Ah, I used to know this, really I did. It's been too long since high school physics, and it's too early in the morning to try and figure it out for myself. Maybe someone else can help here. >b.) does it really only do this on the equinox? I've heard that the equinox makes it a lot easier to do, but that the "fact" that this is the only time you can do it is an old wives' tale. It's kinda like the story about water running down the drain in opposing directions in different hemispheres: the Coriolis effect has some impact, but it's minimal compared to the effect of the tiny currents that are already in the water, how you pull the plug out, etc. >c.) is 24 hours some sort of world record, or is the whole "an egg >will only stand on its end on the equinox" a crock?!? Mine lasted at least that long once, so I'd opt for the latter. It's that whole inertia thing. (In other words, go to the next post now! ;) ) First, male "Ecto" artists. Well, these are more from the singer/ songwriter end of the Ecto spectrum, but all are under-rated and have been around for a long time. (In no particular order): John Prine, Graham Parker, Warren Zevon, Timbuk 3, Loudon Wainwright III (later stuff) -- just for a start. I'm also tempted to add Neil Young to such a list. In spite of his fame, he's _still_ under-rated. :) These are just off the top of my head. Someday I'll have to sit down and put together a more full list, but it'll get you started. Also maybe we should include Happy's favorites here: Peter Gabriel, Yes, Queen, David Bowie. (A true child of her times. No? :) ). [CONSUMER WARNING: My tastes generally do not run in the same direction as the typical Ectophile!] Second, Ecto always surprises me, so maybe there might be another big Bonzo Dog fan lying in its weeds. In which case, I'm sad to announce that Viv Stanshall died in a fire at his home a couple of weeks ago. A tragic end to an somewhat tragic life. *sniff* Third, Meredith's quote from Sarah McLachlan about penises reminded me of one in a similar vein from Peggy Platt (an excellent Seattle comedian). "I love penises. I really do. I have a warm spot in my vagina for penises." (I hope that came across at all. She brought the house down with it). Fourth, three years ago tonight, about thirty Ectophiles gathered in Philadelphia, part of probably the largest audience ever to see Happy Rhodes live. I'm happy to realize that most of the Ectophiles who were at that concert are still hanging around Ecto. `Twas a great time. I was just listening to the QE2 Albany concert (three years ago Sunday) tape, and had forgotten how many people were talking loudly in that bar through that wonderful event, completely untouched by the greatness of talent displayed on that stage. So tonight, with a hearty shout of "We love you, Ray!", raise a toast to wish Happy many many more live shows (including one at the Backstage in Seattle, of course!). Wishing you all of the Northern Hemisphere folks a wonderful spring (though it remains a rumor around here), I remain ... It's sortof a show review, narrative of my St. Patrick's Day... Covers Boiled in Lead, Cordelia's Dad, the Flash Girls, and the Stuart Martz Band to some degree). - --------- I'm supposed to be writing a magazine article for _Business Page South Dakota_... but writing about the St. Patrick's Day festivities is much more fun. Well, I got to the show right after the doors opened. My friend Marcia accompanied me-- she'd never been to First Avenue, never seen Boiled in Lead. (I'm sure she's heard a few of their songs, as she lived with me for awhile). Her husband Paul was to meet us later. Macha Tri was the first band. And someone else will have to review them. I simply spaced out-- was up in the balcony catching up with Marcia, then mingling with folks I hadn't seen since Renfest, Fourth Street, and other places. I know Laura McKenzie was down there. And there were Irish pipes and a dulcimer and Drew joined them on bass for their last song or two. Very quiet from where I was. Cordelia's Dad played next. Started with an acapella number, then some acoustic stuff. Soon they dragged out the electric instruments. They're still a three piece, but there's a new female member of the band playing bass and singing sometimes. Seems like they are doing more original material now-- and different trad songs. Again, I can't name many songs-- I do know they played "Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still" which made me very happy. I still only have their first album. Which I love. Their set encouraged me to run out and grab their other stuff. They had a pretty short set. It wasn't quite 8pm and BiL wasn't supposed to take the stage until 8:30pm. Suddenly-- a shot rang out! (Well, no okay...) Suddenly I heard very loud drumming, and spotlights were directed on First Avenue's dancefloor (I was up in the balcony at this point)... In marched the Minnesota Pipes & Drums. Yes, indeed. Many bagpipes and drums and folks. They formed a big circle and played wonderfully, had a couple of dancers on one song. And the crowd went absolutely nuts. People were straining to get a good look at them, some were bouncing up and down with the music. The corp got a much bigger response than Macha Tri and Cordelia's Dad combined. I'd say they played for a good 20 minutes, if not more-- before marching out. It was highly highly cool. And somewhat surreal. Then BiL took the stage. It's rather blurry, I wish I could think to tell you what they opened with. It was an instrumental to kick it off, then right into "Step it Out Mary" (of course)... "Bring it Round" was played at the beginning of the show as well. By this point, Paul had joined Marcia at our table... I left my purse and jacket at the table and followed the hats. (i.e. I spotted Fred Levy Haskell and Steve Brust up against the front of the stage-- which led me to still more friends and familiar faces). Usually, I'm a wimpy person that sits at a table somewhere and observes bands. But I needed to be down tehre to see facial expressions and such. 'Twas highly cool. Emma and Will and Lorraine looked pretty sad when they had to leave to make their 9:30pm soundcheck at the Uptown Bar (I may have heard Emma whimper, but how is that possible when the guys were playing "Bad Hair" as Emma left). They played all sorts of stuff.... First Avenue was packed, the crowd was dancing until they could dance no more. Some folks behind the first couple rows were dancing pretty violently at the end.... There was no true break in the set-- except for a time when Robin had a lovely drum solo or two and joseph did likewise... (well he didn't play the drums, but you get the idea). The final encore was Jamie Across the Water. And it was beautiful. And it was a good thing that was the last song, because I don't think the crowd could've kept dancing. Show ended right around 10pm.... I chatted longer than I should've with folks, then beelined over to the Uptown bar-- where I caught the last song and a half of the Flash Girls set... They looked and sounded wonderful for that song, and the Uptown was packed. Ran into a few folks again at the uptown... David Dyer Bennett and Pamela Dean and Paul and Marcia and I were almost trampled when (suddenly a shot rang out!)... the MN Pipes and Drums came marching into the Uptown.... They crammed themselves onto the Uptown floor and stage and played for quite awhile. Crowd went wild. Then the Stuart Martz Band (a threepiece) played.... I stayed for most of their first set.... when they played Richard Thompson's "Tear Stained Letter", I was bopping around at the back of the bar... Ended up going to figlios for coffee and such with friends, had an obnoxious waiter pick on Paul, and all and all had a perfectly wonderful evening. Was very nice to finally meet Hilda! And the other leadheads she introduced me to. I meant to stop by and chat more, but caught up in the music, seeing old friends, and all that Good Stuff. One of the best nights I've had in a good long time, a very very good show by BiL. I think I danced until the fringes came off of my ultrasuede vest... :) It was really cool to turn around and see a sea of bouncing, smiling, blissful, sweaty faces behind me at the BiL show.
