Despite the fact that she had to be really patient with us (for a while she was outside the store holding our coffee--don't worry, I rewarded her with a Jann Arden disc), we found a few interesting things in addition to a Veda Hille disc for Neal and a McGarrigles disc for Doug who was back in Seattle making sure our cats were fed & watered. Anyway, the big discovery is a disc called _Shell_ by Sandra Lockwood. I saw it sitting in the new releases and thought it might be interesting, but there was a used copy that the store (Lyle's) would let me listen to. I tested the first song--ok, the second--well, and heard just a taste of the third and immediately decided to buy it. I wish I had bought a new copy to support her better, now that I've heard more of it and heard it several times. She falls easily in what every reviewer will call Kate-like music. She plays piano. She has a high, slightly raspy voice. But the music is a little more odd rhymically, in an almost jazzy way, and she actually reminds me more of Emily Bezar, though maybe a little more lyrical generally than Emily Bezar. She's a varied and good songwriter and has a wonderful sense a catchy piano bits and choruses and can do the lazy & beautiful thing, too. For the brave among you or those who simply trust me, it seems A&B Sound carries the disc (1-800-663-0596) or there's an address: MIKASONG, Box 8626, Victoria, B.C., CANADA V8W 3S2; fax 604-478-7949. It's spending a lot of time in my player, despite some other wonderful things: Kerri Simpson & Veve arrived from the Australian web page Anthony Horan mentioned (very good, strong stuff), the new Boo Trundle (does anyone else know her? She's a great alternashouter), and Julia P. Hersheimer from Holland (very good alternative pop). - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: jeffy@wam.umd.edu Date: Mon, 07 Aug 95 13:45:06 -0400 Subject: Sarah, Holly Cole, ambient Happy First off, I was *very* depressed to learn this morning that last night Sarah McLachlan had been featured on WHFS' "Just Passing Through" show. I didn't hear a single ad for it last week. This morn they played "Good Enough" from the session she recorded for the station, just her at the piano, quite lovely (and no, they did *not* edit out the "bullshit"). Miraculously, I was actually near a tape deck _and_ had a blank tape, so was able to get this one song, BUT I WANT THE REST! Anybody out there happen to record this? - --- Over at some friends' yesterday, we were chatting with the stereo on in the background, and I asked, "Is this the Holly Cole Trio?" One of my hosts explained that he had no idea, as this was some sampler they'd picked up at Starbucks of all places. Rod ran off to grab the jewel case and came back asing, "Did you say you thought this was Holly Cole? You were right." The sampler is the "Gazebo Blend" disc, or something like that, and is a nice jazz sampler. The aforementioned hosts rather liked Holly and expressed interest in getting some of her stuff. Wheee. - --- Is it just me? Every time I hear the second track of _Ambient 1_ (one of Happy's tunes, the one with the german title which I can't remember), I'm put _strongly_ in mind of a piece from Peter Gabriel's _Passion_. It's been driving me crazy. (especially since I was listening to _Ambient 1_ over and over while working on a massive kite project last week). Does nobody out there have _Ambient 1_? My friend (an LSD fan) says to this guy, "You've got to be kidding!" Indeed it was no jest. I called the Projekt info line to confirm and discovered the following East Coast dates for Love Spirals Downward: - - August 31st at Titi the Bear, Boston. (Is "Titi the Bear" right? That's my best guess as to what the voice on the Projekt line said.) - - September 1st at the Asylum, Philadelphia (My friend told me that lovesliescrushing is also on that bill. Show starts at midnight and tix are $12 at Ticketma$ter). - - September 2nd at the Bat Cave in New York City. *I* am headed for the NYC date, though I don't have any details on it as yet. I did not buy much on this trip, but between Vancouver and Berkeley (never did get to go CD shopping anywhere else, alas) here is what I came up with: Nan Vernon - Manta Ray -- has she been in any other bands? dreamy, well-orchestrated, good intensity Ruby Blue - Down From Above -- is this Rebecca Pigeon's old band? Nowhere are the band members stated as such. More than a bit celtic sounding but quite zippy. IM - Glow -- excellent as usual Kendra Smith - 5 Ways of Disappearing -- dark, brooding -- slightly karklinesque but more cynical (?) Holly Cole - Temptation -- very mellow even for Cole Mae Moore - Dragonfly -- every bit as good as bohemia on first listen Moxy Fruvous - Wood -- less a cappella style, more mainstream -- sounds like they're trying to breakthrough, but I suspect it won't happen with this album because even it is still too obscure -- on first listen: a disappointment; on second listen -- brilliant, but even more subtle and understated than Bargainville; and a whole lot darker and gloomier (is this a new trend -- is the world really this bad? I think not... :-) HTR - BTC -- finally found it Hope to see some chicagophiles at Susan Werner, (Schubas, Aug.17) now that her ecto-approval rating has edged up. Yesterday I zipped back to the house of Musical Traditions to by a wedding present for some friends. Since they did register anywhere, I bought them a full beginners Bodhran set. Anyway, while nosing around, I found they had CD's Comet, which I picked up (with Muzsikas disc "maramaro - The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania for me and a guide to playing penny whistle for my sister). I then headed over to my sister's place in Rockville to surprise her with my finds. The second track caused her to leap up proclaiming that was the song she had heard, which turned out to be Katie Cruel. So my sister sends her thanks along too (particularly since not only did she find out who sang the song she liked, but she got a free disc and book to boot!). BTW, I liked Cordelia's Dad a lot myself, though I'm having serious problems not calling them Cordelia's Dog now. I found it very reminiscent of the Oyster Band (and, sadly, I still haven't actually heard any Boiled in Lead, though it definitely sounds like I should. Neal ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Mon, 7 Aug 1995 22:42:31 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Miriam Makeba I can't really do justice to the incredible life and work of Miriam Makeba, but as a starting point, I'll toss out what I can. Anyone correct me if I go astray (like I need to ask for that!). The only disc I have is 1988's Sangoma, which is stupendous. Not only is it a great sounding disc, but it's a wonderful package as well. There are 19 traditional South African recordings, all sung in Xhosa. The book contains the full Xhosa lyrics to all the songs, as well as translations and stories about where they came from. The music itself is generally pretty sparse, sometimes just Miriam, and other times fleshed out with percussion, keyboards, and backing (and call and response) vocals. I highly recommend this album if you have any interest in that type of music. She's been making recordings for ages now (at least 30 years!), and Sangoma was sort of a comeback album from her, as she hadn't been around for a number of years. Like many South Africans, her resurgance is largely due to Paul Simon's Graceland album. When I saw the Graceland tour, Paul Simon stepped aside and allowed Miriam and Hugh Masakela to play a few songs of their own, which were great. It was doubly impressive, since Miriam had just broken her ankle, and actually performed from a wheelchair. I played Sangoma for my parents, and they agreed it sounded just like the recordings she made in the 60's, when she (and African traditional music) were making a surge of popularity. I'd guess you'd do well to buy any of her albums, but I only have experience with the one. As for her life, she became a South African exile over 30 years ago. The booklet in Sangoma is written before the open elections, and I recall seeing that she had been back since then. I can't recall who her first husband was (I want to say traditional/jazz trumpeter Hugh Masakela, but I'm not certain), but her career got side-tracked, perhaps even blacklisted, when she married a Black Panther (Stokely Carmichael?). My CD advertises an "autobiography": Makeba: My Story by Miriam and James Hall. Ordering info is included, but may be out of date by now. neal ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Mon, 7 Aug 1995 22:52:52 -0400 (EDT) Subject: df, OtR, Whew, I think the nealbot is working overtime here. Keep your eyes open out there, as they tend to play out quite a bit and put on a fun show. I got an Over the Rhine newsletter in the mail today. Looks like Till We Have Faces, there independent 1991 release, is going to be re-released on IRS records on August 15. It'll come with a few new live tracks, some extra stuff in the book, and some tidbits layered on top of some of the original songs. I love the original release, which is an even lusher looking package than the beautiful "patience". I haven't listened to the two later recordings much, but this one is a great, catchy collection of whispy, folky, pop songs. There were a bunch that lodged firmly in my head as soon as I got the disc. They will be playing at the Cincinnati Zoo Pavilion on Wed, Aug 16. (Ticket includes zoo admission!) Then they are off to England and Holland. Sorry, I don't have any tour info. They do have a web page though. You can find it by wandering down the links from Yahoo.
