I hadn't heard about that one, but for the most part trying to see IM seems to be a really frustrating undertaking, with shows that too often seem to be changed/cancelled/postponed. Also there's the fact that it hard to get an accurate list of dates from either IM or their management. Anyway, the list of tour dates being tossed around on the IM mailing list didn't have the date at Jerky's, but did include a 5/13 date in Providence... at the Met Cafe I think. And also a 5/12 date in Boston at the Ludlow Street Cafe. Can anyone local to either of those dates actually confirm them? Neal C, and others, I agree wholeheartedly that music can encompass "random" sound. I used to teach an electronic music class to kids aged 12-17. The first class, I told them my definition of music: "Anything that manipulates time and causes any mental or emotional reaction in a person". (This suggests that music does not have to contain sound - it can be anything, a thought or a painting or an experience, that effects the way the concept of "time" is experienced. Example - when you're remembering a song, there is no sound involved, yet it is still music.) I told them that accepting this broad but accurate definition was the first key to understanding and appreciating electronic and modern music. By making this definition one of my beliefs, I too can enjoy everyday random noises and non-sounds as music. oh, a Twinkie(tm) is a spongy pseudo-cream-filled confection. I would have to say that I never have been able to see a Twinkie as music, although I'll keep trying. Ecto fuzz: If anyone here has heard Lori Carson's new CD, please tell me what you think of it. I've never heard of her before; > what's her stuff sound like? Max's version is a big, loud, anthemic pop song. She was an acquired taste. That particular song was quite anthemic with gospel overtones, partly because she was backed up by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, a large r&b/gospel group who are a long way from Melanie's regular sound. (She never used her last name on her albums.) Her voice was something between a screech and Janis Ian. She target Pop as opposed to Protest or Folk; the album "Candles in the Rain" was released 3/70. The alternative press (which included Rolling Stone, then) just hated everything she did. In terms of positioning her in the female singer/songwriter (she did write some of her songs) pantheon now it would be very hard to say. Not as teenybopper as Tiffany but targeting the then-equivalent of that market; not a lightweight yet talented (imho) pop singer like Kylie Minogue or Sheryl Crow; too quirky and original for that. I give up. Someone else who also liked Melanie help out, please! Anthony, yes, please pick up a copy of Max's cd for me when you can. Yes indeedily doo, Innocence Mission played to a full house (maybe 100 or 150 people, if that). They drew on material from their debut album, from Umbrella, and from their imminent release (June 6) Glow. The sound and the mix were just astoundingly good. Even for Schubas, this was incredible. The vocals came through lucid and straight and loud -- like they should be, at the top of the mix. The guitars were ambient and pingy and mellifluous and sharp and bright. The drums were loud and beaty. What can I say. I love Karen Peris' voice so much. She is a cross between Victoria Williams and Sam Phillips -- a puritan, shy, smiley, self-effacing, quiet exuberance who says hardly a word but expresses completely through her songs and her disposition. I was able to talk to her and her husband briefly after the show. Apparently, Glow has been ready for release for at least 6 months. As the drummer said, it's been delayed for only one reason: Sheryl Crow. I guess because they are **sooo** much alike (**not**) A&M couldn't concentrate their energies on both at once. I suppose the upside is that they do plan to push IM, presumably more than their last 2 releases. The drummer said they are on a little tour -- tomorrow they swing into Grand Rapids and then Detroit and some gigs in Ohio and back home to Lancaster, PA. Then they will start a full-fledged tour with the June 6 release of Glow. It is really the most remarkable thing to me how a band like this can carve out its own little musical niche. They have definite elements of Cocteau Twins-like ambience, mixed with dreamy writing and a definite religious bent (I seem to recall that they started as an inspirational group -- is this right?). They are also similar to bands like Lush, though a bit less harsh. The songwriting is, I think, their strongest point. It's just right in there, completely different from everyone else. They played covers of Toad the Wet Sprocket and Joni Mitchell (Clouds). This gave the listener insight into how they develop their sound and style from a relatively straightforward melody. They were selling copies of their new single for $5 at the show. Here's the track listing: Innocence Mission Bright as Yellow (CD5) (1995) 4 Tracks 12:34 Bright as Yellow* 03:33 Let's Talk About Something Else 03:15 That Was Another Country* 04:18 Geranium 01:27 - - ------ *taken from Glow I assume this is now in distribution. Karen played acoustic/rhythm guitar for most songs while Don played lead electric. Karen also played piano for a few songs. Hilights for me included Clear to You (my very favorite IM song), Beginning the World, Wonder of Birds (probably my 2nd favorite 2 songs), Surreal and really many others. I would have liked to hear Broken Circle, but hey, what can you do. :-) I was elated to see fellow longtime ectophile, Val Nozick, who was dutifully saving Nancy and me seats without really knowing it (!). Val is doing great back in the city that she loves (!) and working at a total dream job. Great to have you back here, Valerie! (It was amazing to me that Val said she'd only ever been to *one* concert in Chicago the whole time she was here... she'd never been to Schuba's before, never been to the Park West, etc. Talk about poor timing and luck. Anyways, she recognized the inherent goodness of Schuba's almost immediately.) So that's the scoop, guys. Another hallmark moment for your ol' palindrome man. Ahhh, life is good.
