Based on what I heard, I've got > to pick up her CD... This is actually Jill's second album. I looked for it yesterday but didn't see it. Her first album is very good, and featured the single/video "Too cool to fall in love" and the beautiful song, "Life goes on without you." if you like her, try to find her first album too. She actually played in Boston Friday and Saturday this past weekend with Robyn Hitchcock. Didn't find out until I looked at the Phoenix Saturday morning, and then it was too late for me to arrange to see her. I taped 120 minutes last night but haven't watched it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing the video. In a similar vein, I did pick up a new CD by Robin Lane. Robin is a local folk/pop singer in Boston. She released 2 or 3 albums in the early 80's and had a minor hit with the song "When things go wrong" with her band, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters. I've only listened to a few tracks on the new CD but it sounds very nice. It's kind of funny, one of the songs on her CD is called "Wishing on telstar" which she Sussanah Hoffs (Bangles) of all people, covered on her ill-fated solo album. Also picked up the new Jayhawks CD (featuring Victoria Williams' husband) because I love the song "Blue" so much. It's a good album. I quote "debut" because she actually had an album out about 5 years ago. She also toured with Joe Jackson at that time--as his opening act. She was originally from the Denver area, where I used to live, and so there was quite a buzz about her when her first album came out. She had a fun track on the You Sleigh Me! She goes on at 8:30 for about 40 minutes or so. As, I'm sure, D^2 will confirm. There are several reasons to make the effort to see this/these show(s). 1 She is TRULY alternative. That is, *I* don't know of anyone making music remotely similar to hers, and by alternative, I mean, she fits into no genre...Elements of classical (sic) voice and chamber music, jazz piano, electronic music, and some pop synthesize to make for a style unlike anything familiar (to me at least). 2 She's VERY good (IMO). I've had her CD for 6 months now and *can't* burn myself out on it. 3 These are her only East Coast dates, and unless Berkeley, CA is more accessible to you.... 4 You might luck into a chance encounter with some Ecto legends :) *I* will be there (one or both days), and I know METH and woj are planning to go.....Seriously, you can stop at reasons one through three if you like. NB- The Knitting Factory show, at least, is "unplugged" just her (incredible soprano) voice, and a piano. Word has it that the Bitter End has a Grand Piano, while the Knitting Factory has a "nice upright"...Though the show at the Knitting Factory is going to be longer...why not see both so you don't have to make up your mind? I got there 20 minutes into the opening Williams Brothers set, and located Ed Suranyi. He had saved me a place at his table, where else? Right up in front! Ed, if you weren't a guy, I'd kiss you! As I found out later, we sat two tables away from some actress who they had reserved the middle front table for. Ed said her name was something like Wynonna (Rider, Bider, or somethign like that). Ryder? Hell, who cares? I was there to see Victoria!! (hee hee...) ;-) I'd list Vic's set, only thing is, i left the sheet of paper at home today! Will do it tomorrow. Hey, I was able to hook up with our resident ectophile/manager Nick Hill at the show. He noticed my printout on the table, and came over and introduced himself and a couple of his friends, one of which I am makeing a copy of "Happy Come Home" (the video) for. Nick, you are one LUCKY man. Victoria signed a _Loose_ poster that I snagged off one of the pillars after the show. More details tomorrow. On that thread... especially living in a big city - we grow up so jaded. That seeing violence on television really is "no big deal" to us anymore. I know by the birthday list that a good portion of us are (I hate to use the term) Generation X'ers. How many of us know kids (or were kids) that were victims of abuse? To pass blame is senseless, because as you mentioned, that kind of violence is something passed on through the generations like the family heirlooms. All we can do is say "no more" with our own lives, and our children. We all need to stand up and speak out against (apathy towards) violence of any and all kinds, violence towards animals, this planet, and most important, EACH OTHER! Uh oh.... I'm sounding like Mr. VanDreesen from "Beavis & Butthead"... but seriously folks... I've always been ultra-sensitive towards violence, whether it be "faked" as in film or real as on the nightly news. It ALWAYS bothers me -( I guess that's partly why I became a vegetarian 6 years ago after watching a t.v. special about poultry farming). Imagine a future generation of kids growing up NOT knowing a classmate that was beaten or starved or neglected by a parent, imagine a generation not knowing the pain of losing a classmate, friend, or family member to suicide. To borrow from what's his name from Steely Dan... "What a wonderful world this would be..." By the way, Laurel.... Sharon of Rhodeways asked me to post this: Hi everybody - I would just like to introduce myself to any new Ectophiles (or old ones) who don't know about the Happy Rhodes fanzine. My name is Sharon Nichols and I am the editor of _Rhodeways: The International Happy Rhodes Medium_. The fanzine has been in full swing for over a year now, and we are now working on issue five. Issues two, three, and four are still in print and are available. Currently, the fanzine consists of sixteen pages, has very nice half tones, and is professionally printed - it is very similar to the Tori Amos fanzine, _Really Deep Thoughts_. Happy supports the fanzine 100% and we have a lot of fun putting it together. I have had requests from Ectophiles who want to know what the fanzine is like. We put a lot of thought into every issue and fill it with whatever we think you will find interesting (all Happy related too -- not a bunch of fillers like some other fanzines!) And we always throw in some demented thing straight out of Happy's head. The latest issue contains some great new pictures (concert as well as candid), a very strange drawing that Happy did just for the 'zine, and a nice story that she wrote for us about her childhood. Here's a few excerpts from that: "[My father] had a console stereo that was huge to my little eyes. Whenever I could, I would sit in the middle of the two speakers and trance out on the pattern on the front of the console. It was a brown, criss-cross type pattern and it made for good "kid meditation" ... But there I would sit, sort of rocking back and forth to the music ... I was picking the notes apart and trying to understand how they worked together to form the bigger musical picture." "At night I would sleep with the curtains open, so that I could see the moon and the street lights. I would stare out at the night and have "waking dreams" ... I had a pillowcase that had pictures of a princess in a long flowing pastel gown. She lived in my head with others who had their own adventures. Sometimes I was her. But these beings flourished mostly at night when I was certain I was safe. I saw images of myself dancing and singing." Going back a little further to issue three, Happy takes part in a very silly interview: What are you like when you're drunk? "Ask the U.S. Marine Corp." What is your greatest fear? "That I'll walk into a room where Blossom is and we both implode." So let's go all the way back to issue two where we have the three original sketches of "Tirk" the Equipoise monster and an interview with Kevin Bartlett where he tells about the second time he saw Happy. "And she was kneeling on the floor, playing with or rescuing a spider, I'm not sure ... I said "Here, I want you to have this [tape]. It's a new album." And I was, you know, nervous and stuff myself and she kind of took it and said "Thanks" and really didn't look at me. I thought, "What a strange girl" and went my way ... She's quite a believer in "life is life". We rescue ants from the house and get them outside safely. Get them away from the cats." "She's hysterically funny. She should go do stand up comedy and get out of the record business. Her ability to do impressions and character voices is uncanny. And she won't do them for anybody. She does a great Ozzy Osbourne ... Her mind is like a steel trap. She just retains the wierdest shit. That's one reason I'll keep her, you know, for the entertainment value." I hope that this was an interesting summation for the curious! We really do try to have a lot of fun with this. _Rhodeways_ will always provide a little side of Happy you'll never find anywhere else! So here are the vitals for the interested: A one-year subscription to _Rhodeways_ is $15 for four issues in the U.S. and $18 overseas (Canadians luck out). Single issues are $5 if you wait to buy them at the concerts! Rhodeways, P.O. Box 1953, Kingston, NY 12401 Phone/Fax (914) 339-2561 Please note that this is a new address. And remember that this is YOUR fanzine. Is there something you would like to know about Happy and her music? Any stories that you would like her to tell? She's very good about providing what ever I ask for. So far I haven't had to use any weapons. And when I'm at a loss, She'll come up with something. So we're open to any suggestions, anything you want to see or hear about. So please show Happy your support by joining _Rhodeways_ and find out why she's efficient at making ashtrays ... ------------------------------ From: Philip Sainty Date: Tue, 11 Apr 1995 16:34:06 +1200 Subject: Re: A message from Sharon Nichols I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again - I think _Rhodeways_ is a really excellent fanzine, and well worth the subscription! What do you say when an old favorite artist heads in directions you don't aprove of? On Sunday I saw BETTY, a band I have loved and praised repeatedly in the past. The last time I saw them was a year ago in LA, and both of those shows shared the same flaw. Their new music is mostly really, really boring. Some of them were mediocre dance pop, while others were mind numbingly bland ballads. The show still sometimes had that Betty spark, but it didn't exist in much of the show. Afterwards, Brienne "Wow, I can feel the bass in my butt!" Brown and I were debating whether we, as fans, should make some sort of comment to the band or not. I felt that input, stated as politely as possible, was better than just giving up on the band and not seeing them any more. (Of course, it's not like the band would particularly notice my presence or absence.) While we were having this discussion, one of the band members stopped by to talk with us, drawn no doubt by Brienne's fine Hello Betty t-shirt. She thanked us for coming out, but neither of us had the nerve to share any of our true feelings. Any thoughts on this? Speak up or slink out? Or some further alternative I haven't thought of? Like sending a letter and signing it "a concerned fan who is too pathetic to confront you face to face." For what it's worth, Betty will be entering the studio to record many of there new songs in a few months.
