I actually went there for a reason: last week, when I had no money, the had Sarah McLachlan's _Freedom Sessions_ CD+MM in the used bin. Well, I got money, went there and it was gone. Doesn't surprise me, though. $7.99 is an excellent price to pay for it. Ended up, though, coming out of there with Mae Moore's _bohemia_. After one listen through it, it's a great CD. Very "pretty", meaning that it's airy, full of life, and a great, calming piece of art. I really enjoy it. Recommended. Unfortunately, I had a dilemma while there: should I pick up Mae Moore, or Lois. You alread know I picked Mae, but what are other people's opinions? I don't remember the exact disc, but it will probably be there next week. The used bins here are great. That's how I got a hold of Nan Vernon's _Manta Ray_. They also have the Sundays; Sarah's _fumbling towards ecstasy_; Katell Keineg; suddenly, tammy!; Victoria Williams; etc. etc. Unfortunately for the rest of this town - fortunately for me:-) - people just don't seem to like ecto-ish music. I bet if we had a decent radio station things would be different. Currently, Alanis Morrissette's popular song (gads, memory is hard to come by) is in HEAVY rotation, and it's evident in the stores. No one has it, and it appears no one can keep it in stock. When will people learn? I don't know much about it, but I heard the first single on the radio last week. It's more uptempo, melodic and hooky, an interesting progression for her. I thought it was great, in fact I liked it better than anything I'd heard from Bohemia, although I really only heard the singles from that one. Hopefully the rest of the album is as solid. "You Oughta Know", from "Jagged Little Pill". I gave the CD a quick spin last night, and thought it sounded pretty pop-dance oriented, with a bit of an "alternative" slant to it. I actually liked her debut CD better, this one sounds like it will burn easily. It seems like she lacks range here somehow, although she does have good power and there are definitely some good hooks in the music. If you like the first single, you'd probably like the entire CD, at least for a while. It's rumored to be the last of the Vampire Chronicles, and as much as I love TVC and Anne Rice, I have to say I'm kinda glad. _The Tale of the Body Thief_ was dreadful and the excerpt I read of _Memnoch_ in the latest _Rolling Stone_ (Jim Carrey as Coppertone girl on the cover) seems equally silly. Lestat meets God and the Devil and goes to Heaven and Hell. *sigh* What was Anne thinking? There are so many loose ends left in _Queen of the Damned_ and there are tons of interesting directions she could be going with the Chronicles. Why does she instead insist on writing about Lestat's Big Adventures? It's not the kind of thing I'd normally bother to mention here, except I was surprised by the opening act, Mary Karizan, who played a great set backed by the 3 other musicians in her band. I think she's from Chicago, accompanies herself on acoustic guitar while her band plays electric, and is signed to Atlantic Records. Her voice is practically a dead ringer for Victoria Williams with the same narrow range and tone, but her songs are more upbeat and positive, kind of roots-rock oriented. She had lots of energy in her performance, then between songs came off as being pretty shy, letting her band members handle most of the between-song chatter. I really liked her; Anybody seen or heard of her before, or know how the album is? On the way home, which took the better part of an hour, I fired up a couple new CD's that I'd loaded into the changer. Natalie Merchant's new one, which from all accounts I'd heard is generally quiet and uncompelling but well-performed. I love Natalie's work, but found myself getting bored with the CD by about half-way through. The songs all seem good, but I wish she's mixed up the tempo a bit more. Natalie is still great though, and I really like a track called "Where I Go", along with "Carnival" of course, as well as the first two tracks. The other CD I checked out is definitely not ectofodder, but if you're like me and tend to like other types of music, like Seattle-style rock, then listen up. I can almost guarantee this one is going to end up in the year's top 5. The band is called Silverchair, they're 16 & 17 years old from Australia, and the album is called Frogstomp. They sound very much like Pearl Jam, and IMHO this record is everything Pearl Jam has failed to deliver since their first album. The music is passionate, and the record is brilliant, WAY beyond these musicians' years. If you don't like Pearl Jam's "10", then you'll hate this one too, but I haven't heard an album that hit me this hard on first listen in quite a while. Sorry to wander from the musical style of choice here on this one, but since it's just good music, I thought it might interest a few of you. ttyl, - ------------------------------- DAN STARK dstark@freenet.niagara.com St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada ------------------------------ From: das freshmaker!
