Well, I'm glad I was able to pass on some news to you all--too bad I had it wrong! Before you all deflate, Happy *will* be on WPKN, but it will be on Friday the 19th, not Thursday the 18th. I'll still be out of town unfortunate- ly, but I'm sure this is a better night for Meth and woj to get their butts over there! According to my roommate, she will be on some time around 8:45. About Sally Oldfield--she sings on a beautiful song from Steve Hackett's "Voyage Of The Acolyte" album. Let's see.... what's the name of the song?.... I think it's "Shadow Of The Hierophant". Anyway, it's really great. About Rennaissance--I bought their "Ashes Are Burning" album domestically. It's on One-Way Records. I'm pretty sure I've seen one of their others that wasn't an import, but I can't remember which one. Well, that's all. If I hear anything else about the PKN thing, I'll let y'all know! BUT i have heard reports and have boots (and am looking for more....please email me if you have any!) and liz sounded fine if not excellent in the concerts i have on tape. i find the studio version of some of her songs boring in comparison to her engergetic renditions on stage. especially her song whip-smart. her acoustic performance of support system is excellent as well. liz got thrusted into the spotlight after exile, much to her own chagrin. she never expected to garner so much press or so much publicity. she hated it, and the "fame" that she received did not help her in her stage performance. live she does not have the personality of a turnip. she is constantly is talking to people and making comments about her songs on stage. at least she is now. she invites people up on stage to sit around with her. her set has furniture that she picks up at the city she is in, and she has the audience come up and lounge around. turnips do not invite fan memember to sit on their couches on stage. :) i for one wish she did not get the fame and the huge popularity she did. it would have been nice to see her in a small intimate cafe or something. she seems cut out for that type of show. but because her fan base is so big now.... ah well... enough bitching. i am sorry, i just hate liz bashing.... oh yeah. at my radio station they had a new lisa germano ep, a single that 4AD put out for her song "cry wolf." it has one new song on it as well as four remixes/edits of her song. the remix of "cancer of everything" is SOOOOO great! the violins are haunting like nothing i have heard. does anyone know if this has been officially (as in "i can buiy it at my local store") released? thank you for wading through my rambling. irvin ------------------------------ From: Irvin Fei-Chiang Lin Date: Mon, 17 Apr 1995 22:37:45 -0500 (CDT) Subject: oh yeah i forgot to ask.... sorry to bug ya'll again. i just got ahold of a boot of lisa loeb, and it got me a hankerin' for more lisa loeb stuff (did i really use the word "hankerin'"? that is so sad). does anyone have info to the label she is signed and to the release date? also can anyone tell me if her purple tape is still available, and where i can get a hold it? thank you. irvin ------------------------------ From: Michael K Curry Date: Tue, 18 Apr 1995 00:22:15 +0059 (EDT) Subject: Re: Happy on PKN correction, Sally Oldfield, and Rennaissance On Mon, 17 Apr 1995 BOUTAME@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu wrote: > Well, I'm glad I was able to pass on some news to you all--too bad I had it > wrong! The following is clarification of my (again) limited opinion.....and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of other ectophiles ;-) I agree with your above statement. I did not bash "exile..." nor do I dislike "Whipsmart" I have not seen Liz "live" in person, but enough times on Letterman, SNL, etc. to be able to "hear" what she sounds like live. A friend of mine who has seen her perform, who is usually pretty gracious with up-and-coming singer/songwriters - heartily agreed with my opinion about her lack of personality on stage - or rather - her look of unease with perfoming live. She has a voice like Suzanne Vega without the "coloring". I don't think she is so much a singer as she is a songwriter. I guess it's just a personal thang.... I know a few very capable female singer/songwriters who are toughing it out in the clubs in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio (where I used to live) who would give a (insert random body part) to have the opportunities that Liz Phair has had in her career. I'm (jealous perhaps...) distressed that she comes from a reasonably well-off family, went to a very good school (Oberlin if I'm not mistaken) and has had it relatively easy in her career (not to mention that she is engaged - and wears a pretty good sized rock - I believe - to her manager) As I said... living in Chicago ... one tends to hear many sides of the tale because there are people here who are a lot more jealous/puzzled about her popularity than I am. What solidified my mixed opinion of her was the story that she cancelled her tour because she just could not bear to play live - she was tired, etc. So the band she hired was..... well... you know.... rhymes with plucked.... Then her record company said - wait a minute - you swore on a stack of Rolling Stones that you would tour to promote this album. *Heavy sigh* oh well... I guess I'm going to have to tour after all to promote this album. Nobody twisted her arm and said..... oh come on honey... we really want you to sign with us..... pleeeeeze.... There ARE independent labels here in Chicago... ;-) IMO - an artist should NEVER sell-out (or sign with a BIG label) unless they are prepared to face the consequences - whether it be grueling tours, t.v. appearances, putting out less than brilliant albums, or cutting your hair and dying it green (okay I'm exaggerating). There are plenty of people that put out extraordinary music who do not tour to promote it (i.e XTC, Happy, and Kate Bush). Some are prohibited by funds, some by stage fright - but people still buy their albums. I would have more respect for sister Liz if she put out her great studio albums and just focused on doing that. Maybe going around the midwest (like Happy tours in the East) playing smaller venues. Not making zillions of dollars, but maintaining artistic integrity, doing what she loves, and not having to deal with the "spotlight". But cut the whining crap already! I would LOVE to have a record company exec say "we love your stuff - we would love to sign you" but I would think long and hard not only about the abundant paychecks, but the being gone 6 months out of the year, living in hotel rooms, etc. I would think about what a record company exec says when I want to change the direction of my music with each album ("you WHAT??!!!"), or want to hire/fire band members because they are jerks, druggies, or drunks only to be told "we can't do that now - you're on tour..." There IS a price for fame and fortune in the music industry - and it's a total crap shoot. Just because you are popular on one album doesn't mean you're the next Tori Amos or Cranberries. You could just be the next Enuf Z Nuff or Material Issue (referencing once "next big thing" Chicago bands). Just because a person is a brilliant musician doesn't mean they can hack the business (which can suck!) Okay hon... I'll retract my claws now..... Sorry for the spewing. I felt I had to clarify my position somewhat.
