But then I was very surprised to >see so many people whose taste in music I respect praise her on this >list. Am I just biased because of her past?? Well, I don't know if its bias against her past or simply the way she sounds presently. She's someone I wouldn't expect most people to like... but I tend to have fairly diverse tastes. Intensity of emotion is something I tend to value highly, in relation to various other criteria. I have been known to enjoy Babes in Toyland and Free Kitten for those purposes, although many times I'm *just* not in the mood.... and some of their songs are somewhat opposite philosophically to me. However, rage is a valid emotion, should not be suppressed (or it may do even greater damage!) and is capable of motivating some people to do great things... so I can deal with listening to expressions of pure, unadulterated rage at times... I was kind of surprised by her popularity, but she does hit some of the alterna-pop criteria. > My initial reaction to the YOK is "grow up and get on with your >life." It strikes me as very 'childish' rather than mature or 'wise >beyond her years'. But then again... maybe I should give her another >chance, letting go of pre-conceived notions first. I guess I shouldn't judge her on >just the one song either, but am scared to buy the album because I >have a feeling I wouldn't like it (maybe I'm more of a Jewel-type, >though I've never heard anything of hers). I think that it is pretty daring to come out with such a song. It does have some "immature" emotions, and personally if someone "does me wrong" I'm more likely to ignore them than to seek revenge. In a way, though, creating a song such as YOK is a great way to get on with one's life, if it is something which is bothering someone a lot... you get it out of your system and move on.... It is kind of poetic justice too, to turn hurt and anger into a hit song! >Richard: >>>But, it really annoys me when Top-40-Alt-Tern-Nut-ive or Modern Rock >>station >>>DJs just try to dismiss her as "psycho music" and laugh her off... > > I was under the impression that she was still pretty much top >fourty material. Am I wrong? All the top fourty stations seem to be >playing her, and I haven't heard anyone dismiss her yet. I think yes, she is pretty popular. The djs, therefore, are forced to play her whether they like her or not (as is standard for these stations). She indeed is on the T40-alt, but it is interesting how uncomfortable she makes people feel... which isn't really expected, IMHO, since some of the popular alternative stuff is disturbing to me in a less appealing way. I mean, it seems to make people more upset to listen to an angry woman than to hear a guy talking about lust and murder in the same song... I never get the impression AM is going to killl the guy, she's just bringing some of his own karma back on him... >>>I have her CD, and some of it is pretty deep in a no-nonsense, >>straight-forward >>>sort of way. Amazing. She doesn't mince words, but there is some >>wisdom there >>>beyond her years. > > OK, here is me, the cynic: Is it deep in its simplicity, or >just simplistic? (I'm not sure myself, just trying to play devil's >advocate :)) Good question.... I've wondered that sometimes about her and other people as well. It wouldn't be the first time I've read more into a person's lyrics than were there, nor will it be the last :) I do tend to read a lot of meaning into music at times, sometimes when its not warranted. On the other hand, simple doesn't necessarily mean simplistic. I guess I haven't got it all figured out just yet... but I do find something appealing about it... sarcastic juxtaposition, and all...although admittedly I don't want to listen to it every day. Sometime I'll try to record my impressions and feelings about the songs, 'cuz thats sometimes interesting to do... I'm currently doing that with Kateil Keineg's O Seasons O Castles... and plan to spam the list with the results. =8^) > Does anyone remember her early days? Did anyone like her then? >Does anyone think she's 'improved' since then? > > I'm not trying to offend any of her fans, am just throwing out >some ideas, as I don't even feel qualified to comment on wether or not >I like her music. It just surprised me to see her rise so quickly from >relative obscurity to such critical acclaim in such a short period of >time, and am interested in why and how this happened. I supsect she's had some good marketing... I would never present myself as a "sophisticated critic of music"... and don't follow the business and personalities... I just pick up tidbits about people / groups that appeal to me. I haven't really heard of her 'till the radio stations started playing her... It was surprising to me to find her on a station that was in general, pretty mediocre. I think that she was popular because, I mean, what teenager or young adult hasn't been beside themselves when a love affair turns sour. But women are supposed to just go cry in their corner, and not let anyone hear, or sing a song about how they'll wait forever for the jerk to change his mind and never have another love. Getting it out of your system and making a hit record to boot provides a better role model, IMHO (wow, a role model? well, really, look at the alternatives!). >Ariane. > >PS.: I saw literally the last 5-10 SECONDS of a Heather Nova video on >MusiquePlus the other day. I have NEVER seen the video for her... guess I'll have to wait until I can buy it, 'cuz I can't stand to wade through all the bs on television in the hopes something decent might show up.... On the other hand, sometimes the videos ruin the song for me... I just can't stand it when an artist lets the video producer turn it into just a standard "pout into the camera and look sexy" video.... or when its just a bunch of nervous, random splices. oh well. - -Richard. ------------------------------ From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Date: Mon, 18 Sep 95 13:59:37 EDT Subject: Re: Alanis: two versions of cd > >When I stick my cd in, it shows 12 tracks, and the 12th has a "hidden" >bonus track at the end... > >My coworker's cd shows 13 tracks, and the 13th is a "repeat" of "You >Oughta Know", which seems pretty similar to the other track (same >length), but seems to have (at least) an additional percussive >sound(s) at the ending of the song, instead of just fading.... >followed by a similar, shorter version of the "hidden" track >"sub-hidden" after some silence.... in other words, the bonus track >has a bonus track! I once heard it described as a monumental advancement in the art of songwriting and esp. in dealing with religious issues in song... I just think it works on so many levels. Of course, you really need to hear it, but hey, here are the lyrics: Sister Clarissa -- MICHAEL SMITH Sister Clarissa could have been on the stage But Jesus came over and told her he'd rather she taught the fifth grade Sister Clarissa is engaged to our Lord He has promised to take her to heaven, he never goes back on his word Sister Clarissa is 11 feet tall, her rosary hangs And it clatters and it clangs when she moves down the hall She writes Sister Clarissa up high on the board The chalk won't dare squeak while the children sit meekly, without a word Somehow you know summer's over Chorus: Who made me? God made me, to know him, to love him, to serve him in this world And to be happy with him, forever. Sister Clarissa believes in free will The communion of saints the forgiveness of sins and a quiet fire drill And when she hugs you she hugs you too tight She gives you a star on your forehead for spelling Connecticut right Chorus Many years later on a memory walk Through the old wooden doors, the same corridors dusted with years of chalk You see Sister Clarissa and she looks just the same And the sound of her rosary still brings a chill and she remembers your name And the years disappear as though they'd never been And you hear yourself saying, "Yes, Sister" "No, Sister" like you were 10. And you're so glad to see that she's still the same way And to tell her you love her before she goes over to her fiance Chorus (repeat last line) Oh, and here is his agents info (ask her how to get albums, lyrics, etc., she's very friendly): |Joann Murdock |Artists of Note/Depot Recordings |P.O. (Elionwyr@onix.com) - - On the question of emotional music and music VS lyrics: I tend to think like a singer. (I've come to beleive very strongly that, say, a guitarist hears music very differently than a singer does..the emphasis on what's important in the song is different.) This, plus being a poet, makes the lyrics more important to me. Sometimes a tune will catch my attention, but when I sit down and look at the lyrics, they're just not intense or interesting enough for me to be really wild about the song. At the same time, I will be more inclined to listen to a song more often and more intensely if it's written or performed in a key that I can comfortaby sing along with. Of late, Sarah MLachlan does it best for me - I can relate to her songs far better than I would like sometimes ;) and my voice can fit in usually very easily with either the harmony line or the lead. Happy is another one (obviously!) :) . Re: Tiffany VS Alanis Well..actually, Tiffany's last album *did* have some much better music on than what made it to the air from her *first* record. I won't say she's on the same level as Alanis - I tend to think such comparisons aren't fair to begin with.
