"can anyone tell me the skinny on a new woman's singer compilation that is due out in oct (24th?). it is titled "nothing but a she thing" ". Well I've gotten my information through Patti Smith who will have a song on the album called "Don't Smoke in Bed" which is a Nina Simone cover. The album is put out by the Good Karma Productions who did all the Red, Hot + albums. This compilation is for the Shirley Divers Foundation. Shirley was very active in the music business and passed away from breast cancer. All the money from the album will go towards cancer research basically for women's needs. Patti's not one for genderizing projects but she said the cause was good. She mentioned Annie Lennox, Sinead and Vannessa Williams as some of the other contributors. Sounds like an excellent project and the cause is a good one. I'm looking forward to it. I'll post the results of my (future) listening sessions.... So I await a shipment, but due to the generosity of coworkers, I have a lot to listen to lately (we do an ongoing CD exchange at work), and I currently have in my posession (for the moment) Jennifer Trynin's _Cockamamie_, Cranberries _No Need To Argue_, Craig Chaquico's _Acoustic Highway_, Jimmy Hendrix _Live At Winterland_ and Clannad _Anam_ (well, they're not ALL ecto :)... On first listen, Jennifer Tryinin's CD is better than I would have thought on hearing the overplayed "better than nothing" cut... I had sort of put it in the mental category of "nice, but way down on the list of things to buy" from my radio impressions... but now I appreciate the uniqueness and irony of her lyrics and the music is cool too. Standard rock stuff musically, which explains why my friend likes Jennifer (He also likes Belly very much (after I introduced him to them), and I played him Throwing Muses (University), which he also liked. He owns the Breeders CD (which I don't)... but he didn't care too much for Danielle Dax, Luscious Jackson, Renaissance ("too loud, too disco, too soft") - though he likes Sarah M and Loreena M. All in all, very nice, but not a must have for me (knowing full well that the ONLY way to make a buy decision is to listen, or do it on a whim - I seem to always follow the latter strategy). Some of the song topics include bad relationships, bad neighorhoods, etc. Sample: "But don't make me BEG I'm gathering bones along the shore as you climb and claw against me choking down some small debris I'm making waves in holding tight to what it was my hands are cold and empty lay my limbs along this beach do what you want to do to my in my sleep". In general, quirky-ironic-angry lyrics, solid music, somewhat mainstream musically. Just got Dalbello's _Whoman Foursays_ in the mail from Neile (Thanks!) - - and its every bit as essential as I thought it would be! As an instant fan, I'm curious as to anything else anyone knows about Dalbello. Rock-ish, but more experimental musically than Jennifer Trynin / Belly / etc. Has a very nice edge - reminds me of people like Patty Smith, PJ Harvey, but with a touch enough of pop/rock to be reminiscent of the likes of, well, Pat Benatar (but not standard pop/rock). Ultimately cool and primitive with an urban twist, resonating with Sheela-na-gig energy... I was just thinking, especially since our server is down. Out of all the purchase I have made this year (granted, not as many as woj...) there is only one that I'm not 100% thrilled with. The disappear fear self-titled release is my least favorite. You realize, that's a great track record. Let's see: somewhere around 10-12 new purchases this year, and only one that I'm not "head over heals" about. Sure, df is lisentable, but - too me - it isn't as striking as _the mask and mirror_, or _relish_, or any of the suddenly, tammy! CD's. If the year continues on this pace, it will definitely be my "best year in music". Hmm, what's the next possibilities: Boiled in Lead, Anonymous 4, Shawn Colvin, Victoria Williams, etc. (this list is just a portion of what's available at one of the used CD places). So, as one can see, the year should continue with wonderful music. Heck, I might just have to pay full price :-o for a Matthew Sweet or Nields CD (if I can find the Nields around here...). I had a nice, well structured list of artists to try, and what order to try them in, and a few comments about this Heather Nova person throws me completely out of balance. I bought the CD today, even though I hadn't had any intention of buying it before. I'm listening to "Oyster" right now, and I must say, I'm taken by this new artist, but hard. I've heard a lot of discussion about whether Heather sounds like Tori Amos or Touch era Sarah McLachlan. Well, I say she sounds like both and neither. Her voice answers the oft-asked question (well, I ask it a lot anyway), "What would Tori Amos sound like if she got some vocal training and smoothed out her sound ala Sarah M?" She seems to do a lot of Toriesque stuff, but she does it like Sarah McLachlan with Tori's voice. Strange. It's like deja vous, except not. The music reminds me of Little Earthquakes, but lushed up. Very pretty stuff. I'm captivated by "Walk this World" through "Island." "THrowing Fire At the Sun" and "Maybe an Angel" are lovely tunes, but don't catch me the same way.
