Was in the megaspendlotsobucks store yesterday and bought myself a computer (yeah!!!!!! ) yes I am in a state of serious EWS but I FEEL GREAT! Along with Mr. Pentium 75 I purchased Jane Siberry's "Maria" and Peter Hammill's "A Black Box" - I felt all warm and fuzzy blue in my heart because Happy's CD's were next to Hammill's in the rack - but I didn't see "The Keep" so I must write to AG and procure myself a copy. First listen to "Maria" was WONDERFUL - perfect environment to listen to it as well - last night in the beautiful city of Chicago was the most odd weather (well.... strike that.. odd for Chicago would maybe be a dust storm in February...) the wind was blowing 30 mph and the temperatures were in the high 60's I would figure, then there was a thunderstorm. Me sitting on my dining room floor putting together the computer, with "Maria" playing the background. I cannot describe it, not warm, not cold - not heart/ gut wrenching like WIWAB - but not without passion. Feels like a fine chilled Chardonay and a loaf of warm french bread, a fire going in the fireplace, and your favorite someone or a good book at your side. Bravo Jane ! I particularly liked "See the Child" upon the first and second listenings. A few more and I'm sure I will immerse myself in "Oh My My" I am entirely pleased with my new toy (my 'puter) , and now comes the arduous task of obtaining a REAL internet connection so I can visit all the websites I've wanted to see, and join in the IRC. Turns out that she was tonight's guest on "Just Passing Through," a weekly half-hour (I think it's only 30 minutes) of in-studio recordings/ interviews, and I came into it 18 minutes late. I did manage to get the last 12 minutes (including "Maybe an Angel" and another song that's not on _Oyster_) of music and interview on tape, but I'm rather frustrated that I missed more than half of the show! Dunno if it's repeated at all during the week. So then I'm driving back to my place and I'm flipping stations on the radio and stop on the horrible "mix 107," which is usually a nasty combo of cheesy 80's and 90's music and I pause because I'm kinda liking what I'm hearing, and after about 20 seconds I realize that that's 'cause it's a Sarah McLachlan song I'D NEVER HEARD BEFORE...that "I Will Remember You" or whatever it's called. It's shattered my worldview to have heard a Sarah song on a schlocky radio station, let alone have it be a Sarah song I've never heard before! Oh well, safe at home now with the radio off. ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. We ARE the genre. As Land of the Blind adopted the term to describe (among others) the kind of music they do, we will have to make do with using all the others as sub-genres. The trouble with coming up with terms to categorize music is it is pretty much impossible. It's like smelling mauve or listening to garlic. The only way to come close is to throw as many similarities and references to a given artist as possible. This got me thinking, and reminded me of a friend, that also used to be a "co-worker" for the company I used to work for. I quoted co-worker, because although we worked for the same company, he lives and works in Germany. While we were in Germany installing software, he was talking about - and looking forward to (as he should have) - his _annual_ vacation to Greece. What I remember most is that the company couldn't - nor did they even try - stopping him when the computer system wasn't "behaving" as normally. Over here, in the states, it's expected that vacation will be cancelled if our work isn't complete. Life in the States sometimes suck. Another thing that I thought was great that where we were (Buxtehude), all stores were closed by 4:00pm, except for Wednesday, where they stayed open until either 6:00 or 8:00. Saturday's, everything was closed by noon. The best, though, was that NOTHING was open on Sunday. Although we ("us" two software developers) were alone on Sunday, with literally nothing to do, I though it was great, and long for the time when that was the way in the States. I can remember when it was taboo for stores to be open on Sundays. Unfortunatley, this country has gotten away from "family values". There is little to no time to set aside for family. Heck, they even schedule little league games on Sunday! Anyway, sorry to ramble. I though the topic was interesting. Jeff ------------------------------ From: "Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Date: Mon, 2 Oct 95 19:02:11 EDT Subject: No good deed goes unpunished and other stories Thursday morning, I happened to dump three quarters at once into the farebox on the bus. Somehow, they jammed in the slot, and while getting them unstuck seemed like a simple matter from my vantage point, it seemed to be lost on the driver. To make a long story longer, the farebox was unable to accept anyone else's fare for the duration of the ride. I had inadvertently saved a number of my fellow transit riders some money. Somehow, I felt like I'd committed at least a low level of heroism. The good feeling was compounded when I managed to stay current on my email for the second day in a row. I should have anticipated that this would not be without its effects. The next day, I was enjoying an apparently non-atypical afternoon of multimooing and trying to get thru my email, with a bunch of replies thrown in for good measure, when all my windows suddenly crashed, and I was unable to get them up again. The same was true for anything else I tried to access using telnet. After a period of frustration, I gave up and went to make a phone call. All I could get after dialing was a rapid busy signal. I tried dialing some other numbers in different parts of town, and got the same result. Thwarted in accomplishing anything, I went home--arguably the only positive outcome in it all. I learned from the ten o'clock news that the whole phone network had crashed in the area I was in, due to a power outage in the vicinity of the switching center. I was barely within the perimeter of the affected area. In any event, I'm now way behind on the email; but I have prior experience in digging out of these dilemmas, so I think this may be survivable in spite of myself :-). Just a few comments on stuff: I find "cyberspace" a perfectly respectable term for the social spaces created by CMC, though it's not the term for it I'm most in the habit of using. "Ectophile" is, of course, a term of art peculiar to our own little corner of cyberspace, so I find it easiest to either describe Happy's musical genre as adult alternative, or liken her to Kate, Sarah, Jane, Tori, etc. In the early years of ecto, I told at least one record-store owner I first heard of Happy through "a computer bulletin board," on the assumption that this concept would be mre readily understood by those not heavily into the technical definition of mailing lists. WRT Loreena's music being used in _Jade_: this reminds me that Sarah's "I Will Remember You" is the closing theme from _The Brothers McMullen_, a movie well worth seeing no matter who sang the closing theme. WRT the idea of a grand ectofest next summer--gonna take a lot of work, but marvelous idea in principle.
