Go figure. I saw Jewel on Friday night in Seattle with Jim Gurley, Doug Burks, and Janis Horne (my non-ecto spousal unit). We sat right in front of her on the floor and I noticed that there is a crack in the top of her guitar, running from the bridge straight down to the bottom edge. Here's a picture of the bottom portion of the guitar. Soon after she was signed, Atlantic gave her enough of an advance so that she could actually get an apartment, with extra spending money to boot. She was so excited that she ran out to this guitar company to look at guitars. They had one with a tiny flaw in the finish, which resulted in it being dramatically cheaper. She was really psyched about this, and brought it up repeatedly for a number of weeks. The flaw, at least at the time, was pretty insignificant. I don't know if it's gotten worse recently. Hell, I don't even know if I'm talking about the same guitar, as I don't usually pay much attention to musicians instruments. I had actually never heard of the Chieftains until this February, when a good friend of mine urged me to get a copy of their most recent album, _The Long Black Veil_. Although I'm not sure I'd call it ecto-ish music (although, I suppose if you stretched it . . . . ), I really like the album. It's almost a collection of Irish folk tunes (almost, since Van Morrison does guest vocals on _Have I Told You Lately That I Love You ;-) ) with guest vocals from Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones, and Mick Jagger/the Rolling Stones. It sounds strange, I know . . . . but it's proven to be a *wonderful* album to sip a cup of tea on a rainy day to. It's not you at all. The MUSH has been having problems off and on for the past few weeks. Some have to do with crackers messing with it, some are technical problems with new programs installed (mainly to defeat the crackers) and sometimes it's just plain wankiness. I have the CD, only listened to it a couple of times. I just bought it this weekend after hearing 4 or 5 songs in a rocord store while shopping for something else. I personally wouldn't call it outstanding, but so far I've found it interesting and at least solid, and I think it could still grow on me more. I also think some on this group would really like it. She has a sweet voice, the CD is mid-tempo and moody, with extensive vocal harmony, keyboards and drum machine a la Sarah McLachlan. The songs on the album are all originals with the exception of a very good cover of the Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." It looks like she's from England, petite and really cute. I'd probably check out the show if she played a record store in my area. - ------------------------------- DAN STARK dstark@freenet.niagara.com St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada ------------------------------ From: fleur@iglou.com (Joanna Phillips) Date: Wed, 17 May 1995 09:58:38 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Joan Baez Tour Dates Here are Joan Baez's tour dates, as posted on rec.music.folk: > 6/23 Fulda Germany > 6/24 Werneck Germany > 6/25 Gallen Switzerland > 6/27 Linz Austria > 6/28 Graz Austria > 6/30 Basel Switzerland > 7/1 Tambach, Germany > 7/2 Northeim Germany > 7/6 Bayreuth Germany > 7/7 Augustusburg Germany > 7/8 Kamenz Germany > 7/10 Fougeres, France > 7/11 Caen, France > 7/13 Brest France > 7/15 Vittel France > 7/16 Regensburg, Germany > 8/6 Ben and Jerry's Folk Festival Newport, RI > 8/9 Keswick Theater Glenside, PA > 8/10 Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE > 8/12 Snug Harbor Cultural Center New York, NY > 8/19 Art Park Lewiston, NY > 8/20 Cuyahoga Valley Heritage Fest. WRT Amy's query on the music of spring: I forgot to speak of this topic yesterday because I ducked out early to catch the final afternoon of a large art fair downtown. As I was pondering the question enroute there, the only examples that popped into my head were a forgettable cover of the old standard "It Might As Well Be Spring" that I heard in the dentist's waiting room many years ago, and the fact that _World News Now_ once played Chad and Jeremy's "A Summer Song" under the sports crawl--possibly appropriate since spring is getting such a late start this year, one wonders how much ofit there can be before the seasons change again :-). At the art fair, appropriately, there was a photo of a lamp post in a heavy snow, titled "First Day of Spring" or something to that effect. Today, it occurred to me that Stravinsky's "Rites of Spring" would also have a rational nexus. Happy birthday to _Brown v. Board of Education_. (on the Late Show) Hello everyone!! The Late Show with Letterman in London on the 17th of May featured the Chieftains, Van Morrison, and Sinead O'Connor as the guest musicians. They performed the Rod Stewart song, "Have I told you lately that I love you." The Chieftains, as always, are an amazing bunch of musicians whose talents shine in pristine perfection from the very first note. Their traditional Irish sound was captured perfectly in their rendition of the Rod Stewart song. However, there was a huge discrepancy in the vocal part of the performance. Sinead O'Connor and Van Morrison sang a duet that didn't quite work. The discordance may be attributed to their rather different stage presences: Sinead is timid, but warm, and very sincere. Van Morrison, on the other hand, is jesterly, crude, and domineering (and totally unsuited to sing an emotional love song). Van was more of a comical buffoon than anything else. On a final note about the collective musicians, the song reached new depths of musical complexity with the Chieftains and Sinead, but could have been better had they utilized a maturer male vocalist. I haven't had the opportunity to listen to Sinead's latest albums, but in comparison to her first couple, her subtle Irish tone seems to be fading, replaced by a less unique but much richer sound. Sinead has a new look... Try to imagine her with the same kind of a hairstyle as the one Winnona Ryder had for the movie, "Reality Bites." That's about the best approximation I can give... Well, that's my impression of the five minute set on the Late Show... tomorrow night, Annie Lennox is slotted to perform. Happy hunting!
