I thought I'd mention my purchases for this weekend, because except for Heather Nova, I haven't seen the other two mentioned yet. Well, after a long stint of non-CD purchasing, I broke down and picked up 3 this weekend. I've already mentioned Heather Nova, which I bought purely on the mentioned here. I've only listened to it once, and that was while working around the house. My first instant impression was, "Hmmm, kind of bland." But by the end of the disc, I found I enjoyed it. My surprise find was a new CD by Australian band Hunters & Collectors! Wow! I thought they were kaput for sure. For those who don't know, H&C are a muscular (that's the best word I can think of) pop/rock band with a political bent. They're best known here in the States for the songs, "Back on the breadline," & "Throw your arms around me," (oft covered by Crowded house). The lead vocalist, Mark Seymour, is brother to Crowded house bassist Nick Seymour. I really liked H&C through the mid-80's when they achieved at least minor success, and then they disappeared and I heard nothing else. I was thrilled to see new product from them. I only listened to it once, but it sounds great. Finally, we have Pretty & twisted, the new outfit featuring ex-Concrete Blonde force, Johnette Napolitano. Well, I've always liked Concrete Blonde, although the last album not as much as previous, and I was hesitant to buy Pretty & twisted. I read a review of it that intrigued me though, and I picked it up. Wow! This album is really great! IT is very melodic with less shouting. It really showcases Johnette's excellent voice, but loses none of the intensity or power of Concrete blonde's material. There you have it. Had Holly Cole in my hands as well, but it wasn't on sale and I decided to wait. (I've got to at least pretend I'm on a budget!) Has some good reviews and interviews. I accessed it thru http://www.yahoo.com. Just go to the music link and pick her out alphabetically. As for comparisons to who she sounds like, the review I read for "Oyster" made a reference to the exotic feel of Enya and the power of Sinead O'Connor. Hmmmm. Quite a few different impressions seem to be gleaned from her style. I guess that's what has me intriqued. I'll post my thoughts when I get the CD this week and give it a listen.
