Okay guys - I agree already! While there are always WORSE things one can use to pollute one's body - you're right - cigarettes can destroy a once wonderful voice. Good point about Joni Mitchell - her voice IS trashed. I have a friend who is on her way down the lung-cancer road - and at 30 she has a voice that sometimes resembles Lauren Bacall's (she smokes about 2 packs a day). I don't think Kate's voice is as bad - but luck or something else must be smiling on her for the time being because - I would think Kate smokes English cigs - which can be unfiltered or just as bad as a certain brand known as "reds". Those are seven zillion times worse for your voice (and lungs) than the "ultra light" cigs that many American women (I know) smoke nowdays. Let's all hope that Happy is (if she has indeed picked it up as a "habit") smoking low tar cigs and not all that often. If she has quit before - she can quit again, and if my intuition about her has any truth to it - she WILL quit if it begins to affect her vocal range, her energy level, or if she simply decides that she no longer wants to (smoke). She strikes me as being a very determined human being and would not become a slave to the nicotine monkey (who knows - she might have just "bummed" one from someone backstage and we're worrying over nothing!) I once again feel bad about my own nicotine usage - and will probably quit (again) soon. Thanks guys! Linda's a friend of mine, and really cool to boot. She got signed to Son of Berzerkley Records (or SOB for short) about two years ago, and the eponymous album came out last spring. I was personally a little disappointed in it, mainly because the arrangements are kind of bland (through no fault of Linda's; SOB head Matthew King Kaufman was the producer and called all the shots). She's since scrapped her band (which were basically the remnants of the Greg Kihn Band :P ), got a new one, and is in the studio now putting together her second album, which she is having more control of. In fact, Em and I had coffee with Linda and another local songstress, Dianne Nola (who I'm sure you'll be hearing about more later) last weekend. She was still jazzed from the night before when she got to meet one of her idols, Graham Parker. Anyway, I'll post something here if and when Linda's next release is imminent. Tix are $25. I recenlty saw them in DC, and thought there were phenomenal (despite my previous, and continued, luke-warm feelings about the Noa album). I thought they were amazing enough that I am giving some thought to going again. I'll go out on a limb here and offer to buy discs for people if there is interest (that is, assuming I go and assuming there are discs). At the DC show, they had both of her Israeli discs and the American self-titled one (that I'm not impressed with, but others love). All of these discs were $20 (US), plus whatever the cost of postage and packaging to get it to you (probably about $2). Unless Happy wants to end up sounding like Ute Lemper, she'd >better quit smoking soon. > >D^2 > Some time ago, I asked an acquaintance of mine (she's a third-year med. student) to explain to me the effects of smoking on the lungs. While I can't remember the sordid details, it was enough to make me glad I've never felt inclined to even try it, despite occasional attacks of peer pressure to the contrary. Anyway, my question was prompted be my very frequent observation of musicians smoking. I've always wondered why they do it (epecially singers). I can't imagine that it helps their singing. Now that I've heard some of the consequences to the lungs, I wonder even more. What's up with that? Although I'm sure there's plenty of exceptions, why do so many musicians smoke? Is there some kind of pressure within the industry or something? Is it some kind of symbol of group inclusion? Amy said she enjoyed it occasionally. My mother says the basically the same. I can certainly accept that, but even so, I know far more smokers who want to quit than not. It seems Happy was a smoker in the past and then gave it up. Anyone know why? To some of us, particularly the radical anti-smoking type, it might seem obvious. But my father (who enjoyed it) quit a long time ago simply because it was too expensive. Lest this post be perceived as a soapbox diatribe, and I be labled a "radical" (well, I am sort of, but for non-moral reasons), I guess I should say I've nothing against smokers personally. I also sympathize with them WRT their banishment from an ever-growing number of public and private buildings. Also, most of us do things that we enjoy which, nevertheless, risk life and limb. Hangliding, mountain climbing (I hope to somday), reckless mountain-biking (I'm guilty), and various other things come to mind. I guess I have no moral high-ground to condemn smoking. But I certainly have a practical reason to vehemenently dislike it. Basically, being exposed to smoke exacerbates my sinus problem in the extreme (major headaches), and to be quite honest, it just plain smells awful IMHO. The unfortunate consequence of all this, from a personal perspective, is that I find it difficult to form decent friendships with smokers. I'm aquainted with many, but it's hard to spend a lot of time with one who, ultimately gives me a headache. Even if they're nice enough to refrain, it is an inconvenience to them (especially if they're addicted), so they leave. Maybe chatting on-line can help in this regard. Also, every time I've gone to an indoor concert (except Victoria Williams), I've had to endure headaches. Oh well. I just taped "The Life of Brian" last night so..."life's a piece of shit, when you think of it..." Well, it is sometimes at any rate, and I do try to maintain the attitude of the singer of that song- "Always look on the bright side of life...(whistle, whistle") :> . I must admit, headaches won't keep me from a good concert! The last thing WRT this smoking thing, (finally!) I guess I should note that one brief observation of Happy smoking, may not necessarily mean that she's taken up the *habit* again. Who knows? Maybe she just relapsed into a sort of "social smoking" mode. Whatever that is. - - Rob ------------------------------ From: "Wolfgang T. Not me. I'm not radical in my actions, but perhaps my beliefs (and this is something that I've brought up on ecto). I find smoking to be personally offensive; I've got rather unpleasant asthma, and it's pretty insulting to see people throw away their lungs and basically make themselves suffer many of the same effects that I suffer through no fault of my own. >I alsosympathize with them >WRT their banishment from an ever-growing number of public and private >buildings. Hangliding, mountain climbing (I hope to somday), >reckless mountain-biking (I'm guilty), and various other things come to >mind. No comparison. These activities are all calculated risk. It's possible to participate in any of these activities without ever suffering any negative impact. Well, okay, your qualifier of "reckless" mountain biking may not be calculated. But the dangerousness of mountain biking is more related to skill and common sense on your bike than anything else. I've done some off-road biking myself, and while there's always a chance of eating dirt, I'm pretty confident of my ability to ensure that that doesn't happen. Further most of these activities have positive health benefits which for the most part outweigh the possible costs involved in an accident. Each cigarette, on the other hand, does damage to your body. There's no consideration of "This cigarette might or might not hurt me, but what the hell." It's more like, "I don't care if smoking shaves 5 years off my life; I like it." Never mind the second-hand smoke issue. I won't deny somebody's personal decision to smoke. But I see no reason why I should make it easy for them. Rod said on at least a couple of occasions that he intended to write to the list about it, but he never got around to doing so. I don't have a precise date, but I think it was early January of 1994 that it happened (funny how time flies...) which is doubtless why my memory is a bit fuzzy regarding the specific details; but with the help of Suzanne and Steve (and a few bits and pieces on my net account which I managed to track down) I've got the basics written down... Rod Bourland (Revvie), Suzanne Weiss (dreaming), Steve Lamb (Rava), and myself (Fili) were on the #ecto IRC channel. I can't remember what we were talking about, but Rod suddenly told us that he thought he'd overdosed on his medication. He was logged on from home via his modem, and so we told him to log off immediately and could call 911 for help, but he said that he'd already done so. How quickly things happened I don't recall, but as we waited for Rod to tell us that the medics had arrived and everything was going to be okay, he gradually lost proper control over his typing and became less and less coherent... All we could do was try to keep him reading and typing to prevent him from falling asleep, as he was getting drowsy. So we told him to keep talking to us, and when he was no longer able to type proper words and sentences we said to just type anything at all... It seemed to go on for ages, with random characters from Rod appearing on the screen, and us encouraging him to keep going. Eventually, Rod managed to say that he thought the medics had arrived, and a few moments later one of them went to the keyboard and told us that they had got to him okay. Then Revvie disappeared from the channel - presumably Rod's computer & modem were switched off before he was taken for treatment by the medics - and we were left feeling very shaken up, and hoping that he was going to be alright... A couple of days later I saw Rod back on IRC, and he told me that he was feeling better that day. He said that we'd saved his life by keeping him awake until the medics got to him. It turned out that he'd suffered a bad reaction to having two different medications mixed that shouldn't have been, and he'd even started hallucinating :/ (To make things worse he'd fallen off the stretcher, and gotten concussion, as well as throwing his back out!)-: Well that's what happened, as far as we can recall. There are a couple of things to add, however. The following words are from Steve: > What I will always remember Revvie for is the Tori Amos tape he sent > me.
