First of all.. thanks much to all of you on your answers to my Web and FAQ questions. Hopefully someday I will have a setup at a home and can have better internet access than I have now - i.e. Web access! Yes, MJM..... northwest side, not too far from Rolling Stones :-) At thie time I had the plates I was living in Bensenville and working in Rolling Meadows. Anyway... I'm glad you liked my tale. To all the rest of you Chicago Ectophiles... I was kind of half thinking of checking out the Throwing Muses show at the Vic (?) in April (I think it's the 15th - I know Belly is the night before at the Riv.. - anyone else planning on going? anyone else have tickets/know if it is sold out? I guess I can call for tickets myself ; ) Oh yeah, and maybe Jewell this week ... since you've all piqued my curiosity about her. Vickie made mention about the Fruitopia spot with Kate's music - that must have been at a moment of feline-inspired drowse because I missed it.... that certainly would have made watching the telecast more interesting! Speaking of feline-inspired....I've been reading about all of your cat toy ideas. I am twice cat-owned. My "children" named Devil (also called Snappy Tom or Butthead - he's a 20+ lb. orange neutered tomcat) and Tammie (also called Babycat and Crabby Tabby) like to play with rubber bands and those rubber band hair thingies - much to my paranoid dismay. I can substitute the rubber bands with those plastic milk jug rings tho - and they can bat those around for a bit of time. I do love to watch my Devil dismember those commercially produced catnip mice. Especially after they have gotten stuck under a radiator or a couch and get covered with tumbleweeds (dust/fur balls) - - and have my "boy" find and present them to me as a grand gesture of his undying love and devotion. As I have the randomizer turned on in my brain... I would love to be in the Ecto family album. If I modem a scanned photo - what format should it be in (I take it "GIF") and should I pkzip it or send it as is - and who to send?....even tho I don't foresee myself having Web capabilities until the fall sometime when I move back to Columbus, Ohio - as the place where I'm going ;-) has a setup at home as opposed to work where I am now. All of you who saw Sarah on this tour.. I am truly envious. Until last week, I was flat broke - Sarah played on my birthday and I couldn't see her - I was quite disappointed. Oh yeah.. and how about King Crimson - sheesh is this the secret "friends only" concert tour or what??!!! I am *VERY* angry that they are booked in to play the Bismarck and it's already SOLD OUT!!!!!! AAAAAARRRRGHHHH!!!!! shall I venture as far to say .. pissed off..... Anyone know where I can get tickets? Thanks all of you out there in Ectoland.. this is really an enlightening experience (this list) and I look forward to the new list of mail I find every few days I log in to retrieve it! Saw this movie called "Muriel's Wedding" - it's wonderful! will post on it later! Amy (p.s. I play a red Fender Squier Strat. Not entirely well yet, but enough to get my ideas across to my collaborator - I love it! ) ------------------------------ From: jsutton@rahul.net (Jack Sutton) Date: Sat, 01 Apr 1995 16:20:17 -0500 Subject: Tanita Tikaram/Lovers in the City Hi all, Finally, I got a copy of Tanita's new CD "Lovers in the City". I first have to preface this review with the fact that I have been hopelessly charmed and intoxicated with Tanita since first hearing "Ancient Heart". A work unbelievably created when she was still a teenager. "Ancient Heart" was a big success and put Tanita on the musical map. Her next 3 CD's "The Sweet Keeper", "Everybody's Angel", and "Eleven Kinds of Loneliness" were less well received , and I sense a disappointment to some fans of "Ancient Heart". I don't see it that way, I treasure all 4 CD's equally. I see the growth, and the experimentation that all great artist exhibit along their creative paths. I think her voice is so pure and so distinctive and she is not afraid to explore and challenge the limits. If I had to choose one desert island voice, it would be hers. As a lyricist, again she's in a world not occupied by many people. She doesn't write sugar sweet love songs, or infact anything that readily apparent. Her lyrics are not easy, and some may not be understandable to anybody but her self. They make you think, and sometimes not think, they require careful attention and many listens. Many listens can definitely describe my relationship to Tanita. My background does not qualify me as an unbiased reviewer, so with that in mind, I'm ready to talk about "Lovers in the City". On the surface "Lovers in the City" does not seem very different or radical than Tanita's other 4 CD's. However, like her previous work, upon careful scrutiny this effort is delightfully spiced with innovations and surprises. The very 1st cut "I Might Be Crying" is the best song I have heard this year. It has a wonderful calypso type rhythm with haunting chants and backing vocals by Jennifer Warnes. Jennifer does backing vocals on several other cuts and is superb. Tanita also uses the London Session Orchestra and The Valentini Strings on selected cuts. The arrangement and execution of these resources is masterful as "Feeding the Witches" aptly demonstrates, features Tanita and the London Session Orchestra. We've heard Jewel yodel, now Tanita joins the yodeling craze. The "Yodelling Song" is worth the the whole price of the CD to hear Tanita do a duet yodel with Don Edwards, while Jim Keltner bangs the drums. Every cut is crafted with caring precision, thoughtful arrangements and fine selection of musicians and resources. There is not a weak song in the bunch, and what a wonderful treat to get 10 gifts at once. If Tanita indeed lost some support since "Ancient Heart" I think "Lovers in the City " will make up ground for her. It will be on my top ten CD's for 95, but I knew that before I heard it. However, I know I'm biased but, I think this CD is great and highly recommend it to anybody. Hi. i have yet to introduce myself, but i shall leave that for later. myabe people will recognise my name by now anyway...i was the one who asked about the "male ecto artist"... > I also like Kate Bush, but none of her releases knocks me > over like the "Hounds Of Love" - I have "The Dreaming", "The > Kick Inside", and have heard "LionHeart". Would I be knocked > out by "The Sensual World" or "Red Shoes"? Does anyone know the > difference between the "normal" "Sensual World" and the "Sensual > World (Picture CD) Import from Canada"? Does this have digital > photos on the CD as well, or something? lionheart is a bit like the kick inside, but i feel the kick inside is a little better. still worth getting if you like TKI. the sensual world might appeal to you, it is a bit more ethereal and since you mentioned that, you might like checking it out. i wasn't all too taken with the red shoes. it is okay and for me (being a bit of a KaTe freak) i had to get it but others might say it is worth skipping....i rarely listen to it. > Jane Siberry is another artist who is on my short list of > unbelievables. I only have "When I Was A Boy" - are her others > like this as well? I'm tempted to go out and get ALL her stuff! jane is phenomenal. check out her album The Walking (if you can find it here in the US). each album of hers is so different in feel. her early stuff is almost folky fairly acoustic, and the album before WIWAB, entitled bound by the beauty is much more organic, almost country? well maybe not that...but definetly not as ethereal as WIWAB/ jane has her own mailing list (hello? is the sibling list still functional? i haven't received anything in weeks...). look for her new album that is suppose to hit the stores end of the year, as well as a compilation of songs that include her and suzanne vega (can anyone tell more about this? i heard it mentioned on the s.vega list and no one has told me more about it...something to do with a frnech collaboration?) > I think Lisa Germano is REALLY GREAT when I'm in the right > mood, but that isn't always - I have her two most recent, "Geek > the Girl" and "Happiness", does anyone know how to get a hold of > her earlier release, "The Moon Seven Times"? I'd be really > interested! her first album was called on the way to the moon palace, not the moon seven times. the moons even times by the way is a group that might appeal to you, and fellow ectophiles. i know they have been mentioned here and there on the list, rather ethereal in the same vein as some 4AD stuff. lisa is great. on the way to the moon palace is deleted though :( i wish i could find it....:( other things to check out by lisa is a remix ep that she put out called inconsiderate bitch which has a nice 8 minute long 4AD remix of her dresses song (you make me want to wear dresses) i think it is called (late night) dresses on the ep. rather hard to find as well....but some of us have been rather lucky enough to find it.... > I really like Sinead O'Connor's "Lion and the Cobra", and am > tempted to get "Universal Mother", but haven't heard much about > it here... funny, i don't remember a lot of people mentioning sinead at all...universal mother is a way underrated album. it is very slow and mello, don't expect another lion and the cobra or i don't want....it is more moody and there are some real highlights on the album. i don't think a lot of people bought it because they wanted another angst filled powerful album like her first two, and instead got an album less dramatic in a sense, but more dramatic in another. anyone else? > And of course, Happy -- I bought "War Paint", and immediately > had to go out and get "Equipoise" and "Rearment", all of them > great. I then bough "Building The Colossus", which I found > excellent. I just got "Rhodes I" a couple of days ago. PJH though is wonderful (though i am not taken by her NIN-ish latest album, i blame flood (the producer) on that) not that i don't like NIN, but i bought the album thinking i might get sheela-na-gig and instead got head like a hole. wassup with that? > I like Belly (Star, but > not King so much), and after I played it a few times, Lush > (Spooky) was very effective. if you like belly (who have been mentioned here and there) listen to throwing muses, tanya's (lead singer of belly) former band. kristin hersh who leads throwing muses is SOOOOO wonderful. also the breeders. tanya was in the breeders before she formed belly (check out the breeder's first album POD) > If I'm in particular moods, I'll > even listen to music like Bikini Kill, 7 Year Bitch, and (some) > female rap. They're playing shows in the Minneapolis area-- but they will play dates elsewhere, soon. (Chicago area, for sure. I'm waiting on details. :) ) The new album will have cover art by Michael Zulli, features songs by Emma, Lorraine, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, and others. Guest musicians include former and current members of Boiled in Lead (also Steven Brust, Lojo Russo, and other Minneapolitans). Produced by Adam Stemple. I think Neil wrote an afterward or forward for this album, as well. I'm terribly excited. I know a number of you enjoyed their first album, _The Return of Pansy Smith and Violet Jones_. That one was made when Emma and Lorraine had just started playing music together and admittedly had little show/studio experience under their belts. And still, that album received much critical acclaim-- and is just darn good. The Flash Girls web page URL is http://www.health.org/flash/flash.html There is new information to be had there (finally)-- a list of gigs, ordering info for the new album, and a track list/credits list for _Maurice and I_. I still maintain an announcment only electronic mailing list for the Flash Girls. A mailing went out just a week ago-- with info on the latest gigs, track list for the album, etc. Within the next couple of weeks, we'll have majordomo running at Iway and may make it a bonafide real electronic discussion list. If you'd like to subscribe to whatever version of the Flash Girls email list, just send me email at lakrahn@iw.net. It's a new hardcover fantasy anthology from Tor books called _The Armless Maiden and Other Tales for Childhood's Survivors_. Edited by Terri Windling. Our recent thread of conversation about authors, led to some mention of Terri. She is the editor who "discovered" and edited and nurtured the first books from the Scribblies (that Minneapolis area fantasy crowd), as well as Charles de Lint, and other contemporary fantasists. She also created Borderlands, edited the groundbreaking _Elsewhere_ anthologies, etc. The jacket blurb from Jane Yolen is very true: "If there is a single person at the nexus of fantasy literature in the 1980s and 1990s, it is Terri Windling-- as editor, as writer, as painter, as critic, as muse." This book is not your typical anthology-- there is much in it about abuse and suffering that children endure. It is rife with oldstyle fairy tales, essays, contemporary retellings of fairy tales, and poems. Includes both new and reprinted works from: Emma Bull, Charles de Lint, Steven Gould, Ellen Kushner, Tanith Lee, Patricia McKillip, Susan Palwick, Joanna Russ, Anne Sexton, Delia Sherman, Peter Straub, Jane Yolen, Will Shetterly, Midori Snyder, Lisel Mueller, Munro Sickafoose, Gwen Strauss, Kara Dalkey, Caroline Stevermer, Lynda Barry, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Sonia Keizs, Tappan King, Ellen Steiber, and others. It's a well woven tapestry... an anthology best read from beginning to end (rather than jumping in and reading the bits by your fave authors first-- tho one can do that, I'm sure... I did with at least one piece. But now I'm reading it from cover to cover...). I feel it's an important and moving work. Capable of eliciting both tears and thought. and some smiles, as well. "The _Armless Maiden_ is a theme anthology, that theme being childhood and its darker passages... This is a book about childhood; but, even though it is full of fairy stories, it is not a book for children... The fairy tales in this book are both dark and bright, with pain and anger, wonder and hope. They are new tales spun from the threads of the old. Through the metaphoric language of fantasy, they look into the darkest shadows of the night, yet find by night's end the silver glimmer of dawn." - Terri Windling, from her Introduction... It's really incredible. Hunt it down at your bookstore if you can afford to buy it in hardcover (I think I came darn close to bouncing a check to get this one, but it was a must for me) or pester your favorite librarian to get it for you. It's truly sad that so many kids never get to be kids... And that patterns repeat. But some folks break free-- and often music, art, and books are responsible. People survive, whether by forgetting or telling or just pushign their way through. Humina. Can you tell this book has me thinking a lot about the abuses-- both grotesque and small-- that so many children endure... And about how some fairy tales are no help to kids, because they say everything is hunky dory. I wonder what it's like with so many kids growing up with the only stories they hear/see/read being so saccharine. Everything turns out happy and everyone is pretty and la la la. The original point of the old fairy tales was to teach kids that sometimes things aren't what they seem, that there is evil out there, that there are tough things, but one can survive, etc. etc. etc. We're conditioned to believe in a happily-ever-after. And that it should come easy, to boot. sigh. well gee, I'm halfway through the book and I'm gonna go back to reading it. Leave you folks alone. :) Bestest (and hugs, darnit), Laurel Krahn /// lakrahn@iw.net Director of Operations /// 800.386.IWAY Iway Internet Services /// http://www.iw.net/ ------------------------------ From: something shakespeare never Date: Sun, 2 Apr 1995 20:19:49 -0400 Subject: Re: ectopics (wow, it feels weird to be caught up with ecto...) jeffy@wam.umd.edu sez: >Earlier in this post I was marveling at your memory (or your note-taking) >for who posted about what bands back when. i usually remember specific things that i want to (eventually) reply to, but i must admit that i just lump all ectoposts in a file until i get around to reading and replying - the memory has little or nothing to do with it (stop giggling, meredith). >>manufacture, another nettwerk >>band (moev has the honor of being one of the earliest nettwerk >>releases), did manage to ensnare sarah to sing backing vox on one >>of their songs. hmmm, i don't think i've ever heard this track. wow. >Aha! I don't know if it's based on a true story, but it sounds familiar. So, what else has Rebecca been in? (This is cross-posted to Ecto, so I'll expain for those who may not be recognizing the name, that Rebecca sang backup for Jane Siberry, and was one of the 5 women on "Count Your Blessings" along with Jane, Victoria Williams, Mary Margaret O'Hara & Holly Cole.)
