Well.. it seems as if the digests are being delivered to my or-fice one to two days late, or not at all so I'm beginning to get behind things here (arghhh....) What really cheezes me off is that some friends of mine are visiting Chicago for the weekend, and almost didn't get in touch because they thought I was blowing them off by not answering their repeated e-mail attempts. (They called me on the good ol'fashin telephone so all is well after all) . . . That's a problem I cannot solve so I'm not going to stress myself out about it... My question is: What's goin on with the Hapster's Birthday Project? Someone mentioned it a couple weeks ago - - - - Who collects the *stuff* (do we all send tapes or what?) and when are we going to get started. June is not quite bustin out all over, but it wont be long - then July kicks in (and we all take vacations around then eh?) - then AUGUST! (if we're lucky and the entire midwestern region of the U.S. is not covered over by floods! :-/ So.. I for one would like to start thinking about this project. Since I've only been on for a couple months, I've not had the pleasure of participating in the previous efforts, and am looking forward to it! I would also like to put in another unsolicited plug for RHODEWAYS! It took me at least 7 months to get off my arse and send Sharon a check, and she was kind enough to drop me notes every few months to see if I was still interested (I mean, she spent at least $.29 taking a chance that I would not continue to procrastinate!) A couple years ago me and a guy-pal ran a fanzine for a defunct 70's "pop" band (I won't get into it in length here - anybody curious just e-mail me) and it was a royal pain in the butt. We loved it, don't get me wrong, but we never made any money - in fact we lost money with some issues - and had to keep getting after people to subscribe, and answer lots of letters (questions) that were too specific to answer in the fanzine - while still maintaining our day jobs, our regular hobbies (i.e. music, friends, etc.) and our sanity. It ran for about 2 years before we packed it in out of sheer burn-out. Sharon does a wonderful job with this fanzine, and manages to hold down a "day job" too. ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO ARE READING THIS... JUST DO IT! send in the check... come-on... it's an import cd, or dinner and a movie, or a couple Sandman comics . . you will get 4 great issues and get to hear stuff we don't get on ecto (straight from Happy herself.) Amy ------------------------------ From: "Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Date: Fri, 26 May 95 15:37:30 EDT Subject: The science of ecto and other stories As I write this, WBEZ has just broadcast an interview with a physics professor who uses music as a vehicle for demonstrating physical principles to undergraduates. Because I was paying close attention to reading the ecto digest, I didn't absorb all that much of it, but it seemed that a lot of these heuristics had to do with changes in the intensity of waves over time. All this, in turn, reminded me of the notion that mathematical principles, the Pythagorean theorem in particular, can be discerned in music. (Cineastes among us may remember that Richard Kiley in _The Blackboard Jungle_ tried to demonstrate these concepts to his students using his collection of jazz 78's, which mostly stimulated the students to trash the stacks of shellac, but that's neither here nor there.) Naturally, my mind wandered toward the question of where Happy's music might fit into such an enterprise, over and above the obvious example of the relationship of "Down, Down" to Newtonian theories of gravity :-). A long time ago, when Angelos was searching for a life after grad school :-), I got to wondering whether my old high school was in need of science teachers. It seemed to me at the time that this would be a viable vehicle for some subtle Happyvangelism. It would be noteworthy indeed if generations of young minds were to come out of Mr, Kyrlidis' Nth Period Science with Happy's music as at least as profound an intellectual legacy as anything of a purely scientific nature :-). (To be continued, due to impending timeout on today's routing through two freenets). Mitch ------------------------------ From: "Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Date: Fri, 26 May 95 17:00:07 EDT Subject: Picking up the pieces of the other other stories I got my last post to these pages sent off just before my indirect connection thru the other freenet was to time out. It finally timed out just as the mail spool was being resaved; apparently almost all the unread incoming was creamed. I messaged the admins to try to restore it from the backups, assuming there are any; but that will take time, especially on a long weekend. I'm still in shock. Nonetheless, I will try to remember what all I'd intended to say, having taken time out to call up the latest digest from the Web. The next/latest installment of _Piano Jazz_ on NPR apparently will have a musician, whose name I've forgotten, as the guest, whose latest album is called _Equipoise_. Some sort of ecto-synchronicity there :-). It airs in Chicago on WBEZ (91.5) at noon Sunday; listeners in other markets are on their own :-). WRT patchouli oil: Historians of 80's mass-market pop among us may remember that Madonna's _Like a Prayer_ album came saturated with the stuff. WRT Arnold's query on adult alternative stations in Chicago: WKQX (101.1) supposedly has pretentions in that direction, WXRT (93.1) actually makes a go of it. Also check out WNUR (89.3) and WCBR (92.7). Off to try to recover from this unexpected loss :-) :-('. Mitch ------------------------------ From: David Dixon Date: Fri, 26 May 1995 15:04:44 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: The science of ecto and other stories Speaking as a once-and-future physics teacher (and student), I can vouch for the fact that it's much easier to get concepts (especially the physics of waves) across to your students if they can see and hear them for themselves. Examples abound: - "Beating," the phenomenon of interference between two wave sources with slightly different frequencies. Get a friend to stand next to you and sing a sustained, steady pitch. Try to match that pitch; when you're close, but not quite matched, you'll hear beating.. a sort of ..ooOOoo..ooOOoo..ooOOoo.. sound. The closer together in pitch you are, the slower the beating becomes. - The "hot chocolate effect": get a glass of some hot tap water (the hotter the better) and stir it with a spoon, clinking the spoon against the glass. Now pour in some cocoa powder (salt also works, but it's not quite as tasty), and as you stir, listen to the pitch of the spoon clinking against the glass. What you're doing by putting in the powder is changing the speed of sound in the liquid, which changes the pitch. There's also a really cool experiment that requires a laser, a mirror, and a speaker hooked up to a synthesizer, but I don't have time to go into it... Were you thinking about something like the following? 1) Put the mirror on the speaker 2) Aim the laser at the mirror so the reflected laser beam hits a wall 3) Switch off the lights 4) Watch the red dot dance on the wall as the speaker membrane moves when you play something on the synthesizer "Cool" (literally speaking :) experiments does not necessarily need expensive equipment. For a simple demonstration on how you can alter the freezing temperature of liquids by adding chemicals, try the following: * Go to your nearest restaurant/cafeteria/whatever, sit down at a table (without a tablecloth) and obtain the following items: - two drinking glasses (the base of the glasses must not be too thick) - a spoon, knife or fork - enough ice cubes to fill one glass - some table salt - 1-2 tablespoons of water - a napkin * Put the ice into one of the glasses and break the ice into small pieces using the spoon/fork/knife. Generally, the smaller the pieces get, the better. Be careful so you do not break the glass!!!! * If the ice has started melting, pour as much of the water as you can into the other glass. It is critical that the ice is as 'dry' as possible! * Add the table salt to the ice and mix it good (I don't remember the optimal ice/salt ratio, but you can probably find this in an encyclopaedia) * Spill 1-2 tablespoons of water (depending on the base area of the glass) on the table and set the glass in the small pool of water. Remove excess water with the napkin. * Watch and feel the glass getting colder and colder. Eventually, it will become so cold that the water condensing on the outside of the glass and the water on the table will freeze. * Now that the glass ought to be frozen to the tabletop, leave the table quietly. For extra fun, move to the next table and watch closely when someone tries to remove the glass. This experiment *works*; I have tested it at one of the cafeterias on campus :) A word of warning: the water underneath the glass will freeze and stick to the tabletop. Trying to remove the glass while the water is frozen may potentially damage the tabletop.
