Ringo is an automated music-rating system/service, that you get to on email. you send mail to ringo@media.mit.edu with "join" in the body of the message. after awhile you get back a faq/helpfile describing the service. basically you rate a bunch of groups for Ringo, and it "learns" your musical tastes. then you can choose some other group, and it will try to predict how much you'll like or dislike that group. it does this, i gather, by comparing your (reported) musical tastes with those of other people who use Ringo. so if lots of people who like Lush also like Curve, and you say that you like Lush, it'll tell you that you'll probably like Curve too. Ringo's not perfect of course... first it doesn't know every artist, although i personally have only found a few it doesn't. i'm sure people here will find a lot more gaps. :) but, you can ask the ringo-sysops to add an artist, except this isn't really a solution because... the system can only make predictions for you on the basis of other people who use the system. so if no ectophiles use it, it won't have any basis to make predictions, and will say so. usually this is a small problem for me, but i think more "serious" ectophiles will run into this one more often. anyway i offer this FWIW, and apologize for my vvverbosity if it's old dead news. peace and smiles, veronica ------------------------------ From: Jacob Paul Leonard Date: Thu, 09 Mar 95 15:36:00 M Subject: Re: Annie Lennox's album in UK >Haven't bought it yet, though. Ah, happiness is a clean house, replenished pantry, and full underwear drawer. Yes, woj-n-meth have been domestic this weekend! We have also spent money. Amazing all the things you can cram into two days. Even e-mail, which is the task at hand. I'm listening to Nick Hill's show on WFMU, the Music Faucet as I type this -- and I do believe he's playing a Mary Margaret O'Hara song. Yay, Nick! :) I picked up tickets to see Victoria Williams at Town Hall in New York City on March 25th -- front row of the balcony, just left of center. This is a few seats over from where woj and I saw Loreena McKennitt last November, and I must say they're going to be awesome seats. I'm looking forward to this one. :) Then woj and I headed to Pier Platter Records in Hoboken, NJ, which has a huge vinyl selection (though not what woj was looking for, alas) and a lot of cool new and used CDs. I found Tori's UK Limited Edition "Winter" single, which leaves us only lacking the UK Limited Edition "Crucify" single (if anyone can point us to a source for that, don't hesitate to drop either of us a line :); a 3-song Brenda Kahn promo from the now-in-limbo _Destination Anywhere_ album; and a promo copy of Laurie Anderson's _The Ugly One With The Jewels_, which will see general release this Tuesday. It's really 72 minutes of the live recording of the performance of the "Stories From The Nerve Bible" show at Sadler's Wells Theater in London, and while it is officially spoken-word she provides a soundtrack to the entire thing using a few keyboards, and a lot of the background music is instantly recognizable as coming from past shows and _Bright Red/Tightrope_. The stories she tells are all from the book _Stories From The Nerve Bible_, and thus from the current multimedia "Nerve Bible" show. I'd say it's a must-have for any Laurie Anderson fan, no question. I'm glad I found a copy of it early. :> Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that we saw Happy's Prism thing on Friday night. :) Big huge thanks to Uncle Bob and his wife Wanda for their hospit- ality and munchies during the big event. brni and Linda were also there, and I must say, brni's Stick is pretty amazing. (*Chapman* Stick, folks, *Chapman* Stick. ;) I hope you figure out how to play it, brni -- it's really an amazing instrument. And Bob's new stereo system is truly a wonderful thing. We were testing Bass Notes Of Doom like they were going out of style - Anthony, did you feel any of them down there in Melbourne? On the way down in the car woj and I discovered and amazing one in Veda Hille's album that actually blew out one of his car speakers, and it almost caused some damage coming out of Bob's system, as well. ;> It's about 2:05 into track 5 -- if any of you have this album (as well you should, because it's very good) check it out and you'll see what I mean. The video itself was impressive. I had been expecting some cheezy, grainy public-access thing, but what we got was a professionally produced, extremely well done video of the Middle East show interspersed with interview bits in between songs. The show was only an hour long, and obviously some songs were left out. We got to see: Hold Me Collective Heart Dying Cohabitants All Things (Mia Ia Io) Feed The Fire Don't Want To Hear It Poetic Justice Save Our Souls Murder The interview bits consisted of Happy talking about her influences, how she got started, what it's like playing live, Philadelphia, and the Internet thing on the stage. The credits which rolled at the end prominently featured the Rhodeways address, the subscription address for ecto, and the URLs for both the Ecto Home Page and the Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia. Pretty cool. :) :) :) None of us in the viewing audience in Bob's living room could find anything wrong with either the video edit or the sound mix. I honestly have no clue what problem Happy/AG could possibly have had with the final product, and frankly I feel that their request that no copies be distributed to ectophiles is completely unjustified. Sigh. Anyway, it looks like I'll have to miss the next Happy live performance in Philly, as woj and I and a few other ectophiles have already made plans to see Philip Glass provide the soundtrack to a showing of Cocteau's "Beauty And The Beast" at Purchase College that night. That's what you get for making plans too far in advance, I guess. Once again, Sigh. Well, there are plenty of other venues in New York City where all of the above considerations don't add up to as much money passed directly on to the ticket-buyer. The Neil Simon Theater is on Broadway, which means that the ticket prices are going to be as high as $60 no matter what. If she were going to be giving the performance at Symphony Space or another place, I'm sure they could get tickets down to $30 for the most expensive seats. People will get to see her in Boston and Philadelphia and elsewhere for $20 or so -- why not her fans in New York City, her hometown? I just don't get it. Meantime, I'm trying to win tickets from WFUV, but I have a sinking feeling they already gave away the ones they had. Sigh. Paul Cohen opined: >The diehard fans will accept Mary singing for 10K Maniacs. They >already know John and Mary. But the general public? It remains to be seen. >Remember, Natalie wrote a substantial amount of their material and the sound >is bound to change. Which may be for the better, IMHO, but the marketplace >generally doesn't like a changing sound. Who gives a hoot about the marketplace?!? The music is what matters. The "general public" that embraced 10,000 Maniacs from _In My Tribe_ onward will probably pick Natalie's solo material over the new 10KM lineup in a taste test anyway. The "diehard fans" will more than accept Mary Ramsey as singer -- they will welcome it. From what I've heard, the guys in the band would much rather play smaller venues for people who really appreciate what they're doing than just be known as Natalie Merchant's Backup Band -- I believe that's the heart of the "artistic differences" cited as the reason for Natalie's departure from the band. Don't get me wrong -- I'm anxiously awaiting Natalie's solo effort, and will gladly see her live if/when she comes to my area. But I don't fault the remaining 9,999 Maniacs for sticking together and following their muse with- out her. John Lombardo got the band together, not Natalie Merchant, and the band has every right to the name without her presence on stage with them. So there. :) Gotta go give money to WFMU and support Nick's show. See y'all later! P.S. Hey -- I have searched *everywhere* for the current issue of B-Side, and wouldn't you know it this is the one time I can't find one. Zip. Nada to be found.
