Well, funny you should mention this, because I picked up "A Dove" after hearing the Roches compositions on "Land Before Time II" (a children's full-length cartoon about dinosaurs), after realizing that they composed the only memorable songs of the film (the "Eggs" song is sung quite frequently in our house, with a 2 and 6 year old who are both dinosaur fans). Its the only other Roches I've heard, and although I found it pleasant, I didn't resolve to go out and buy more.... so, what would you recommend I get? (BTW, the cartoon songs are *not* performed by the Roches...). Urges and Leipzig were on the first European pressing of Golden Age of Wireless, (the one that didn't have She Blinded Me With Science on it) and I have them on tape. Nice to have them on CD for the nostalgia value, though Urges isn't a particularly amazing song. Wish they had the 7" of Windpower on it. The other thing that makes it fun for collectors is the first version of "She Blinded Me With Science", which sounds rather like an early discarded remix. Anyway, re: the recent Thomas Dolby thread. I'm sort of reminded of the Spitting Image satire of Orson Welles, in which they say he lived his life backwards. He started out with his masterpieces - War of the Worlds and Citizen Kane - and then worked backwards to progressively worse stuff until he was acting like Salvador Dali doing commercials and the like. Sometimes I feel Dolby's a bit like that. Golden Age of Wireless is still a damned good album. It was, in fact, the album that back in high school convinced me that not all pop music was necessarily awful. But Flat Earth is kinda uneven and his other two albums don't really do much for me. Maybe it's that English talent moving to Hollywood and transmogrifying into a vegetable thing. ;) Still, Dolby's production work is still keeping him in currency, I guess. I've also seen interviews in which he waxes poetic (well at least waxes enthuasiastic) about the future of music distribution over the Internet. - Neil K. - -- Neil K.
