The tracks are co-written, produced, mixed and recorded by no-one else but William Orbit. Caroline sings and plays cello, William Orbit plays keyboards and several other instruments. The album is rather quiet and reminds me very much of FTE. So if you like William Orbit and Sarah McLachlan you WILL like Caroline Lavelle :-) (BTW, in the credits she thanks "Peter Gabriel and all at WOMAD and Real World). I found Heather Nova's live album "Heather". It was only half the price of a normal CD and the clerk said it was a bootleg. The sound quality is good albeit in mono. It seems to be a German pressing because there's the line "Alle Urheberrechte...." printed on the CD. Could someone give me the track listing of the US version? Maybe it's the same. Praise the scanner cash desks! I bought three CDs and only payed for two because the scanner didn't register one of the bar codes and the cashier didn't notice it (she was talking to a friend all the time :-) What I bought was Clannad - Macalla (very very good) Joni Mitchell - Dog Eat Dog (very very good) and Robbie Robertson - Robbie Robertson (very good) Regards, - -- Dirk ______D.Kastens@rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE______ ------------------------------ From: "Matt Bittner" Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 12:33:46 +0000 Subject: Wall of Voodoo... Believe it when they say poor-behaving. I have had to re-load Windows so many times in one day, it's not funny. I'm working in a development environment called PowerBuilder, and it is a poor-behaving Windows application. So, when you put a poor-behaving Windows app on top of a poor-behaving DOS app - well you can guess the net result. And as far as your network message goes (I've seen this - Novell, right?), well - believe it or not - there are times when programs just don't know what has happened. So, the best message you'll get is what you have seen. Sure, it's not the best, but at least you can tell it's the network. I have gotten a few "Error"s before. That's it. No other verbage, nothing telling me what went wrong, just "Error". Then, you could also get the wonderful Windows' "GPF", or "General Protection Fault", which - at least from a programmer's point of view - you get an offending address (xxx:xxx). Sure, not great from a user's point of view, but the programmer(s) just didn't take into account all possible errors. There's the key. It's not the computer's fault, it's us damn programmers. Well, at least some of them...:-) Onto music: I've been listening to PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love", and like it. It's very "different" and "harsh". Yea, yea, not very descriptive, but how else can you describe PJ? So far, my number 3 purchase of the year. If you want an "alternative" sound to what's currently available, get it. And you can tell Flood's involvement. A local club is trying to get either Veruca Salt, or PJ. Think I'll go over there and tell them "PJ or death!!". Veruca Salt is just - well - Veruca Salt. PJ IS! Although the whole thing is great, my favorite cut is the title song. Quite "unusual". The latest copy of "Request" had an interview with PJ, and she mentioned that she made twice as many songs as were required for the disc. She was then asked about how/when the other 10 songs would be released, and she mentioned possibly as singles. Yes, Adam and the Ants currently on the radio. Great pop from the '80's. Before that was "Mexican Radio" by - oh whatever that group is. Although some might differ, the '80's produced some great music. Due to Amy's extremely well-honed ability to engage the band-members in conversation, we all went backstage at the metro to their "green room" cell where there was lots of free stuff. Nancy scolded me for wanting to take a banana from their collection of fresh-fruit. Ah well, at we got some beer and very cold water out of it. And we got to speak to the Serrentino siblings about their craft and their tour supporting wolfgang press, which we did not stay for. And I signed up on the mailing and bought ($10) their spinART s/t debut which I had up to that point not been able to find. I also managed to confuse S,T! with B.E.T.T.Y. (sorry, those periods are not punctuation, and neither are the ones in U.K. or R.E.M.), insisting that they had just been in Chicago last month! :-) I like the new album (we get there when we do) (A&M) a tremendous amount and would highly recommend it. Unfortunately, metro is not a great venue for them. Amy and I insisted they must come back alone and play at Schuba's. The best songs on wgtwwd, imo, are the ones where beth plays and sings unaccompanied, e.g. River Run ("that river song" :-) :-). Apparently she shies away from performing these, esp. in club settings, which is why schuba's would be more acoustic-flavor friendly. S,T! hail from IM's hometown, Lancaster, PA. Amy tells me LIVE is from there too. (yay) But unlike IM, Jay and Beth are brother/sister, not married like Don and Karen (Kerin?). So go see these guys if you can. - -mjm [Ironically, while we were in the dressing room, each of Beth and Jay talked to us a bit and left saying they had to help clean up. So Amy and Nancy and I were left alone in there for quite a while. When we finally decided to leave, we came upon *all* 3 band members sitting on the steps just outside the dressing room, just hanging out doing nothing -- so I guess they just wanted to be alone or something -- but it was pretty funny that we were hanging in the dressing room waiting for them to finish packing up and they were just doing nothing on the stairs in front. I could just see the conversation, "are those dumb-brain fans gone yet?" "Naw they're still in there drinking our beer and eating our peanuts." "Man, there's no escape, ay? Why can't they just leave us alone?" "Hey, let's just hang out here till they leave." Ooh, ooh, ooh! A question I can answer coming from the great, knowledgeable one, Mr. Mike Mendelson. No doubt you've heard They Don't Know -- Tracey Ullman (yes, the one who had a variety show on Fox and is the most hysterically funny person this side of Monty Python) covered it, and it was a big hit around the world, including the U.S. The video had Paul McCartney in it as her romance stud. It can be found on the (not in print) album, "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places", or on "Forever," the Tracey Ullman greatest hits album. I'm not sure if the latter is available domestically. I believe Kirsty wrote They Don't Know for Tracey, but then recorded it herself. I wish Tracey would continue to make music -- her two albums (only one released in the US) were filled with hysterically funny parodies of '50s bubble-gum pop. All of the songs listed in your miniLP are on Galore, but Galore contains a wealth of other great stuff, including (I believe), There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. In fact, if you don't have a copy of this song, run out NOW to the record store and buy it. It's an all-time classic. ==> Valerie ------------------------------ From: brage@sphere.home.id.dtu.dk (Jens P. Brage) Date: Mon, 22 May 95 23:31:45 MET Subject: Sophie B. Hawkins' European Tour Hi, I went to see Sophie B. Hawkins' concert in Copenhagen tonight, and while she may be a bit more mainstream than the average ecto fare, it was definitely worthwhile... SBH was great, going from soft ballad-like intros to full-bore rock yelling in several of the songs. Once the sound engineer got the mix right, her voice stood nice and strongly in the middle of the soundscape. Despite a very tight tour schedule, she was also extremely energetic on stage, and rather, uhmm, explicit... ;-) The main set was about 1 hour and 25 minutes, and then there was a two-song encore, ending in a great cover of Dylan's "I Want You" - very nice! I think the main set opened with "Mysteries We Understand", a nice rocky song to get the audience going, and ended with "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover". With the possible exception of "Live and Let Love", she sang every song from "Tongues and Tails", and about four or five other songs I didn't recognize (and which I assume are from the newer album). The band (keyboards/backing vocals, bass (electric and acoustic), guitar (mainly electric), and drums/percussion) was also pretty good, and looked like they had fun. My only complaint was in fact the sound engineer, who botched the first two songs, and the first song of the encore, before getting the mix right... I noted down these other concert dates: Frankfurt May 25 Munich May 27 Cologne June 2 Birmingham June 4 London June 5 The remaining dates were all in Italy, and I don't think we've got any Italian members...
