I was expecting a similar reaction by the audience when I saw Jewel/Peter two weeks ago. But everyone was surprisingly receptive and polite, despite the fact that it probably was not what they were in the mood for. Jewel ended up performing for about 45 minutes. > She did pretty much all of her silly songs ("Race Car Driver", the sneezing > song, "My Very Own Private God's Gift To Women", complete with a medley of > 70's and 80's hit love songs in the middle and a Tracy Chapman impression > that sounded *exactly* like her), started off with a quadruple-time version > of "Pieces of You" (she's still doing the Cranberries thing, and sorry, but I > think it's a scream), and ended with the yodeling song. No "Who Will Save > Your Souls", but I don't think the crowd would have stood for any more from > her, unfortunately. :( We got "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "Daddy," which I really appreciated, considering those are the only 2 songs I can stand on the album. _Pieces of You_ does nothing for me. But everyone has been saying she's much better live, so I reserved judgment until I saw her perform. I'm still not a rabid fan, but Jewel was funny and relaxed live, which was quite endearing. Plus, I really liked the yodeling. :-) > We stuck around for 15 minutes of Peter Murphy's set, then left when we > concluded that the 4 songs we had just heard sounded exactly alike, and we > didn't like any of them. His new album, _Cascade_ is his best effort in years. However, I will admit the songs lost a lot of their subtlety live, which may account for negative reactions. And, the audience is just plain silly. > I'd like to find out whose brilliant idea it was to have Jewel on this tour, > and throttle them. Argh. Agreed. I enjoyed them both, but they should never be on the same tour. And, speaking of concerts, I saw Bjork this past week. The opening act was Aphex Twin. I was mildly intrigued to see what an artist like Aphex Twin, who is so reliant on studio trickery, would do live. Well, it was interesting, but not at all enjoyable. He simply sat at the front of the stage with two turntables, mixing at times entertaining but mostly annoying soundscapes. It gave cacophony new meaning. Bjork was supposedly sick (at least that's what she told a local radio station when she didn't show up for her scheduled interview). But she seemed happy and energetic to me. She opened with "Headphones" and "Army of Me" and ended up performing almost all of _Debut_ and _Post_. She even sang "It's Oh So Quiet," which I was hoping she would perform, but never thought she would. The crowd went crazy, so I guess I'm not the only one who loves that song. She also peformed one new song. I remember nothing about it other than she did the cutest dance I have ever seen to accompany it. If nothing else, I'm glad to see Russell Crowe crossing over to American films. Actually, is that a good or bad thing? Anyway, I immediately noticed a new Peter Gabriel song in it. It repeated over the credits, and was listed as being written by Peter Gabriel, George Acogny, and Tori Amos (!). So, even though I have put myself on a strict CD budget for this month, I bought the soundtrack today. The song is performed by Peter Gabriel and The Worldbeaters. It sounds like a Peter Gabriel song, and I really don't hear any Tori influence. Even the piano at the beginning sounds Peteresque. So, does anyone know what Tori's involvement in this song was? I now delete really-deep-thoughts on sight, so if it has been discussed there, I missed it. Those who can tune in should pay attention this coming Tuesday -- they've got one of her contributions to the AG ambient album on the playlist! I did a search of their playlists, and discovered that the Happy living room concert was aired on May 16th (program G20). Nice of them to tell us, eh? :P Apparently she performed "Hold Me", "Save Our Souls", "Summer", and a couple others. I sent the Echoes folks a note asking if they plan to rebroadcast that any time soon (they have been known to do so in the past, particularly in the case of Heidi Berry last year), requesting that they please let me know if and when this happens. For good measure, I also signed on to their mailing list so I can get announcements and playlists and stuff. (Proofreading here-- it should be apparent that in the first paragraph I was talking about Happy, right? It's late and I can't edit on-line. :}) Anyway-- Bob, did you ever get the recording of this you were promised way back when? That would be Vin Scelsa, AAA DJ extraordinaire. There are some, I think, who would argue that he accidentally created the genre. Interestingly enough, he started out at WFMU, the bastion of free-form radio anarchy in East Orange, NJ that receives quite a bit of support from him even now. David Dye (of World Cafe) fame seems to be his heir apparent -- Dye just took over hosting the "In Their Own Words" series at the Bottom Line, which Scelsa created a long time ago. Now Scelsa has started a sampler-by-mail thing with Time Warner Music that is doomed to failure before it even starts, due to the fact that you have a 10- day, no-risk free trial for _everything_ you order from them. They're not going to make a dime: everybody's just going to take the sampler, listen to it, tape whatever they want to keep and send it back before the trial period is up. (They're not marketing it in the most intelligent manner either, but that's another story.) It's a shame, too, because it's not a bad idea: send out samplers in the vein of CMJ Music Monthly, focusing on "AAA" artists to help get them some exposure. Unfortunately, the only way to get on the sampler if you're a "AAA" artist is to pay them a whole lot of money, which leaves Happy right out of the whole racket... >anyway I wonder if he was any influence in the format change or if >this comes from powers greater.. weird stuff, when a huge station like >that that's been around so long changes so drastically. >I guess they lost the battle with K-Rock. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, when the membership of this list numbered far fewer than it does now, Jessica and Greg made up a batch of ecto shirts, the better to recognize other ectophiles at shows by. Over the course of the past three and a half years my shirt has seen a lot of loving wear, and correspondingly a lot of trips through the washing machine. The screen is starting to show its age, and the shirt itself has seen better days in general. I'm sure the rest of us with these shirts can say the same. So the question presents itself: Where's the screen now? I assume the shop that ran off the original batch still has it, right? Jess, Greg, where did you have the shirts made up? A second run using a pre-existing screen is much cheaper to do than a first run, so getting more made up would, I presume, not be a huge problem. The second question is, who would buy one if we were to make up a second batch? I know I would definitely get one to replace my aging model, and there are lots more people around here now who I'm sure would want one too. I don't want to clog up the list with "yes" or "no" posts, so please just send me a note within the next couple of days if you'd be interested in getting an ecto shirt for your very own. If interest seems to warrant it, I'll look into getting another batch done -- if we can't go to the original place, there's a place right here in Boonton who has done a great job for woj and I in the shirt department in the past, and their prices are pretty much standard for the industry. The more shirts we make, the cheaper they'll be. What does the official ecto shirt look like, you ask? It's blue (of course :), with the _Ecto_ album cover on the front (in the original batch the image came out brown, but it was supposed to be black) and "Happy Rhodes" underneath, and on the back the words, "I'll be here/I'll be ecto". It's a way cool shirt, and if I may say so, at the first Philly show where AG was selling their Happy shirts, several people came up to us wanting to know where we got ours because they liked them better. :} So if you think you want one, let me know. And if anyone (that means you, Jess and/or Greg) can tell me where the screen resides now, that would help immensely. One year in high school I borrowed my dad's copy to read, and "demanded" my own. I've probably read it 6 times since then. Even though the movie wasn't true to the book (what movie is?), I enjoy it anyway. Sting is just too awesome. Be wary, though: for me, the other books just aren't as good. _Dune Messiah_ being especially dull. Luckily, it's the "thinnest" of the lot. I've made it through _Children of Dune_, as well as _God Emporer of Dune_, and also thought they weren't as crafted as well as _Dune_ (although they were better than _Dune Messiah_). Now to make it through _Heretics of Dune_, and _Chapterhouse: Dune_. I have been lucky with the Dune series. Since my father found that I liked them (and him enjoying them as well), he's provided me with all Dune books as gifts. He even bought me _Dune Encyclopedia_ (unfortunately out of print), and _Eye_, which includes some thinking (and a short story, I think) about the world of Dune. Sorry to rant about Dune. Maybe we can have a Dune reading party, while listening to PDQ Bach?!? Egads, what was I thinking... - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Matthew Bittner WW1 Modeler, ecto subscriber, new dad meba@cso.com Omaha, Nebraska "Not in the face, NOT IN THE FACE" - Arthur, The Tick's sidekick, and his battle cry - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ------------------------------ From: sagetodd@postoffice.ptd.net (Sage Lunsford & Todd O'Reilly) Date: Mon, 7 Aug 1995 10:20:00 -0400 Subject: Re: The Story Thomas, The following info is from the "Dog Dreams" newsletter, which is maintained by rager@cs.umd.edu (sorry, I don't know his name, he doesn't mention it in the newsletter) and is: ______________________________ What is Dog Dreams? After the first book came out, combing what was first serialised as two different books ("Dune Planet" and "The Prophet of Dune", if memory serves) he declared that the book was planned as containing those sections, and was now complete. Then, after Dune Messiah was plbulished, he claimed that the original plan went through that book, and was now complete. Then after Children of Dune was published... and so on... and so on... At the last interview, the guy spliced together all these statements from previous interviews and played them for Herbert, who kinda hmmed and fumfuhed.
