Hi everyone! Apologies if all this has already been covered - I've not been keeping properly up to date with the list... I was just told about the new Holly Cole Trio album "Temptation" and went in search of the web site mentioned in these pages a while back. Having found that, I then discovered that there's an official page with the delightfully easy-to-remember address http://www.hollycole.com :) Unfortunately (and unnecessarily - I'm about to write to them regarding this) the page is impossible to navigate without a graphical browser, as it makes extensive use of image-maps that have no text-only alternative!! It says that "Temptation" was released on the 27th of June in Canada, and gets a world-wide release on August 15 (the same date as Jane Siberry's "Maria" if I'm not mistaken! A day to look forward to, to be sure!) The album consists entirely of Tom Waites covers -- ``Tracks Include: Take Me Home Train Song Jersey Girl Temptation Falling Down Invitation to The Blues Cinny's Waltz Frank's Theme Little Boy Blue I Don't Wanna Grow Up Tango Til They're Sore (Looking For)The Heart of Saturday Night Soldiers Things I Want You Good Old World The Briar and The Rose'' ``Those who associate Tom Waits with roughhewn musical textures and guttural, slurred vocal inflections will find in "Temptation" an entirely different approach and startlingly different results. Cole says, "Tom Waits is very male, and I don't mean that critically. It was interesting for me to look at it from a woman's perspective. That immediately changed everything...having these very male songs come out of a woman's mouth."'' There's also a 634k AIFF format sound-clip of "Jersey Girl" Well, I have to rush... It wasn't promoted at all - save for a couple of interviews in the street press (one of them mine) and a fluffy piece in a magazien for middle-aged women. EMI were concerned that Margot didn't have a band ready to tour with, and for some reason this seemed to cause them to lose interest. Hundreds of posters were printed up and never used, ditto for store displays. So an album that cost near a quarter of a million dollars to make was never introduced to the public via press or TV ads, or any of the usual media bombardment. It's almost as if, having heard the album, EMI's promotional people panicked and went to the pub for a few months. :) >This song is actually about how you sometimes have to "fall down" in your >quest for spiritual growth, or else people around you would appear to you >as dummies, and you'd just be a "lonely god" in a universe where you've >created everything yourself.
