HELLO! so after being without internet access for three weeks (i have been without computer for three weeks, hence no access to anything), i am BACK! so wading through three weeks of ecto mail (good thing i am on digest!) as well as the other 3000 messages that i had, i thought i would say a quick hello to all out there. 3000 messages! huge for me (though probably average for woj eh?) looks like i missed out on a lot of nifty threads...ah well. you win some you lose some eh? for all those interested i mentioned how i had a new job and was rather excited about it, well my initial excitement has gone done, but i still enjoy it a lot. how can you not like a job where you get to wear tshirts and jeans, pet a cat, and listen to ecto music all day long, while discussing and selling books with really neat customers? and of course a large majority of the staff are closet ectophiles. i know they are. they just don't know it. i mean they are the first people here in st. louis that i have ever met that even know who jane siberry is! and of course they love sarah and kate and tori (well somewhat less, but i shan't fault them for that, since they also like loreena, and one coworker knows almost more about ectolike music than me!) i keep on playing happy's stuff and i keep on hearing "is this kate?" from everyone. i know that i shall convert them eventually. and i had two customers ask about jane siberry when i played the walking! i love that. same went when i played the hector zazou thingie. so now i have a new band to ask about. the (soon to be an) ectophile guy who knows a hell of a lot about music introduced me to a band called "mouth music" which i promptly found in the used bin for $7. it was their latest (on rykodisc). anyone know anything about them? i know they have three albums out and one remix album as well as a single or two here or there. nice stuff. some african percussions and a little bit of ambient trance stuff with a nice voice layered on top. anyone know about them? have they been discussed before and i was complete ignorant? oh yeah i only have their latest, "shorelife" so i don't know that much about their other two albums. so for those interested i have moved into my new apartment. new apartment, new phone number, new job. old email account (but it might change in three months from now, don't worry i won't go far though). if you want all the lovely details of everything email me direct. i can give you more info...you know who you are. :) i also finally have gotten around to listening to the full suddenly tammy album. i had such a hard time getting through it. but it got better. i sorta of like it now (i found it annoying before). sorta still addicted to the new jill sobule album. don't know why. i don't even think it is that strong an album musically. i just love it though dammnit! wassdamattawithme? i am looking forward to the new jane album (what was street date? aug 15th? so that means in record label terms dec 15th right?). she better some in concert somewhere within driving distance....does anyone know about the 20 min. song rumored to be included in it? is it going to be a hidden track, an extra disc, bonus lim edt thing or what? finally got sarah's FS + MM. i can't get the MM to work right! i get the quicktime movie to work okay but no sound comes out! am i doing something wrong? i only have headphones, not speakers. is that the problem? got a neato PJH bootleg cheap. $15. i hate to line the pocket of an italian bootlegger, so if there is demand i will submit it to the ecto TDP. it is PJH europe 93. (oh yeah for those initial's impared PJH is PJ harvey). oh and one more thing to annoy everyone with. i am suppose to create a local music sampler for woj, but haven't gotten around to it. in doing a little research i found that there are quite a few local (or at least semi local) bands that are ectofodder. is there any interest in my tape? i would love to distribute unsigned bands music to interested party, and who knows who would get a hold of it? perhaps it will end up in the hands of someone cool A&R label man. of course it might take more work to do it, i SHOULD get the bands permission and all..... ah well. love and hugs and kisses to all. if i owe you a tape, email me and yell at me. i will dig it up and find it. promise. special hugs go to gina, michael, woj & meth, vicky, and ginger (are you on here?) for being darn nice people. if i forgot someone - i suck. love irvin iflin@artsci.wustl.edu ------------------------------ From: NyxNshade@aol.com Date: Tue, 20 Jun 1995 01:45:57 -0400 Subject: Blah blah I should post more often. The song, however, isn't my favorite of Happy's, no. >Same as >the line in Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling": "It's my heart that >pounds beneath my flesh, it's my mouth that pushes out this >breath..." Guess my brain damage must be >worse than we suspected. Is the new Jane Siberry out? I should probably check for it this weekend... I had to replace my copy of "Rearmament" when "Be Careful what you say" started skipping like mad. I then went Ani DiFranco mad and bought all her albums (is her new one out yet? It was supposed to be out last week...) Other than that, it's been pretty boring in the new purchase area. I finally picked up Jewel, which I wasn't terribly impressed with at first. It's grown on me since, but even so, I only listen to 4 songs off of it; the rest grate half the time and are just *there* the rest of the time. After mumbling and groaning (to myself anyway) about how I was unimpressed by Milla when I heard her full album, I decided to revisit it care of my I-Card, and ended up buying it. Go figure. Great album. :) I also picked up Aimee Mann's album, "Whatever". I guess she's not really ecto-fare, too mainstream, but it's a mindblowingly incredible album anyway. ;> CD's I should have gotten by now, but haven't: Nan Vernon, Manta Ray - Gotta hear if she lives up to the hype. SOMETHING by Over The Rhine - Just sampled their music with the I-Card, and fell in love. Unfortunately, I was broke at the time. ;> Suddenly, Tammy! (forget the album name) - I looked at it. Unfortunately, the I-Station doesn't have it on record yet, and I'm very cautious with my purchases of late, after buying a few albums on recommendation that I have yet to play again. Lisa Cerbone - I keep hearing about how wonderful she is, but... I can't find a single album of hers! It's very discouraging. Any idea where I might find something by her (in NYC)? Well, that's it! I've listened to a few cuts at a listening booth, and the two items I found outstanding were map of the world parts one and two. The rest, on first listening, didn't appeal as much, seeming more like little pieces of life and dreams which are a little harder to connect with... (but I'm suspecting that its just that I didn't have as much time to listen to them, and that the style is less overpowering than WIWAB). I guess one reason I especially like WIWAB is that it gives the feeling of "walking between worlds" at times... which always appeals to me.... it seems to have very primal connections as well. Some of the lyrics on the other albums seem to have either a dreamlike quality, or are little peices of life / memories... maybe I just need to listen to them more.... I am going to buy some more Jane, and give it a better listen. In the meantime, does anyone *still* have copies of "The Walking"? I'd be happy to buy one, since no one else has copies any more! I saw an article >about her in the local newspaper, and it turns out she's originally >from Omaha. Although I haven't heard anything yet, I was wondering if >anybody has, and what they think. Thanks. Laura Love is absolutely fantastic! I'm sure the article mentioned that she does "Afro-Celt"... and does she ever! She plays a mean bass guitar, and my coworker, upon hearing her, stated that he had to buy everything ever done by this woman, and I feel the same way (BTW, he hasn't *ever* been so taken with anything I've played him, and he likes a lot of the stuff -- he tends to have a soft spot for Celtic, tho). Her music is very rhythmic, passionate, and rich; she sings with deep emotion, yodels, and has a distinctive style. DON'T MISS THIS ONE! I would have written to the list about her sooner, but I'm awaiting more fully ergonomic office setup, due to typing pain... I have the Laura Love Collection, Putumayo World Music, who does compilations. She has three others, "Z Therapy", "Pangaea", and "Helvetica Bold". She writes a high proportion of her own stuff, and the most of the rest is traditional. Her fater whas Preston Love, who played sax w/ Count Basie, Lucky Millinder, Johnie Otis, etc; her mother, Winnie Winston, was a singer for a while as well. Her first three albums were released on her own label, "Octoroon Biography" (PO Box 30853, Seattle, WA 98103; (206) 545-7375). I'll write more on this wonderful artist as I'm able. ------------------------------ From: "Matt Bittner" Date: Tue, 20 Jun 1995 12:41:37 +0000 Subject: Nan Vernon... Well, Just got back from one of those used-cd stores (Disc Go-Round), and picked up Nan Vernon's _Manta Ray_. Good happy music (no pun intended). I went through some of the old archives, remembering that she was mentioned in some past posts, and have the following comments based on my observations as well as the past ecto-comments (tm?). The first song is great. Nice, quick and "bouncy". Her voice has a lot of training. So far, not as great as a range as Happy's - or Kate's - but she does really well. Past posts referred to Kate and Sarah McLachlan. She doesn't sound like any of them - well, maybe a little like "early" Kate - but there is a larger Kate-ness. Her vocal arrangments are very Kate-like. Different ranges coming in and out, excellent harmony, and an occasional "ohh-ohh". Quite nice. The only Sarah-ness I can fathom is with the "upbeat"-ness. This is a CD that will make one "happy". I mentioned before how the latest from PJ is quite dark - and be a little depressing - well, put this one after, and be uplifted. I don't have a favorite song yet - since I'm only getting through the first listen - but I'm not sure if I will. Granted, motorcycle is very upbeat, "bouncy", and rythmic, but time will tell if I decide to make this my favorite. The thing I'm not sure of is where they had this disc. The people at Disc Go-Round decided to stick it in the R&B section. Stuck between Whitney and Chaka-kan (no, they don't believe in alphabetic ordering - which is quite the pain), and I just can't see it. Maybe they decided to stick it there when they couldn't quite figure it out - - or maybe because they never listened to it. Who knows. This is definitely a good disc. I'm fortunate to have a CD-ROM at work, and so can listen to CD's while programming. (Or tapes, since I have my own tape player.) So, when I'm getting into programming, something uplifting helps. As I gets pissed at the wonderful world that is Windows, then the PJ goes in, and I start bashing my head against the monitor (this ALWAYS helps getting the brain thinking on the same level as MicroSoft programmers...). I really should be in bed (I HATE summer colds! :P), but it's too damn hot to sleep. Bleagh. Anybody wanna send me a ticket to the Southern Hemisphere? ;> Anyway, I just wanted to post a couple real quick ones, which will be fleshed out later when I have time and energy. 1.) I think it's momentous that ecto reached its 4th birthday without hardly any fanfare, and nobody did the ritual Reposting Of The First Day's Messages!!! What is *wrong* with you people??? ;> 2.) Saw Katell Keineg again last Friday night at the Mercury Lounge (hi, chandra! :). Great show. Katell was in much better form, but the band wasn't as tight as they were at Maxwell's the previous week. Jane Scarpantoni (!) opened!!! Footah and Chris Sampson shoulda been there, dammit -- it was just so cool. Jane played cello (natch) and was accompanied by somebody named Matthew Pearce on violin (he looked JUST like the cute balding angst-ridden doctor on ER), and they called themselves the Unsung String Duo. Nothing recorded yet, alas, but they're looking for a deal. I'll be first in line to buy it. Wowza. Jane Scarpantoni is a weird bird, though... 3.) Speaking of being first in line, I picked up Natalie Merchant's album _Tigerlily_ today, and listened to it twice on the way home. In a nutshell (for chandra's benefit), it's the album 10,000 Maniacs would have made had Natalie stayed with the band. Nothing groundbreaking musically or lyrically, mellow pretty much throughout, Natalie's in fine voice (though she's being way too articulate for my tastes these days -- I could actually understand what the songs were about without looking at the liner notes... sigh, how the mighty have fallen :). Lots of reminiscences to songs like "I'm Not The Man", "How You've Grown", "Circle Dream" etc. from _Or Time In Eden_. I love it, but I would run out and buy a tape of Natalie reading the Jamestown Classified Ads and love it too. :> If you weren't a fan of Natalie Merchant before, this album probably won't convert you. If you liked where 10KM were going with _Our Time In Eden_, then chances are _Tigerlily_ will be a worthwhile purchase. Hope that helps -- O oops I'll get to an official review later, after it's had more of a chance to sink in. Hey, Katell Keineg sings backup on "Carnival" -- I heard it on the radio the other day and had no doubt it was her. Nice contribution, if subtle. 4.) I concur with Mike that Suddenly, Tammy! were phoquing awesome last Thursday night -- I'll review that one later, too (I have some corrections and elaborations from his post ;). 5.) Anybody going to see Sarah McLachlan and the Chieftains in New Haven on July 14th? Maybe we can arrange a pre-concert, during-Ron-Sexsmith's-set get-together for dinner or something, if other 'philes will be there... 6.) Bjork's album is out?!? The idiot in Strawberries today had no clue, and they didn't have any in stock. Grrrr... no Hector Zazou, either. :P But I did find a copy of the KCRW Rare on Air thing featuring Tori, Natalie, Brendan Perry, Lucinda Williams etc. etc. etc, grossly misfiled under "Z", so all was not lost - I haven't seen that anywhere!
