I found two blackgirls discs (procedure and Happy) in the very cheap bins at a Camelot record store in the Mall of America. I think they were each about $3. I would highly recommend them. They're a lot of fun and quite unique. Their lyrics are great, and so is the fiddle and piano playing. They remind me somewhat of a folkier, funnier Miranda Sex Garden, but funny doesn't describe them very well either--unless you think of funny as a kind of black-comedy funny. Anyway, they're great to listen to, (although with all my other recent purcahses I haven't really listened to them as closely as I should). Definitely worth picking up--especially if you can find them as cheap as I did! But what I'm certain of - there will be an Ecto-gathering in Norway next summer during the Quart Festival in my birthtown Kristiansand. OK, I was going to let this subject rest, but I came across this article today, the topic (especially title) of which was uncannily close to my recent 'alanis vs. alanis morisette' post, so I thought I'd transcribe it. For those of you utterly sick of this topic, feel free to skip this (except Ariel :)).... It's from 'Network' (not Nettwerk :)) magazine, which is distributed through Sam the Record Man stores in Canada... ALANIS FINDS A LAST NAME and some edge by Perry Stern The number of musicians who have successfully traversed the deep and dangerous chasms between one musical genre and another - Walter Ostinek's miraculous transformation from thrash metal maven to Grammy-winning polka king comes immediately to mind - can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand with enough left over to hold chopsticks. [:)] Ottawa's Alanis Morissette can now proudly, and accurately, claim to be one of the few. Already a Juno-award winning, platinum-record-selling, teenage-boy-heartbreaking purveyor of lightweight disco-smarm (remember hits like "Too Hot," and "Feel Your Love"?) in the early '90s, at 18 Morissette had the good sense to reassess her career, move from Ottawa to Toronto (and then ultimately, to Los Angeles) and engineer a stylistic about-face. Yes, that sometimes keening, sometimes rasping voice you've been hearing all summer that caustically upbraids former lovers (0n "You Oughta Know"), viciously dissects lecherous music execs ("Right Through You") and breathlessly confesses a world full of contradictory personality traits ("Hand In My Pocket") is the voice that is finally fulfilling the promise of the 1991 Juno for Most Promising Female Vocalist. It was just two years ago that Morissette vowed, "I would not longer put myself into a position where I was in a stifling environment and writing things that weren't necessarily 100 percent myself." After six months on her own in Toronto she packed her bags and moved to L.A. where no one knew or cared about her commercial success up north. There she teemed up with pop songwriter Glen Ballard (he co-wrote Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror") and there was no reason to think anything other than the same old schlock would come out of it. But instead of syrupy pop the two churned out some inspiringly acerbic rock. "The record (Jagged Little Pill) was written in an accelerated stream of consciousness pace," Morissette explained recently during a press tour. Unlike the music of her past which was laboured over and constantly reassessed by others, she said, "a lot of the [new] dongs were written in 15 or 45 minutes. Both the music and the lyrics. I was a spiritual occurrence. Writing so pure, so conscious, so free... Now that I've tapped into that way of writing I'll never go back." Fortunately, she won't have to. Well, there it is. Looks like Perry feels a kinda ambivalence-laced-with-cynicism about her, not unlike myself :) Anyway, enough about Alanis... I went to look for that Veda Hille album again today, and actually found it, but it was $21.99, which is more than I'm willing to spend on a CD (knowing it only costs $2 or less to manufacture them :)), so I ended up buying Ferron's "Not a Still Life" and Deep Forest's "Boheme" instead. I really like both, but should *not* have done that! I did manage to force myself to put back Ani DiFranco's "Puddle Dive" which I had also been carrying around the store, although I *really* wanted it- ahhh the will power! :) Especially since I'll still have to buy Veda's, though I've decided to hold out until her concert on the 4th...maybe I can bargain her down personally :) Gotta get some sleep! It took them a while to process the order, but after the exchange rate, it was something like $50 for 3 CDs and a video (Veda Hille, Kathleen Yearwood, Count Your Blessings, and Jane Siberry's Video Collection)--not too bad. Seems about average. Despite the $2 to make a disc thing (does that price include promotion, royalties, etc. or just manufacture?). Anyway, I do highly recommend A&B Sound.
