OK, I think this is the last time I'll have new info on the Sarah/Chieftans show at Merriweather. By the way, it's billed as an accoustic show. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (June 16) at 4:00. The show is on July 19 at 8:00. Tickets are $32.50, $25, $17.50 (or maybe 19.50, I forget. These are for the lawn.) All tickets have the usual Merrriwether/Ticketmaster charge, which is unbelievably high even for TM. That is, $3.50 service charge, $1.50 handling charge. $2.50 parking charge (regardless of whether or not you drive there). In fact, whenever I consider a Merriwether show, I choke on those charges and generally change my mind. I like her stuff, enough in fact that I bought her first album. That was released simply under the name "Alanis" in 1991 on MCA (in Canada anyway), when she was 17 I believe. It produced 4 hits on Canadian Top 40/dance stations and MuchMusic. She's from Ottawa, and the promo stuff says she's noticably matured and improved her style for this new album, which I haven't heard yet. Coincidentally, I found this on Usenet's rec.music.promotional yesterday. > Alanis Morissette (Album release 6/13) > Title: Jagged Little Pill > Label: Maverick/Reprise > > Compact Disc 2-45901-P > Cassette 4-45901-I > > > Selections: > All I Really Want > You Oughta Know > Perfect > Hand In My Pocket > Right Through You > Forgiven > You Learn > Head Over Feet > Mary Jane > Ironic > Not The Doctor > Wake Up > > Personnel: Alanis Morissette, vocals, harmonica; Glen Ballard, guitars, > keyboards, programming; Matt Laug, Rob Ladd, drums; Lance Morrison, bass; > Michael Thompson, organ; Basil Fung, Joel Shearer, guitar; Benmont Tench, > piano > Producer: Glen Ballard > Guests: Dave Navarro, guitars; Flea, bass > Featured Tracks: "You Oughta Know" (single/video), "Hand In My Pocket," > "You Learn" > Format: Alternative/College > > -- Although she's only recently passed her 20th birthday, Alanis > Morissette's Maverick debut proves that she possesses a wealth of insight > and an off-kilter sense of humor that's at once untainted and matured. > Jagged Little Pill offers jarringly honest, frequently provocative songs > rendered with Alanis's clear, expressive voice. > -- The album's first single will be "You Oughta Know," which features guest > appearances from Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers), > Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & The > Heartbreakers). > -- Expect extensive promotion and publicity to bring Alanis's fascinating > new talent to broad public acclaim. > > > ========================================================================== DAN STARK ~~~*~~~ Southern Ontario's Best Rock - --------- | 97.7 HTZ-FM dstark@freenet.niagara.com /|\ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - / | \ 610/CKTB St. Catharines-Niagara ------------------------------ From: JC214@aol.com Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 20:20:32 -0400 Subject: it's tropical hot dog night! i am SO bummed! driving around kingston ny (home of AG) today i heard announced on wdst that JEWEL was playing tonight on a BOAT CRUISING ON THE HUDSON RIVER!!!! lunacy prevailed as i slammed into the next gas station with nothing in mind but "find a phone"....which i did....and when i called wdst they very cheerfully told me that ALL 75 TICKETS WERE ALREADY SOLD!!! to the squids i'm sure...... fortunately the show is being broadcast live on wdst at 12 midnight tonight..... unfortunatley i can't pick up wdst at my house......however i WAS able to convince a dear friend to record it for me.....if she remembers..... a bunch of ectopersons e-mailed me asking about "volume". it's a cd/book-type magazine that is u.k. in origin. it comes out every three months or so with 17-22 tracks, most unreleased, live, or special remixes along with interesting articles on each artist featured. i get it at my local cd store who deals with a lot of importers but i know that tower also carries it since it's now imported by caroline (i think). info inside says: telephone:071-706-8122 and e-mail: volume@volume.demon.co.uk subscriptions are 39pounds for the uk or 45pounds for the "rest of the world" for a year. this issue's (#13) artists are: Krispy 3, Whiteout, Boo Radleys, Animals That Swim, Juliana Hatfield, Elcka, Interact, Throwing Muses, Kaliphz, Luscious Jackson, Tribute To Nothing, Flying Medallions, Nova Mob, Done Lying Done, Rosa Mota, Edwyn Collins, Tindersticks, Radiohead, Velo Deluxe, Reverberation and Heather Nova. I told you I'd witnessed her live performance as one of the opening acts for Throwing Muses in Memphis this April. There she did an acoustic set showcasing her strong folkish voice, which I have previously compared in strength to a Joni Mitchellish/Jane Siberry vocal style, but which is a bit stronger (but has less high range) than Siberry's. Really, though, comparisons do not do Howle justice, as her voice has a Southern flavor that marks identifiably her own sound, tinged with a yodellish vein at times, and was best displayed in her exuberant a cappella gospel number which held the audience enrapt at the performance. Howle's stage presence was energetic and frenetically jittery, as she punctuated her patter with Southern humor and local color, along with some fairly forgettable off-color remarks about nightclub restrooms, etc., as though overly impressed with her road forays (no, she's not the only one who's ever had to play Cicero's, or seen its john, bla bla bla). Still, she has accomplished quite a bit for which to feel a bit boastful, as will be shown below. Her 7-inch record on Simple Machines Records includes, as previously posted on Ecto, the whimsical numbers "The Wrestling Song," "The Frog Song," and "Back of Your Mind," all displaying a very creative lyrical style. Still, her goofier side seems emphasized so far on the Simple Machines releases like this 1993 one and the live cut on the *Working Holiday Party* cd from 1994. Today, however, I discovered a real treat with the arrival in the mail of her 1993 release as lead singer/writer for the folk power-pop group Lay Quiet Awhile, which has made one full length cd on indigo girl Amy Ray's label, Daemon Records. (I found mine through Tower/Atlanta, but you can also go thru the distributor Ichiban Records in Atlanta for a telephone order probably, or write Daemon). The members of this group are Howle (vocals/guitar), Dan Cook (bass/vocals), Phil Cook (guitar/vocals), and David Wright (drums). They opened for the Indigo Girls in England for shows in late May and early June of 1994. Ms. Howle also toured solo in England during that period before returning to SC -- news accounts show a very positive reaction to her energetic style in England, which these accounts also termed "emotional," though this aspect of her work was in little evidence during her Memphis warm-up act appearance. I found the Lay Quiet Awhile cd, *Delicate Wire*, to be very engaging as soon as I began listening -- it held my attention throughout. Howle's vocal abilities were shown to be very impressive -- I thought to myself that had I been at a show featuring this band and the Indigo Girls, that I'd probably have been more interested in LQA, just on vocal sound alone (even tho the IG writing skills are bit more mature...). Howle shows herself on this release to be as energetic, creative, frank and unique a writer as she is gifted a vocalist. I really recommend this cd as a better introduction to Howle's developing abilities than her Simple Machines 7-inch, even though the 7-inch displays her in the acoustic mode in which I actually heard her live, while LQA sports an electric sound (jangly Southern power pop, verging at times on folkish when the male vocalists join her). Howle is currently working "slowly" on a full length cd due out on Simple Machines Records for a Sep/Oct release date. Addresses of note: Simple Machines, P.O. Box 10290, Arlington, VA 22210-1290; email at SimpleMach@aol.com. For Lay Quiet Awhile, try Daemon Records at P.O. Box 1207, Decatur, GA 30031. Howle and her group have received a lot of press from Columbia (SC) and Charlotte (NC) papers, most recently being touted as appearing this month at a local Columbia club (Rockafellas') in a special event pop group called Danielle Howle and the Tantrums (possibly only for that night?). LQA received some coverage in the Northeast touring last year with the Indigo Girls. While most press was favorable, they did get a bit of a slap from Jim Sullivan of *The Boston Globe*, who seemed to adore the Indigo Girls, while being "annoyed" by Danielle's "coy, aren't-I-a-silly-girl posturing" in her performance with the group. On the whole, I'd say that while it is conceivable that Howle might possibly "annoy" on occasion when she gets too caught up in her between-song schtick, in general her performance as an artist ranges from silly/giddy to outright incredible technically, with a high energy level at all times. Thus far on record she's best been captured as a serious writer/singer on her LQA work, and may well demonstrate even further maturity, stream-of-consciousness imagination and plain-spoken lyricism in her upcoming release on Simple Machines. (Her 7-inch is nothing to sneeze at either.) Given her frenetic energy level and the regular live appearances she has been making to build momentum and visibility in her career, she seems likely to have what it takes to propel herself to the folk music foreground out of obscurity -- and don't forget she's a young talent with lots of time to grow, yet starting out ahead of the game already with evident huge potential... - --mary m 6/15/95 ------------------------------ From: Mary M Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1995 00:53:21 -0500 Subject: oh no danielle update This oh-no-another update on Danielle Howle is only occurring because I just got an email from Simple Machines Records' mailing list. (I feel like a "snoop") the Casa de Klik is a very very cool apartment/loft type place over a Mexican restaurant (a Tacqueria?). He lives with several other people - it seems like a renovated (former) office space judging by the size/layout of it. While I don't remember a bird cage (it was pretty dark, and overwhelming), I do remember lots and lots of stuff (I seem to remember a skull or two, candles) mostly fabric draped on the walls, cool carpeting on the floor, dark moody lighting, very very gothic. Most condusive to the type of music they produce there. I believe they do a good portion of their recordings there (on Ridge). Both Julie and Preston are incredibly nice people - IMO not particularly quirky or eccentric - very businesslike. I was never so nervous in an audition before (he asked me to sing acapella a few times, the songs I had brought on tape) because they were very hard to read. I had no idea whatsoever that they were that well known - or had that much of a following. I just assumed they were another Chicago self-produced band paying their dues until they get picked up by a major label (like Liz Phair or Smashing Pumpkins) It was a great learning experience... when Preston called me to say that I had not been chosen, in fact he had not found ANYONE who really wowed him (yet) . .I thanked him for giving me the opportunity, and wished him well on his search. that's pretty much it.... If Pearl Jam only cared about the money, they wouldn't have fought as long and as hard as they have. They must have lost considerable money during their time off the road. Plus, I'd be really surprised if they go out there and charge $35 a ticket (and up) like REM is doing. Plus, they absorbed some of the cost of putting out a fancier cd package on their last release, to keep the price from being hiked up. While I'm not much of a PJ fan, it seems to me that they have been doing everything they can to share their music with fans at as reasonable a price as possible. I'm constantly disgusted with TicketMaster, but I can't bring myself to do a total boycot either. I'll use every opportunity possible to buy tickets in another way, but when it comes down to it, the deicision is basically whether or not you are going to the show. I'd rather bite the bullet a few times to see Sarah or someone fantastic when they come to town. The alternative to a lot of great concert experiences is bitterness and frustration, and that seems a sorry replacement for a wonderful show. I'm not even convinced that breaking the ticketmaster stranglehold will even help much. As I posted earlier, the Sarah/Chieftans show is being handled by ProTix, a local TM competitor that seems to be gaining ground, and their service charges were virtually identical or perhaps even greater ($5 a ticket for that show). Anyway, I'd love to take part in some sort of mass movement that contributed to the demise of ticketmaster, but I'm not willing to sit home moping while all the good shows come through town, and sell out anyway. Pearl Jam has probably done more than anyone to call attention to, and help in the struggle agains, the evil TM. For some people it provides easy access to buy tickets (credit card over the phone) for shows that they would otherwise be unable to attend. Most box offices only accept cash and that can be a burden when buying tickets for a large group of friends or when you're strapped for money at the moment. If I wanted to see a show anywhere in the U.S. or even abroad for that matter, it would be within my means. Availability at larger venues also enables musicians to play in front of enormous masses of people. I think each of us know the hell of not having tickets to a sold out concert. More tickets=more seats=more chances to buy a ticket for that seat. Yes, of course the prices are obscene...but money is only money and regardless of the price, the sweet memory of the show lasts forever whereas money comes and goes. In other news, in a month I will be once again off across the U.S. I will be stopping in Chicago (Hi Vickie and Chris!
