Pravatiner" Date: Wed, 14 Jun 95 19:39:48 EDT Subject: A belated exhortation Our good friend Happy Rhodes will hit her 30th birthday on August 9th. Even if it were not that round a number, we on ecto would be putting together this year's Happy Birthday Project, our semiannual audio _festschrift_ (along with the Happy Gift Project during the Christmas _et al._ season), to commemorate the occasion. The fact that she's reaching this most pivotal benchmark in the course of human development should give us a special sense of urgency about making HBP95 an especially good installment in what has come to be recognized as a continuing series of good installments. This post is intended to solicit your participation. For the benefit of anyone seeing this phenomenon discussed for the first time: HGP/HBP is a series of compilation tapes which we, the ectophile community, create collectively in honor of Happy's birthday on the one hand, and the solstice season on the other. The tapes are sent to Happy as a birthday or Christmas gift, as the case may be, from all of us; and then made available to us through Doug Burks' dubbing project (to which he has introduced you in separate posts in these pages). Those of us who are familiar with the ones that have been put together previously will tell you that they are eclectic, high-quality collections good for hours of listening pleasure. As Ross Perot once said, here's the deal: Pick out one or more musical selections, record them on a cassette, and snailmail them to Doug. You essentially have complete freedom in your choice of music--no need to limit yourself to the ecto style of lyrical interlude. The only limitation, if you can call it that, is that you can't submit Happy's own recordings. Covers of Happy's music, on the other hand, are acceptable--as are any and all other original performances, particularly if they're of your own original compositions. Lest there be any ambiguity, you need not go to herculean lengths to compose and perform your own musical interludes--recorded music is equally well treasured, and is what most of us actually contribute. You are encouraged to record prefatory remarks on the same tape as your musical selection(s)--introductions to the musical numbers, words of greeting to Happy, or whatever. If you don't have the equipment to record a spoken intro yourself, there is an alternative means of getting your words read into the record, which I'll discuss in greater detail momentarily. Moreover, you are free to contribute more than one musical selection, no need to agonize over which single selection to send. The only absolute requirement is that all of your musical contributions, and their associated spoken bits, cannot exceed a total of ten (10) minutes in length. You may, however, submit however much "filler" music you deem advisable, for insertion as needed in what would otherwise be dead air on the final tapes, in addition to your primary selections. In the unlikely event that two people contribute the same selection, the one received first will be used. As I mentioned before, if you can't record your own introductory remarks, you can send them to me to read on the tape. This is easy for me to do, since I'll be recording the general introductions, transitions, closing comments, etc. But whether you or I ultimately utter your words, you are urged to get them into the final product one way or the other; we want to minimize the incidence of unintroduced selections on the final product. There are three ways to get prepared texts to me. The first is to email them to me at this address, Mitch.Pravatiner@launchpad.unc.edu . This system has had glitch problems in the past, albeit not in the immediate past; so backups/alternatives have been arranged. One of these is my address on another freenet: mapravat@prairienet.org ; the other is my snailmail address: Mitch Pravatiner, 8025 S. Oglesby Ave., Chicago, IL 60617-1134, USA. Keep in mind that this is not the place to send the tape with your musical contribution, and any associated spoken words. The tape (a 100 minute cassette is recommended) containing those things should be snailmailed (the technology to send it over the net with full fidelity not having been perfected yet) to Doug Burks, 2223 NW 59th St., Apt. 2, Seattle, WA 98107, USA. In order to give Doug ample time to assemble the final product, please get your tape in the mail by July 15. Contributors will automatically receive a copy of however much of it fits on the tape on which they send their contributions, plus one cassette from the dubbing project's stocks. Should the whole thing extend over more tapes than that (which has happened), however, you will need to order the remainder from the dubbing project, subject to its normal terms and conditions. For further information on that, write to Doug at dbx@netcom.com . So in a nutshell: let's all help Happy through this pivotal status passage, and make the '95 Happy Birthday Project the mother of all audio _festschriften_. Doug and I look forward to receiving your words and music. Mitch - ----------------- "Don't have to if you don't want to, you know, if it embarrases you. You know, sometimes record company people really piss me off. woj, Mike Curry and I went to Fez in New York City to see Jewel play last night. She was great. However, if Atlantic Records suddenly Went Away tomorrow without a trace, I for one would shed nary a tear. Fez is a tiny place to begin with, and holds maybe 120 people at its absolute legal-limit capacity. Although Jewel was the big name act of the evening she went on at 8:00, *before* the other bands that would normally have opened for her (The Candy Butchers and Jack McKeever) -- Mike theorized this was because the folks from Atlantic wanted to get to bed early, and I agreed. Thanks to Manhattan traffic and a refusal to believe that the guy on the phone at Fez who had told us she would be going on at 8 wasn't confused, woj and I got there late, but we only missed one song. Mike had managed to hold one seat at the one table within view of the stage that hadn't been reserved by Atlantic, and woj made me take it while he went to stand in the corner, ultimately behind two obnixious guys from (surprise!) Atlantic who were intent upon not letting him see a thing. Jewel proceeded to do a wonderful hour-long set that ended up being longer than it was supposed to be -- she kept having "just one more song" to get to. :) She played very little from _Pieces of You_, instead concentrating on stuff she mainly performs live and a lot of new stuff (yay!), which was very much on the silly side, though the song about and for her half-brother ("Nikos") was extremely powerful and rather shook me up. She told some hysterically funny stories in between songs -- one about almost literally running into a bear when she was a kid riding in back of her dad's 3-wheel ATV, and another about how Ike Turner took her parking space when he went to see her play in San Diego and ended up giving her a signed photo of himself which was stamped, "What's love got to do with it -- absolutely nothing!" and had a little ad on the bottom for the "I Still Like Ike Fan Club". :> She was obviously having a very good time. About halfway through her set I noticed someone come in and sit down at the table by the door, who proved to be Jamie Walters (you know, the "rock star"/ "actor" who plays Ray on 90210). He's every bit as weird looking in person as he is on TV, in case anyone was wondering. To his credit, though, he really seemed to enjoy the performance a lot! Must be something about Fez - the first time I was there, at the CMJ thing last fall where we saw Ingrid, Paula Cole, and Anhai, I swear on several sacred objects that Jennie Garth (Kelly from 90210) poked her head in for a few minutes. I wonder what they put in the air mixture in there. :} Anyway... after Jewel was kicked off stage to make room for her opening bands, we tried to make our way up there to buy a poster and say hello. There was, of course, a swarm of Atlantic squid surrounding her, and it was all I could do to worm my way in to buy a poster and thank her for supporting Maine's economy by drinking Poland Spring water (she looked at me kind of funny at that, but said I was welcome :). We waited for Mike to get a chance to say hello, all the while being pushed and shoved by squid who were trying to get a few pieces of Jewel. Finally, after one squid was particularly rude in my general direc- ion I said loudly to Mike, "God forbid any *fans* get a chance to say hello - we're nothing, all we do is buy the records and pay for tickets to the shows." After that we gave up and left them all to their calamarifest in the corner. Come *on* -- if Atlantic wanted to have a private performance, why didn't they just have a private performance? It would have saved both them and us the aggravation of having to deal with one another. Sigh. Sorry to rant... but I'm hating New York City performances more and more with each passing bad experience with squid. On the bright side, though, Jewel was great (I repeat :), and squid notwithstanding, I enjoyed the show quite a bit. Two big toes up and wiggling on the recommend-o-meter. I find that it's really impressive that Jane was able to use her own personal metaphor language and get it out on major record labels. Good poetry isn't always easy to consume, and when the artist isn't trying to rock out with current trends while communicating her poetry, that doesn't equate with "meaninglessness." I did find it helpful, however, when I heard her discuss "Vladimir, Vladimir" in an old televised interview/trailer...it seems that it has a lot to do with memories of her childhood...she talked of how she had to go to bed at 8:30 as a child, when all the rest of the neighborhood kids were still out playing...and she would hear her father walking the neighborhood singing loudly, "You always hurt the one you love...", which words she later found, upon thinking, to be rather horrible.... I mean, she's just sharing her personal experience in a poetic language of personal metaphors...I find it to be challenging, but not meaningless...really a great contribution to the pop music, bucking the easy-to-digest fast-food rock mentality with which we are all so familiar from radio programming -- it's important to get yer bearings shook up a little every now and then.. - --mary (p.s. I'm also looking forward to trying out some of the recommended CDs. It's great to hear about artists that are completely new to me as well as new information/ideas about music I love. I had the same experience with Jane Siberry's music as Jeffrey Hanson. I first heard her on "Calling All Angels" from the "Until the End of the World" soundtrack. Those are still my favorite lyrics of all time: "And every day you face the sunset with such love and intensity. It's almost as if you could crack the code that you'd finally understand what this all means. But if you could do you think you would trade in all the pain and the suffering? For then you'd miss the beauty of the light upon of this earth and the sweetness of the leaving." When I picked up "When I Was a Boy," I had to sit down, listen close and read through the lyrics several times. And I found each song was a loving insight into how we try to puzzle through our lives. I'm having trouble loacting other CDs of hers in this teeny town where I live, but I'll keep trying. I am also eagerly awaiting her next CD. I can respect Pearl Jam's decision, while regretting its necessity. The simple bottom line was that the band decided that its primary responsibility was to be able to play music for its fans, and their position was making it impossible for a huge chunk of the fans to hear them. They also discovered that booking concerts is a massive undertaking, and that they were, at heart, not promoters and businessmen but musicians. It's unfortunate that this made getting back into bed with Ticketbastard necessary, but I think the devoted east coast fans, given a choice between seeing them at a high price as opposed to not being able to see them at all, would choose the former. - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ==== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Organizer, SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List \|| |/ Online Representative, Austin International Poetry Festival \| / Joe Zitt's Home Page\ ------------------------------ From: lakrahn@iw.net (Laurel Krahn) Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 14:02:06 -0500 Subject: Re: What this MUSHroom needs is a good 5-cent virtual cigar Mitch Pravatiner wrote: >The above somehow popped into my head while I was pondering the recent >birth of young Bittner on this list, and of someone's kid on Cybermind. >Clearly I'm spending too much time on the net. :-) True.
