Well to begin with, it seems like for some strange reason I haven't been getting all the digests at my work e-mail address so sometimes I miss stuff and have to log into America Online and check my mail there. I did get a treat this weekend because this guy in my office has an account and a 14400 modem so I actually got to see the Ecto Home Page and browsed through the concert photographs. . .that kind of made me smile. Sunday was an adventure for me. . .after driving an out-of-town guest to the airport - through very heavy traffic (it never ceases to amaze me how INTERESTING (not!) several police officers and a tow truck can be to drivers....) I sped back to the club Metro to see Suddenly,Tammy! Tho I missed about 10 minutes of the show, I was still very impressed with their sound live. I really like their poppy-sounding up-tempo numbers... not unlike the 70's style pop I enjoyed as a young-un and still enjoy now. Even though it appeared the band was having equipment problems (it seemed that the stage monitors left much to be desired) they all sounded great, and appeared to be having a good time on stage. As Mike mentioned in his earlier post, we did get a chance to go "backstage" and chat. Turned out that Beth wasn't feeling particularly well as they had been driving all day and then arrived in Chicago only to have to set up for the night's show with not much opportunity to rest. They all were quite pleasant and friendly, and I thought pretty darn nice for inviting the interested audience members back to talk after the show. Jay (Sorrentino, the drummer, for those of you unfamiliar with the band) and I ended up chatting about bands we listened to in high school, early concerts we had seen, and Beth's influences (one of which being Carole King - one of my faves) until he politely "ducked out" and disappeared backstage - I assume - to watch wolfgang press, the band they were supporting. I highly recommend everyone who can, check out this fine band (Suddenly, Tammy! that is..) live (and on CD.) Their current release is available on Warner Bros. and as Mike gushed - the piano balads with just Beth singing and playing are exquisite. Her voice is childlike without being overly sugary-sweet and her melodies show creativity and maturity in composition. I also picked up their first s/t CD but have not had the opportunity to play the heck out of it yet. ---------------------------------------------------- personally.... my life is kind of undergoing reconstruction ("...mortar me here, mortar me there, gonna need stronger underwear uh huh to keep this spine upright.." Happy Rhodes) After much thought and angst, I broke up with a guy I had been involved with on and off for about 2 years now. I've made mention of him as my long-distance boyfriend and probably other names :-/ . . but it has been the source of great pain and distress over the past couple days. He was my musical collaborator, but had taken things too far when I expressed an interest in getting in a band in my home town (because I want to PLAY OUT!) - and he shot it down. I expressed interest in moving to a warmer climate (I think Alaska is warmer than Chicago this time of year..) and he shot it down. He was becoming more negative than positive and when I would try to discuss the communication problems he would say "oh don't take me seriously.." but he still continued to be the source of the nagging little voice in my head that said ".. oh no you can't" There were other problems too but I won't bore you with them.. So I broke it off. He was extremely destroyed (forgive the poor grammar) we spent 3 hours on the phone (his bill) going around in circles and winding up in the same place. Not only have I lost the source of a 4-track recorder and some demos that were never finished, but someone who I thought was my friend - seemed only to want me around for selfish reasons. Also, he was the source of a very powerful computer which would have been great to get a `net account so I could do more than read e-mail (i.e. the Mush!) Also.. I don't get to see King Crimson in Cincinnati :-( . So.. i pick up my guitar and play. I do have good friends around to help me - and I always enjoy reading ECTO! posts. Thanks for letting me vent yal... see yah in the funny papers... " Never cry for the rain, it brings us soothing sounds to sleep by.." HR Amy ------------------------------ From: "Mitchell A. He's everything I used to be as a wordsmith :-). Between us, it seems to me we may have the makings of another Algonquin Round Table one of these days, should I ever be lucky enough to regain my touch. Get-well wishes to Onica. I had meant to mention it yesterday, but it fell through the cracks in the press of getting through the backlog. WRT Veronica's problem connecting with the Sony homepage: If she typed exactly what was printed on the album, she apparently has become an innocent victim of an apparent tendency on the part of certain people to assume that everyone will know to insert the leading http:// on the URL when trying to call up a web page. Tack on that little verbiage and it should work. WRT the incongruity of Holly Cole performing in Vegas: Presumably the available work is subject to vicissitudes in her line of work, as it is in many others. It's the only remotely plausible explanation I can think of. On the other hand, it may be desirable to have an alternative to all those lounge-lizard acts available to the local music consumers :-). The true etymology of the Miranda Sex Garden's name, for some unknown reason, reminded me of something I read in 1985, to the effect that of the sundry film scripts then being pitched to Madonna, she had a particular aversion to the prospect of acting in science fiction films. I immediately concluded that it was due to an apprehension on her part, that industry wags would posthaste apply the sobriquet "Lucky Star Wars" to any such project in which she were to become involved :-). The etymology of Suddenly, Tammy's name, for some unknown reason, made me think of the "Ike and Tina Turner" t-shirt worn by John Cusack in _The Sure Thing_ (which had likenesses of President Eisenhower and TT), and that one could do something similar with Tammy Faye Bakker and Tom Baker under the imprimatur "Tammy and the Doctor." Whether they could ever fully efface the memory of Sandra Dee and John Gavin in the original roles is, of course, less certain :-). Why bother to start another MUSH room, now that the original is working adequately again? Or is the reason that there's hardly anyone there most of the time that everyone has already bugged out to the other site? It's got Holly Cole singing BVs on almost every track and Rebecca Jenkins on one. What can you Canadiophiles tell about this guy? He's got a totally interesting voice. Deep and smoothly hoarse. A cross between Nick Cave and the CTD guy. Pretty zippy songs. The CD had a card from House of Fringe, which advertises itself a serving your hardcore, thrash, speed metal, retro-rock, funk, and punk needs -- though I can't see exactly where Pomo lies in this spectrum. Perhaps retro-spfunk? Definitely not the kind of stuff you'd expect to hear Holly Cole singing with. Recommended. It's oil extracted from a patchouli plant, a plant that comes from India. It yields a perfumed, distinctively scented oil. You can use it as a perfume or buy incense with patchouli in it. Nice stuff, though it can be a bit cloying if used to excess. Yes it's me, rising from the morass that is my life. Maybe sometime in July I'll have a chance to catch up on all my mail. Hah. In a nutshell, in the past two weeks I have seen the following musical live performances, not necessarily in order: Throwing Muses (Toad's Place, New Haven, CT) Suddenly, Tammy! (Irving Plaza, NYC) Acoustic Junction, Harte Rouge, Dar Williams, and The Nields (Required Listening, The Bottom Line, NYC) The Innocence Mission (Fez, NYC) All were INCREDIBLE shows in their own ways, and I promise that reviews are forthcoming one of these years! :} But woj hasn't had time to mention them either, so I don't feel so bad. Other ectophiles were in attendance at all of the above, too (footah!, Tamar, JeffW and Mike Curry, to name names) in case you're keeping score. And now I realize that I never posted my review of Laura Love and Dougie Mac Lean either, nigh on a month ago already. Sigh. Also in the past two weeks, we have discovered a pub in New York City (Old Peculiar, cf. footah, who was of course in attendance as well :) that not only serves Erdinger Weissbier (the only place outside of Bayern that does so as far as I know), but has Kate Bush on the jukebox! (TRS, but hey - it makes sense :) And last night when we entered Fez to see I , they had Sarah's FtE on the sound system. As footah noted, at this point it's hard to tell whether that's a function of good taste or trendiness, but if trendiness and good taste happen to be one and the same, I'm all for trendy, myself. There should be more of that stuff out there! Other quick things: - -- Northeast fans of Ingrid Karklins will doubtless be as saddened as we were by the news that The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, CT was destroyed by fire last Saturday night. (TBT is, of course, the site of Ingrid's only CT appearances to date, and was a hopeful place for Happy to maybe do an acoustic set at some point... Dar Williams has also played there a few times. It 's an invaluable cultural resource in a town that despite the presence of a major small university that prides itself on its concentration on the arts, is conspicuously lacking in spaces for people to express themselves and enjoy the artistic expression of others. TBT will be back -- the rest of the May schedule has been cancelled, but a Middletown community theater (Oddfellows Playhouse) has donated the use of their space for the June and July schedule. Please see woj's home page (http://www.remus.rutgers.edu/~wojdex) for more info and a link to the TBT page with regular updates and information on how you can help bring the Buttonwood Tree back to life. For our part, woj and I will be donating a significant portion of the proceeds from our CD sale to the cause -- if we'd heard about the situation a couple of hours sooner, we would have just donated the CDs, but as it is I'm sure we have plenty of books to donate (TBT is also a used books and recording store). Which brings me to... - -- the response to our CD sale has been overwhelming!!! It's interesting to note that pretty much everybody wants the same things :} We're accommodating people as best we can, keeping in mind Digest lag, and will send individual replies to everyone listing what loot you've managed to score and the financial damage thereof soon, hopefully by Friday. And now it's for a good cause -- what more could you ask for? :> Hey, anybody interested in going to see Kat Devlin do her Kate Bush cover thing in NYC this Saturday? We'll be making reservations probably tomorrow, so get in touch with me or woj ASAP if you'd like to join us. It promises to be Surreal, with a capital R (incidentally, "Surreal" is what IM opened with last night -- ). While I'm being random, The Nields will be opening for 10,000 Maniacs somewhere in New Jersey on August 18. I'll post the tour schedule sometime. That one promises to be a great show! I also saw on the Dar Williams homepage that she's booked to open for Joan Baez at the Keswick in Glenside, PA sometime soon, as well -- if I lived closer that would be a good show, too. (I'll travel there for Sarah and Tori, but not for Dar... yet. ;) I'm done. I'll be more coherent next time, maybe. If there is a next time, at the rate I'm going... Flicking through TimeOut (London what's on guide) I spotted an ad for a rather interesting concert on Friday 2nd June at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden, North London. It will feature Heather Nova, Martin Stephenson, Boo Hewerdine and Ezio. All the artists will play a full-band set in the main room, and a solo acoustic set in the acoustic room. Heather will of course be familiar to many of the (mainly European) ecto-contingent, the others less so. I can heartily recommend Martin Stephenson, who I last saw briefly supporting the Indigo Girls last November. A great storytelling songwriter, some may remember him from his days with his band the Daintees. The other 2 artists on the bill I don't know anything about. The gig is a warm-up of sorts for the Phoenix Festival in the summer (July-ish I believe) at which (surprise, surprise) the above artists will be appearing, along with zillions more. Since I failed miserably to get tickets for Glastonbury, I'm seriously considering going to the Phoenix. Anyway, if anyone is in London, this concert at the Mean fiddler sounds well worth investigating. The club itself is a great place - serves just about the best Guiness in London! Not sure if I'll be able to make it myself, but if anyone is intending to go, let me know. I got "Blow" and "live from the Milky Way".... and can't wait to have everything she releases! (are any more available?)... I've been listening to these over and over! Also picked up Emily Bezar's "Grandmother's Tea Leaves" (Finally!), and I must say it is excellent. A little different from standard, but I knew that already, being a fan of her live performances... (as is our 6-year-old son). I had to order it special, and was glad I did. If you have a chance to see Emily live, by all means do so... she plays mostly the west coast, but that's good for me 'cuz thats where I am.... I had been meaning to pick up Sinead O'Connor's "Universal Mother" ever since I heard a negative review.... this guy was going on about how trite and hackneyed this "mother/goddes" stuff was, and I said, "well, if it can push this jerk's buttons so hard, it must be excellent..." and I wasn't too far off. It is a bit intense emotionally for some moods, but that's ok (being a fan of Lisa Germano and Patti Smith, Heather Nova and PJ Harvey, well... intensity is often a *good* thing....). She really is moving on this one... it's sometimes disturbing, but this is really great stuff. I also got "Rhodes II", finally, and so now I think I have *almost* everything by Happy, except "ecto"! My budget is now on hold... For people who like stuff with rougher edges, try "Dog Faced Hermans", I've only got one of theirs, but I plan to get more. "those deep buds" is the CD I have, and it has tracks entitled "Blessed are the Follies", "Volkswagen", "Keep your laws off my body", "Lie and Swell", "H Tribe", "Human Spark", "Les Femmes Et Les Filles Vont Danser", "Virginia Fur" <--great song, "Calley", and "Dream Forever". I really like the cover art... a psychedelic sea anemone theme! I've been dragging Lush's "Spooky" out a lot lately, cuz its so mellow, and was wondering if I should get anything else of theirs, as I've heard them mentioned here lately. #ecto on IRC has been slow, but I've been hanging out there a little lately, under the name of BlueFire (which is my name on the mush, too, but I still haven't been there too often!) I've just discovered IRC this year, and have to try not to go there *too* often!
