Yes indeedily doo, Innocence Mission played to a full house (maybe 100 or 150 people, if that). They drew on material from their debut album, from Umbrella, and from their imminent release (June 6) Glow. The sound and the mix were just astoundingly good. Even for Schubas, this was incredible. The vocals came through lucid and straight and loud -- like they should be, at the top of the mix. The guitars were ambient and pingy and mellifluous and sharp and bright. The drums were loud and beaty. What can I say. I love Karen Peris' voice so much. She is a cross between Victoria Williams and Sam Phillips -- a puritan, shy, smiley, self-effacing, quiet exuberance who says hardly a word but expresses completely through her songs and her disposition. I was able to talk to her and her husband briefly after the show. Apparently, Glow has been ready for release for at least 6 months. As the drummer said, it's been delayed for only one reason: Sheryl Crow. I guess because they are **sooo** much alike (**not**) A&M couldn't concentrate their energies on both at once. I suppose the upside is that they do plan to push IM, presumably more than their last 2 releases. The drummer said they are on a little tour -- tomorrow they swing into Grand Rapids and then Detroit and some gigs in Ohio and back home to Lancaster, PA. Then they will start a full-fledged tour with the June 6 release of Glow. It is really the most remarkable thing to me how a band like this can carve out its own little musical niche. They have definite elements of Cocteau Twins-like ambience, mixed with dreamy writing and a definite religious bent (I seem to recall that they started as an inspirational group -- is this right?). They are also similar to bands like Lush, though a bit less harsh. The songwriting is, I think, their strongest point. It's just right in there, completely different from everyone else. They played covers of Toad the Wet Sprocket and Joni Mitchell (Clouds). This gave the listener insight into how they develop their sound and style from a relatively straightforward melody. They were selling copies of their new single for $5 at the show. Here's the track listing: Innocence Mission Bright as Yellow (CD5) (1995) 4 Tracks 12:34 Bright as Yellow* 03:33 Let's Talk About Something Else 03:15 That Was Another Country* 04:18 Geranium 01:27 - ------ *taken from Glow I assume this is now in distribution. Karen played acoustic/rhythm guitar for most songs while Don played lead electric. Karen also played piano for a few songs. Hilights for me included Clear to You (my very favorite IM song), Beginning the World, Wonder of Birds (probably my 2nd favorite 2 songs), Surreal and really many others. I would have liked to hear Broken Circle, but hey, what can you do. :-) I was elated to see fellow longtime ectophile, Val Nozick, who was dutifully saving Nancy and me seats without really knowing it (!). Val is doing great back in the city that she loves (!) and working at a total dream job. Great to have you back here, Valerie! (It was amazing to me that Val said she'd only ever been to *one* concert in Chicago the whole time she was here... she'd never been to Schuba's before, never been to the Park West, etc. Talk about poor timing and luck. Anyways, she recognized the inherent goodness of Schuba's almost immediately.) So that's the scoop, guys. Another hallmark moment for your ol' palindrome man. Ahhh, life is good. Listen Up! has *3* (count'em) gigs this Sunday. And I was still able to squeeze in seeing these shows. I feel so decadent. Amy, Vickie, anyone else in the windy apple, y'missed a good one... For those who haven't yet visited the EctoMUSH, or haven't been there for a long time, there are a few of us who have been doing a flurry of building to make the place a true "EctoLand" :-) The Gift Shop (actually named Happy's Gift Shop) is part of the Happy Rhodes Mini-Mall, which includes (so far): Happy's Monster Art Gallery (still needs a lot of work) Happy's Spatulas (she used to work in a housewares store) Happy's Italian Restaurant (she worked as a waitress in one when I first "met" her in 1988. Omar is the waiter!) Happy's Gift Shop (she worked in one in 1988-9. That's just the tip of the iceberg, of what's available and what soon will be available. I'm having more fun than I ever realized I would. It fun building ecto-ish rooms and objects, for myself and for other people to have fun with too. Check it out...and if things look bare or disorganized, keep in mind this move that Jason is talking about. We'll get it all together. I've never heard of her before; what's her stuff sound like? Max's version is a big, loud, anthemic pop song. > early albums, and I guess she made an impression on Max Sharam too, > motivating her cover of "Lay Down." Does she sound anything like Melanie? :) No idea. I'm interviewing Max again this Monday, so I will ask her about Melanie. > Will this album be available via net.sales or official US release? Well, I can grab you a copy. US release is going to happen on this album, though; probably late this year, or early 1996. EastWest have been pursuing their international bretheren about getting it out, but nothing firm's been said yet. Once again, I'll ask Max and see if she has an idea. The CD, by the way, has this year's best cover art yet (and this is a worldwide contest, folks :-). Also, eariler someone mentioned that they thought Max's track "Is It OK?" was a cover version, to which I oh-so-knowledgably replied that it was not. Well, as The Fonz would say, I was wr... I was wr.... I was wrrrrr.... :) The song's credited on the album to one Paul McCrane. Any takers? Sorry 'bout that - there is so writing credit for that song on the Coma EP, and listening back to last November's interview, Max talked about the song as if she had written it... (blush). And finally - I think I've mentioned Merril Bainbridge before, when she released her fabulous slice'o'pop single 'Mouth" last year. Well, Merril's now Number 7 on the national singles charts with the song, which got a re-release in February this year. Methinks the Australian public is having a mass outbreak of good taste... :) I've heard Merril's forthcoming album, which has just been titled "The Garden", and you peoples are going to *love* it, trust me. Merril's next single and eventual album release also marks my debut as a record company bio author...! Also coming on Monday week is the new album by Melbourne singer/songwriter Kerri Simpson, which is also superb. More on this when I have more time... Aaaaannnnd finally; my housemate Tony, who is one half of a New Order-ish electronic band called About Six Feet, who in turn put out a rather good EP-CD last year called "Plunge" which I produced (for a recommendation, mail Henry Frayne of The Moon Seven Times and ask him what he thinks!), wrote a song in a very 60s-girl-pop style, called "Tingly", which he has recorded for a coming compilation. Well, we were originally planning to get Wendy Rule in to sing it, but she was too busy on her own record and didn't feel the song suited her range. So we were sitting around fretting over who we'd get to sing the thing, when I jokingly suggested we draft Frente!'s Angie Hart in, as she'd suit the song perfectly. Tony, of course, set me the task of finding her. So I tracked down her phone number, Tony rang her up, she said she'd love to do it, and do it she did. The song sounds great, and Angie's voice is a power of ten better than it is on "Marvin The Album", which is to say that what was lovely is now even lovlier. :) Tony sent a DAT of the song to JJJ-FM, our national "youth" radio station, who were going to play it on their Australian music show until things happened - White Records, the label to whom Angie and Frente! are signed here, saw a blurb about the song in Beat Magazine, rang me up, and got the lawyers in. :-) The problem was that no-one had thought to tell Frente!'s manager (who is based in New York) about Angie having recorded the song. Anyway, we're hoping to clear it all up and get the song out as a single, possibly even through White themselves. I'll keep you posted. - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au Physical mail: P.O.
