Happy's CD-4: The price of this is *well* covered by the acoustic version of "Look for the Child." Absolutely sublime. The radio edit of "Glory" is about what you'd expect. The acoustic version of "Collective Heart" is rather nice, and I might end up preferring it to the album version. And there's no need to mention the album version of "Hold Me." (though I just did) Ambient Vol. 1: If you like ambient music or you're a completist, then check this out. As Bob has said, there's some rather teeth-jarring bass, lost of great rhythms and synth and guitar noodling. Quiet but loud, engaging but willing to drop into the background. Happy's songs on here are wonderful. And now a question: what's the scoop with the non-hidden hidden bonus track? In the liner notes, there's a short line about "Track 42 is titled Three Spinsa de Wheel and is by David Torn" (or something like that). Of course, this song is listed in the actual track listing (which shows 11 songs). The two CD players I've tried this disc in have insisted that there are only 11 tracks and refuse to play the elusive 2nd David Torn song. So: a) *is* there really an extra track on there? b) has anybody gotten it to play on their disc? c) did I get a "bad" disc, or perhaps was the mastering screwed up? Jeff |Jeffrey C. AAA, for anyone unfamiliar with the format, is Adult Album Alternative, often also called Progressive. It's a mix of the lighter side of alternative, and usually includes lots of 'ecto' type music. The format tends to usually only exist in large markets, as it appeals to such a small slice of the radio audience it needs a large population base to be successful. Done well, it's a great format. Anyway, I've been reading on rec.radio.broadcasting over the past week that WNEW had flipped to straight alternative, not AAA, but those reports might have been premature. - ----- I just received a press release from Toronto artist Katherine Wheatley, who has just completed her first full-length CD. It's produced by John Switzer, who has worked with Jane Siberry and The Waltons, among others. Each track features one or two guest artists, including Stephen Fearing (guitar & vocs), Don Ross (dobro), Willie P. Bennett (harmonica, mandolin), Andy Creeggan (accordian), Oliver Schroer (fiddle) Ian Mackie (udu), Peter Kieswalter (organ), and Toronto's well-known, ecto-friendly David Ramsden and Barbara Lynch on vocs. I saw one of Katherine's shows about a year ago, and thought she was pretty good. Her 4-song demo tape is very light, mostly just her with an acoustic guitar, quiet and rootsy. The songwriting and performance isn't outstanding on that one, but it's pleasant. I haven't heard the new album yet, it's due out commercially in the fall on an indie label. Meanwhile, it's available by mail-order...if you're interested, e-mail me and I'll send you the details. ttyl, Dan - ------------------------------- DAN STARK dstark@freenet.niagara.com St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada ------------------------------ From: "Joseph Zitt" Date: Wed, 2 Aug 1995 01:45:43 +0000 Subject: Re: ramblings and such On 2 Aug 95 at 0:14, pink wrote: > and i have to say it, but i am getting bored with the music that > i am listening to. i listen to ecto stuff all day long at the bookstore > and now i need something. i have already run the gamut of > tori, sarah, happy, kate, jane, julia (fordham),everything but the girl, jill > sobule, loreena, the innocence mission,10K maniacs/natalie,cocteau > twins, suddenly tammy, lisa germano, mazzy star, the sundays, heidi berry, > the story, kristin hersh, and i have even resorted to listening to milla > and jewel (who i don't really like that much). This is just about the only thing I know how to cook: Heat up a wok (I use a terribly inauthentic but convenient Teflon one) with sesame oil in it. Crush in some crushed red peppers (yes, recrush them). Thaw out some chicken tenders (or breast of chicken, or other skinless, boneless stuff). Dip/dredge them in Hoisin sause or barbecue sauce. Stir fry them. Remove them from the wok. Chop up some fresh tomatoes. Stirfry them in the goop remaining in the wok. Optionally, do the same with other chopped up vegetables (frozen ones are OK). Serve it over bean-thread, angel hair pasta, vermicelli, potatoes, or yams. I always make *way* more than I need and freeze serving-sized freezer bags of it for later meals. There. I think that perhaps people were hoping for something more Letterman-ish, but I respect Conan greatly for coming up with new material and not stealing all of dave's routines (which is more than I can say for some other late-night acts). Conan O'Brian is a very talented guy, even if some of his talk show gags fall flat. His Lampoon stuff is hilarious, and he's written some of the best episodes of "The Simpsons," too. As for Late Nite, there is some really funny stuff on there, even if it is rather odd and untraditional. He spoofs his competition a lot; one night he started doing a "Viewer Mail" segment, except that he would send letters to his viewers, and they would write the (rather rude) replies. Plus, he books musical acts that noone else would, and that's worth more than just a passing mention in my book. In more ectophillic news, I picked up an old one by Kate (Sensual World) and a new one from Ani Difranco (Not a Pretty Girl). Maybe I'll write more about the latter after I've listened to it a few times... so far it sounds great! I believe that SFBC did a compilation edition of the first three or four. I last bought a complete run of them about two years ago; at that time, they were still in print. The tone of the books changes wildly the further you get; the first time I read them I barely got past the Riverboat one. The last time, however, I absolutely loved them all.
