On 3 May, John Shepard wrote: > Does the context of a song, i. e. its place on an album, any > DJ chatter before/after it, any radio static during it, > scratches on a record, etc. change the song or merely the > presentation of it? Several years ago I used to tape music from medium wave radio broadcasts. Especially at nighttime you would hear other stations throught the broadcast. So, once I recorded Tim Buckley's "Love from Room 109 at the Islander (on Pacific Coast Highway)" (from his Happy Sad album). That song is soooo beautiful... Somewhere in the middle of it is a very lonely bit with cello and sea sounds, and through that medium wave radio broadcast of it came some out-of-space talking in a foreign language. This made the song even lonelier than it already was... And still, every time I play that song, I hear that talking over the lonely bit in the middle... I guess it doesn't really change the song, merely intensifies the lonely atmosphere. Anyway, what I really wanted to tell you all is that today, 9 May, it's exactly one year ago that Marcel first played me RhodeSongs... I still remember the first time I heard "Feed the Fire" as if it was yesterday; I've been hooked ever since. One year of Happy-ness! :-) I've been away on holiday for a week, walking and (zen) meditating in France with a group of 7 women and 1 man. We didn't listen to music very much, but the couple of times we did we listened to Enya. After five days we'd gotten a bit bored with her, so somebody said, "Don't we have anything else?" I asked them if they liked Kate Bush, and when they said yes, I got the Happy tape I'd compiled for myself and played them RhodeSongs. They were impressed, even though they only really listened to "Feed the Fire" before the talking continued and the volume was turned down again. "So many powerful beings"... Does anybody know if Happy is into meditation in any way? (Just wondering.) There are so many things that I wanted to write about, but I just can't find the time. I've bought loads of CD's recently, and listened to even more, but I'm afraid any reviews will have to wait till I'm retired or something. :) Some titles that jump into my mind at the moment: Margot Smith (Sleeping with the Lion - thanks Chris!), Paula Cole (Harbinger), Varttina, Maire Brennan, Marianne Faithful, There's more... Beyond Words (with a.o. Jann Arden, The Innocence Mission and Jan Johnston - does anybody know anything about her?), Loreena McKennitt, Sarah McLachlan (Freedom Sessions), Altan, and more more more... Maybe later. I think I'll leave it there. This post includes the list of tapes added since I last posted, followed in turn by the full contents listings of those tapes. Please note that the Happy Rhodes tapes listed at the end are a bit messily split between tapes, thanks to an awkwardly timed 108min Middle East concert. Also note that two of those tapes have much blank space left which will be filled in the future by other Happy Rhodes interviews and concerts (assuming Ectophiles keep submitting them! (hint, hint)). Read the notes carefully before ordering! In case you're wondering what I blabbering about, the full FAQ for the tape dubbing project should be found in close electronic proximity to this post. The list includes a lot of Happy Rhodes interviews, concerts, etc., plus a wide (amazingly wide) range of Ecto artists. The included listing gives a short description of each tape. If you want the full content listing for any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tape comes complete with a full cassette label. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I will fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.23 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.36 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $1.01 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks 2223 NW 59th St #2 Seattle WA 98107 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Who can take advantage of the tape dubbing project? Any and all Ectophiles can place an order, but only Ectophiles are eligible. However, Ectophiles can place orders for friends. Please do not spread word of this outside the Ecto mailing list. This is not meant as elitism, simply a practically matter of keeping orders at a manageable level. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I will be happy to add it. I have a loose policy of giving two free tapes from the project for every single tape submitted. However, please restrict yourself to contributing tapes which are either significantly different or of better sound quality than what already is in the project. For one example, the five tapes of Tori Amos' 1992 concerts are two or three too many. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
