Ilka and me were to our fourth Heather Nova concert within 12 months. And without hesitation - it was the best one. Again: if you have any chance to see her, then do so! The basic rundown of the show was the same as in Stuttgart, first Heather Nova's producer Felix Tod on guitar and vocs, accompanied by Heather's guitarist for two songs, then Oil On Canvas, this times with less of the opera style vocals (anyone got an idea why she always disappears from stage when she's not singing? Problems with bad air?) As I said before, Heather and her band were in great form, the audience was frenetic (but unfortunately a little bit noisy during the songs), and so we got a second encore, with Heather on acoustic guitar doing (the first time I heard her do so) a song not written by herself, Like A Hurricane. Got backstage again... TV: Heather Nova's concert in Hamburg will be filmed by VH-1 (don't know whether UK or German one), and they'll also do an interview with Heather in her flat (kitchen etc.). Unfortunately they don't know yet when that will air. Anyone got VH-1? Anyone willing to tape this? TV again: Heather Nova will appear on MTV Most Wanted (MTV Europe) someday next week. I've always known Laurie Anderson was a damn fine musician, but is she a sculptor, also? I ask because I saw this tidbit in the New York Times Sunday Magazine today, in an article entitled "If They Built a Memorial to the War In the Streets: Seven Proposals to Honor the Urban Dead" "Laurie Anderson "The Blood Fountain: Monument to Murder "Red liquid gushes from the top and side of Anderson's 50-foot-high monument. The liquid flows into a pool at the base, staining the white marble scarlet. The pool is ringed with red lights that illuminate the fountain at night. Anderson, a world-renowned performance artist, adheres to the City Beautiful ideal of adorning civic spaces with heroic sculpture. A fountain of blood is probably not what City Beautiful architects had in mind, but then they did not envision a city where cildren pass through metal detectors durring school." To the right of the caption is a full-page digital manipulation, placing Anderson's imaginary sculpture in the middle of New York City. In my family we have a rather pragmatic approach to getting presents; we usually go birthday and Christmas shopping on or after the event, rather than buying presents ahead of time. So I decided that I wanted to get a couple of CDs for my birthday, and ended up getting: Throwing Muses, _University_: I've had one listen through it so far; it's not the same as classic Throwing Muses, but I like it. I'll probably be able to come up with a more thorough review later, since my listening time has mostly been taken up by -- Bel Canto, _Shimmering, Warm, and Bright_: I really should get around to getting some of the universally-recommended Ecto fare a little sooner. I _love_ this album. I'm going back shortly and ordering _White Out Conditions_. My brother was even polite and suffered through me playing _SW&B_ in my Mom's car on my way home. His musical tastes are not quite Ectoid; he tends to hate all of my female-vocal music, while I tend to hate a lot of his heavy-metal/progressive-rock stuff. A few of you had a discussion going on falling in love with a performer as you listen to their voice .... and get drawn into their world, etc. I've had this same sort of discussion with people, mostly creative-types - writers, painters, musicians. When a person is "blessed" with the gift of talented creativity ...we are all blessed with creativity, some of us get talent, some do not... : ) anyway.... we are also cursed with a heightened sensitivity to nasty people, tough life lessons or ultra painful situations that leave marks on the soul. Also, not too many very creative, brilliant artists are good communicators outside of their medium. I think perhaps, that is why Tori talks in circles sometimes. She is so much better at "talking" through her music. She can probably collect her thoughts better when she is at the piano than when she's in an interview. I do love the way she gives interviews - but I'm sure she'd rather sing or play than talk. Perhaps the same thing goes for Happy. Kate is another example of someone who doesn't do particularly well in interviews. She is very guarded - but can get quite "personal" in her music. I am as guilty as the next intense music lover of "falling in love" with an artist because of their music (Brian May, Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill, and my list of female artists). The last example I can think of is Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish. From the first time I heard the album "Spilt Milk" I thought to myself, I've got to meet this guy to thank him for writing such wonderful music. When I was a kid spinning the heck out of my Queen, Genesis, etc. albums, I never thought those bands would be making the same kind of music when I "grew up" (well i'm not really grown up yet..) But along comes 70's inspired Jellyfish - I fall in "love". I joined the fan club ; ) When I finally got to meet Andy in person, he was quite shy, and pretty distant - and I met him a couple of times. Even after a fun conversation after a concert - the second time I met him, ouside in frigid temperatures, a handful of fans asking for autographs (and I was with my boyfriend at the time.... darn....) he was sweet, friendly, but still aloof. I guess I should have expected it - he's HUMAN after all.... We all have our "voice". Some in music, some in painting or drawing (or music and painting) some in writing, and others in acting. (I always go back to Jane Campion's film "The Piano" - that movie epitomizes my feelings on music) Just because a person can get up on stage and sing in front of 1000 people a night, or publish a book of poetry, or a painting of a personal nature, doesn't mean that that same person is going to feel comfortable speaking to one person in a closed room giving an "interview" or meeting a group of strangers after a concert signing autographs. It's hard to explain - but I guess what I'm really trying to say is that most artistic people I've met are really very shy on the inside and would rather be alone than in a "crowd" or group. ".....maybe it was for the love we made...." Jane Siberry Okay.. next topic......Stewart and Chris raved about Muriel's Wedding. I loved this movie because of the warmth of the lead female characters - Muriel (Mariel) and her best friend (I don't remember the girl's name) but this is a must see for anyone who's felt like "nothing" in their lives because of what other people tell them (parents, peers). Muriel is "ugly" in the beginning of the movie, an unemployed doormat of a girl living at home in a strange dysfunctional home - until she escapes it all and tries to change her life. By the end of the movie she is "beautiful" both in form and spirit. I'm going to see it again .... and it has a great soundtrack! I've got more ectomail to read so cheers to ya'all.... oh yeah.... Fruitopia ads were shown twice during the 2 hour brouadcast, one in each hour. The first one was the Ice Tea ad that was shown during the Academy Awards. The 2nd one was new, I think, but didn't seem to specify any particular flavor. Since I haven't seen all the ads from the last campaign, I suppose I can't say for sure that the 2nd one is new. I can't find IED's master list of the ads shown. The main reason I say it's new is that the date at the end says 1995, but I don't know if that's put there for when the ad is made, or when the ad is broadcast. I missed the beginning of it, but what I do have features the words "in fruit integration. people could learn a lot from fruit" and shows, as usual, a variety of fruits, while heavy on the grapes, pineapples and apples. Near the end, 8 different bottles of Fruitopia are shown in kaliedoscope...then the psychedelic "Fruitopia" signs, then the words "for the" and then an abstract of a mind. Oooh, deep. So, Fruitopia's kinda like fish then, eh? If I were musical I'd try and describe the music, but I'm not, so I can't. It sounds vaguely Sakamoto-ish, with the beat going... boomboom....boomboom....boom....boomboom....boomboom....boom The music sounds flute/whistle-ish, and I swear I hear, twice, train whistles. The vocals are high-pitched and child-like, but when listening on headphones the vocals are literally shouts, only with the volume on the mix turned down. I can't make out what she's saying, but I swear it sound like "HI HI JUICE!" :-) Wellio, that's not much of a description, but it'll do. I think aiming those 2 ads at skating audiences was a very smart move, except for the fact that the music in the Fruitopia ads was much better than any of the music the skaters used. Well, I tend to be rather shy myself (not to imply that I'm artistic or anything), so I rarely approach performers after shows. But there are certainly some notable exceptions to your observation. Both Jewel and Victoria Williams seem to love sitting around and chatting with fans as much as they enjoy performing. Jewel often asks people not to leave without saying goodbye (and means it), and Victoria seemed like so much fun in concert that I had to say hi, as did many other people. She greeted each one of us like we were old friends, and peppered us with questions about our lives. Of course, Victoria is unlike anyone, but I just thought I'd throw out a few exceptions. Also, at the Middle East show I saw, Happy seemed pretty comfortable talking to people. More comfortable than she appeared to me on the stage. On to Muriel's Wedding. I've also seen it, and found it a movie really hard not to like. Anyone seeing it would have to have a good time (so there). There's been a lot of interest in my mailbox for an Ecto family album, similar to the one on the Indigo Girls family album Web page. So I've decided to put one together! However two things come to mind. The first I'd like some feedback on. First, should this be a public page (linked to the various Ecto pages and whatnot) or a private one (not linked to anything so you need to know its URL to get to it)? The initial #ig album was private, but it's now linked to their main page. The way I see it is that some people may not want their photos available to anyone who just happens to stumble by the Ecto pages. We'd not restrict things completely (I could put passwords onto the pages but I think that's being silly) but just make a small effort to keep this within the family - within the group of people who read the list. Or does this seem unnecessarily insular? What do you all think? Second, I want to keep the pages fairly simple in format for now... maybe we can make them fancier later when I have more time. The format I'm requesting from everyone is this: - - Your name, and your IRC nick if you have one/want to put one. - - Your email address if you want to publish one. - - Your picture, if you want one. - - Your bio, if you want one. Just a paragraph or two of text. You could use the Ectofile format here. - Your home page, if you have one. (if you prefer you could have this page point to your home page and skip my pages entirely!) That's it! :) Here are the nerd details on the picture files: - Format. Pictures preferably in GIF format, as it saves me time. But if necessary I can take most popular formats. (TIFF, PICT, BMP, JPEG, IFF, Targa, PCX, PhotoShop, Scitex, MacPaint, FLI, CGI, FITS, XBM, blah blah.) - Size. No bigger than about 25K or 30K for now, please. I may up that later. - Mail format. BinHex, MIME or uuencode. If you don't have a scanned pic of yourself or want to send a disk, please email me for my snailmail address. I won't be able to scan people's pictures in right away for lack of time, but will be able to later. If you want to code up your own HTML document, feel free! I've put a template online, accessible from the album page, and you're welcome to use that. If you don't like my template go ahead and do whatever you like as long as the file isn't too big. I was in Tower yesterday, when I noticed _Coma_ by Max Sharam among the CD singles. I'd heard a mention (alright, a rave) about her sometime late last year, so I knew I was onto a good thing. I bought it immediately. :) I'm impressed. She reminds me a lot of Margot Smith, but she's slightly more inventive. There are 5 songs in the CD altogether... 1. Coma (A Million Year Girl) "I live like I live in a coma..." Very gripping. Starts off with almost operatic vocalisation, then Sharam brings us back to earth with a bang. Very catchy lyrics. :) 2. Hunting Ground "No way, not on my hunting ground..." Wow. This one expresses all the hurt and anger felt when your lover's 'done you wrong'. :) I love it! 3. U Cradle Me "We were balancing on an ice age." When I saw the title of this song, I thought "Oh no, Prince." That's about as far as the likeness is taken though. I like it. 4. Is it OK...? I think this one's a cover, although I'm not sure. It's a very stripped-down arrangement with acoustic guitar and keyboards, with Sharam's vocals over the top. Very relaxing. 5. Crash Landing! "You chew me up, I'm spat out" This song uses overdubs and yes, a string quartet, to maximum effect. A fitting finish to the single. It left me thinking "When is her album coming out?" The cover is a not-so-subtle nod to Margot Smith's first album, and the interior photo is... um, well, *interesting* :) This CD single is not in a jewel case of any description. It's in a paper slip cover with the lyrics to all the songs except "Is it OK...?" written on the inside. If you can get hold of this single, I thoroughly recommend it.
