Since I'm going to be totally revamping our Internet connection this weekend (not, like, Saturday or Sunday. So here's a premature but genuine Happy Birthday to: BunkyTom (BunkyTom@aol.com) on July 2, and Anders Hallberg (Anders.Hallberg@eua.ericsson.se) on the third. Happy Birthday, guys! It's like hearing someone talk about their visit to a mutual old friend. Is Rickie Lee considered "ecto?" If so, she is the musician who first turned me on to ecto music. Or perhaps she is just the first female artist whose voice I couldn't get enough of. Her husky, jazzy sound and a strong cup of coffee reminds me of late nights putting out the school paper in college (Ohio State....many, many moons ago). Wish I was at home instead of work so I could look up my CD/record collection to see what all I have of hers. I can't even remember the name of the last CD, but it was great (sheesh...I'm hopeless). Time to strart draggin out some dust-covered CDs. When I first heard PJ Harvey I thought it was Rickie Lee for a minute. Good stuff, all. (The other stuff you mentioned I'm not terribly familiar with. Tho I've heard some good things about Paul Park.) I'm missing one of the Borderland anthologies, so I'll be pretty dang jealous (but happy) if any of you snag it at a bookstore. :) The anthologies may very well turn you onto even more good writers. And, it's worth noting, if you enjoy the Liavek book, Will and Emma still have the last two in the Liavek anthologies available direct from them. (There are five total.) > i'll let you know. :) I am very much looking forward to Emma and Terry's > work, having heard praise of them here. could someone email me a list of > books written or edited by either of them? i think it was posted before, > but i failed to keep it. Those with web access can check out complete listings of Will Shetterly and Emma Bull's publications on the Flash Girls web site. http://www.player.org/pub/flash/flash.html (the SteelDragon catalog is also there, which includes some of their books). Emma's novels to date are: _War for the Oaks_ - urban fantasy set in Minneapolis. From Ace books. Out of print at the moment. The movie trailer is available from SteelDragon for $10.00. And yes, they still want to make a movie of it. _Falcon_ - Science Fiction with interesting twists. It's been awhile since I've read it. It might be Emma's weakest effort, but is still darn good. Reminded me a bit of Lois McMaster Bujold's work. _Bone Dance_ - The lines between SF and Fantasy are blurred in this one. It was nominated for some big awards in the field. Again, it's been awhile... There's a very cool tarot deck in this one. Good. _Finder_ - the latest book, out in paperback fairly recently. Still see it prominently displayed at chain bookstores. Very good. It is set in the Borderlands universe... Tho one needn't have read the other borderlands books to enjoy it. (Other Borderlands books? Bordertown, Borderlands - both edited by Mark Alan Arnold and Terri Windling; Life on the Border, edited by Terri Windling; Will Shetterly's novels _Elsewhere_ and _Nevernever_, Emma's _Finder_. There is one forthcoming from Jane Yolen.) Terri Windling is best known (and has won the most awards) for editing the anthology _The Years Best Fantasy and Horror_ with Ellen Datlow. Available in Hardcover and Trade paperback from St. Martins, I think. Highly recommended to anyone who likes fantasy. Or anyone who thinks they don't like fantasy... you can't help but enjoy this anthology. And discover writers that will grow to be your favorites. Terri has some novels forthcoming, including one with artwork by Brian Froud. The hardcover anthology _The Armless Maiden_ which Terri edited and contributed to, is still available in most bookstores. Recommended. She's the one who suggested Liavek and has edited most of the authors contained in those books at one time or another. > btw, do the Flash Girls have a kit available for > radio stations? we finally have a halfway decent show in the evenings > here, would like to see a few more women artists get some airplay though. Yup, they have kits for radio stations and potential venues for shows. Email me with addresses, contact people, other useful information and I'll pass that on to Will Shetterly. The Flash Girls new album is flying off the shelves at Dreamhaven books in Minneapolis. Songs from it have been played on Mpls radio stations (usually in the "local" shows, we're trying to get a song or two into rotation). The mailing list is fun... Email me for more information on any of this stuff. And she's got plenty of musician friends, so it wouldn't surprise me a bit if some famous guests joined her onstage at some point during the show. I'd have to say she is an erratic live performer. The first TT show I saw I thought was horrible. (Fairness note: it may have been where we were in the club.... It was voted the best show of the year, and I've seen other shows where when I moved to another location, things suddenly sounded better.) The next time I saw TT, following Everythings Different Now, I was totally blown away. One of the best shows I've seen. In fact, it was so good that I ended up seeing them 4 times in 5 days, which must be some sort of record. Since then I've seen her before and after Whatever, and have enjoyed every show, but haven't found any as revelatory as those last TT shows. I would see her at any opportunity though, because the show's almost guaranteed to be decent. And if it really clicks, it could be amazing. I really wish I'd seen one of the shows she did with Squeeze, where they played together, alternating between Squeeze and Aimee's songs. That sounds like a great show. Where's it at anyway? Is she actually on tour or is this a one shot deal? If anyone has tour info... please share. For the benefit of newbies to ecto, the HBP is a compilation of music and spoken greetings sent in by ectophiles, which we send to Happy every year on her birthday. It's easy to participate in this ongoing venture: simply select one or more musical selections--which may be from recordings, or your own performance--add your own introductory comments, and send them on a c-100 cassette to Doug Burks. Doug will assemble them into a final product, which will be sent to Happy and made available to ectophiles everywhere through the dubbing project. If you can't record voice on your equipment, you can send me a prepared text, which I will read verbatim onto the final product. The only restrictions are that you not submit tracks from Happy's own albums, and that all your musical selections and introductions not total more than tem minutes. Apart from that, it's totally free-form. Prepared introductions to your musical selections, if you don't record them yourself (which is the preferred method), can be sent to me at any of the following: PRIMARY EMAIL ADDRESS: Mitch.Pravatiner@launchpad.unc.edu ALTERNATE EMAIL ADDRESS: mapravat@prairienet.org SNAILMAIL ADDRESS: 8025 S. Oglesby Ave., Chicago, IL 60617-1134, USA Tapes should be snailmailed to Doug at the following address: Doug Burks, 2223 NW 59th St., Apt. 2, Seattle, WA 98107, USA Questions can be emailed to me at the addresses named above, or to Doug at dbx@netcom.com (but tapes can't be emailed to him there :-) ). I can't think of a more productive way to spend the upcoming long weekend (in the U.S), or the upcoming normal-length weekend (in the rest of the world), than choosing your HBP contributions, putting them on tape, and sending them in to Doug (and your intro to me, if you want to go that route). So let's all help to get Happy through her 30th birthday by making this, in the great words of Rose Mulvale, "The most amazing and compelling audio tape ever created."
