it sounds good so far (not a *big* surprise ;). interesting arrangements and snatches of his older songs, very nice music. heather nova's "oyster" - another one i've barely listened to yet, but first impression is "hmmm *ponder* yes, good" this probably means i will come to love the album, considering my usual range of reactions and where they lead. genesis' "duke", remastered edition - thanks to dirk, i knew about these remastered edition cds, and looked under genesis out of curiosity in the store. they had reams of remastered copies of "duke", but none of the others. anyway, also out of curiosity, i bought it. listening to the album, i notice small differences i can hardly pinpoint, but the truth is, my crappy stereo system (just an old distort-and-fuzzify-o-rama ghetto blaster) covers up any real improvements that have been made. can't wait until i get a better system and can appreciate differences like these, but it looks like that will have to wait for a few years. joan baez's "recently" - found this in a second hand store, and picked it up because 1) i've seen her mentioned on ecto, 2) there's a cover of biko (!) on it, and 3) i listened to it briefly at the listening station there and heard the opening bit of "asimbonanga". anyone who covers biko deserves to have their albums bought :) anyway, she's a bit to religious-ey in tone for me overall, but i certainly don't regret the purchase. quite nice. i also bought a couple of books - the calvin and hobbes tenth anniversary edition (i can't *believe* watterson has been writing them for so long! i remember when c&h was *new*! or maybe it was just new to me... but still, it seems amazing it's been around for that long. one of the greatest comics of all time, imo. also bought the lynda barry collection "it's so magic". another great comic of our times. is anyone else here (besides kevin of course) a fan of marlys and maybonne and the rest? :) *sigh* also made many other purchases that have served to disgust me with my ability to spend money. given the chance, i'd support the economy singlehandedly, i swear. i think i've learned something from this weekend, though, which is good. anyway, my wallet is empty and gasping again. bleah. oh, btw, fili and urs - i think i'm warming to julia fordham. in any case, the chorus of "manhattan skyline" has been worming its way through my head all bloody morning :) damon _/\_ Damon_Harper@mindlink.bc.ca __\ /__ "Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo, Vancouver, BC, CANADA \ / doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo." |/||\| - The Cranberries, http://www.dfw.net/~soulmate/damon/paukarut.html "Ode To My Family" ------------------------------ From: ariel_b@pipeline.com (Ariel Brennan) Date: Tue, 10 Oct 1995 16:21:57 -0400 Subject: Two recent purchases Ye gods, but I am broke. Anyway, I'm very pleased with both albums. I find "Tails" springs to my CD player more often, however. It's just charming; very pretty and saddish, but not depressive and downbeat. Has anyone else picked up this CD? Thoughts on it? Anyway, Plumb is interesting. Definately not folk, so why's it in the folk section? :) It's not quite what I expected, but it fullfilled expectations anyway (does that make sense?) The lyrics are oddly obtuse sometimes though. But I highly recommend the Cocteau's "Blue Bell Knoll" for cooking, especially chocolate chip cookies. Everything seems to come out perfect while humming "Carolyn's Fingers". As for cleaning, I normally listen to Disco, but on Monday I'd had too much caffeine and decided that wouldn't be a good idea. Happy's "Equipoise" just happened to be in my stereo, so I cleaned to that. Wouldn't recommend it, though. Took me about 5 times longer than usual and the whole cleaning process was much more confusing than it normally is. The Hapster is back with another stunning album of material from the vault. Like RhodeSongs, The Keep is generally acoustic and calm. There are some surprises! The material from the Echoes sessions is remarkable. These performances have to rank amongst her best, they are drop-dead gorgeous. Carl's bass playing infuses a new slant to the music, and it is remarkable. In "Summer", the Enyaesque overdubs are gone, replaced by a supply insistant bass rhythm that redefines the song. "Temporary And Eternal" becomes even more lyrical, if you can imagine! The Echoes cuts are primo! The new material will require a few more listens to grok. First impressions are favorable, of course, as I am an acolyte at the Church of Happy. "Life on Mars" is a space lullaby, and "Flash Me Up" is also mellow. The Yes medley features "Soon The Light" from The Gates Of Delirium (Relayer), which my wife and I had played at our wedding. Coincidence? I think not! The recording of "Oh Holy Night" is not the same one she did on Helen Leicht's WMMR program, but embellished with sweet vocal overdubs. This was always my favorite carol, and she does it supreme justice. She pulls out all her range on this one! The last three songs are from her first recording session eleven years ago, and they are vintage Happy. They would be quite at home on Rhodes vI and II. "Prey of the Strange" in particular is a vintage Happy lyric topic...scary! It's interesting to see how her vocal technique has improved over the years, although this recording is still phenomenal. All in all, a very pleasant listening experience. The cover features a half-shot of her face on a textured background. To her left is a gateway, the entrance to the keep (?). Colors are eerie green and yellow, the kind of colors you'll sometimes see after a storm. The back is a non-textured shot of the gate. The disc itself has her face (well, the same half from the front cover) and the gate printed on it; it's great! The booklet is up to the usual high standards Happy has had lately, great photography and some nifty writing by Kevin. Typical is Kev's blurb on "Summer": This song was originally written for the RhodeSongs collection. It seemed a perfect choice for the Echoes Show, with its lush keyboards and choral ambience. So of course it was done with two guitars and a bass." Unfortunately, the internet links mentioned on the cover feature the old ecto URL at helix and leave out the auralg section of their aol address. But they got this list right! And for those who care, the spine is printed properly! I love the album. But hey, you all knew that years ago! Guy) Date: Wed, 11 Oct 1995 05:18:40 -0700 Subject: New odds and ends Well after my Cowboy Junkies brief post (postette? postie? postlet?) I thought I'd mention a few new albums I've picked up over the past few months but haven't commented on yet. Jane Siberry - Maria. Well, I like it. Way more accessible than some of her more recent stuff. She works well with the jazz-inflected material, and it's interesting to hear her working with a completely new set of musicians. I'm not crazy about the extended quote that messes up "Oh my my my" - a certain 60s children's song that I loathed as a child and find annoying as an adult. But aside from that I quite like the disc. There's a popped-up radio-friendly remix of Loving Cup that I've heard also. I couldn't hear it well at the time (for those who know Vancouver I was driving through Stanley Park from the North Shore, through the bit where they've deliberately roughened up the road so people don't drive too quickly or something, and the noisy rattling of my poor Grocmobile made it very hard to hear the radio) but it reminded me a bit of the popped up version of k. d. lang's "Keep on moving" - squash the dynamic range, mix up the percussion and try to make the song sound as generic as possible. Kinda weird. I liked the album version much better! Lisa Gerrard - the Mirror Pool. Hm. Well, it's a very interesting album. Very rich, sumptuous orchestration. I dunno, though. Like some other folks have said here, I sorta miss Brendan Perry's dorky toneless Frank Sinatra wannabe singing and the pop tune angle he spins on some of DCD's more fun numbers. The Mirror Pool is way more Serious sounding than a lot of DCD. Well, call this groundling a heretic, but I like a little (largely unintentional) levity now and then! Still, I have listened to it a fair bit and some of the tracks (esp. the opening track) are quite amazing! Brainbox - Primordia. Basically a guy in Toronto who calls himself Tom Third and who must spend a hell of a lot of time playing with keyboards. His previous excursion, also on Nettwerk and under the less than salubrious moniker Brothers and Systems, was sorta of so-so disco pop as I recall. But with this album he's renamed himself and taken a more ambient-pop instrumental tack. And I really like it! I don't think it's particularly ecto as such, but he's created some pretty cool noises. It's not a sit and listen album, though - it's good for doing other stuff to. Less original than Future Sound of London, but with more catchy, accessible melodies and grooves. One of the tracks is on the Nettwerk compilation "Percolator", remixed in a better form. Cowboy Junkies - 200 more miles. Well I mentioned this one in a previous post. Good stuff. Moxy Fruvous - Wood. I've only had a couple listens to this one so far, but it seems a much more earnest album than their previous one. It's not going to be a huge hit, really. And it's been poorly promoted owing to the general lack of King of Spainish tracks on it. (though the Present Tense Tureen number is quite cute) It's okay, but hasn't moved me. Maybe I should listen to it more. ('cept I mailed it to Holly today :) Space Age Pop - volumes 2 and 3. I didn't get volume 1.These are compilations of some of the wackier big-band/orchestra stuff that was produced in the 50s and 60s, with an emphasis on percussion stuff. In the early days of stereo where they'd hard pan everything and make things zip from one speaker to the other. If you know Paolo Esquivel you get the general idea of most of these tracks. (there are a couple of Esquivel tracks on each album) Basically some of the weirder lounge music/teevee show music of that era. My flatmate hates it; I think it's brilliant! :) - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada phone: (604) 254-1002 * email: tela@tela.bc.ca web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ ------------------------------ From: "jeffrey hanson" Date: Wed, 11 Oct 95 08:46:03 cdt Subject: Armatrading/Werner in MN Hey Twin Cities Ectophiles: Joan Armatrading and Susan Werner will be at the State Theater in November (I think the 19th--not sure though).
