Keep in mind that this is the band - Natalie + John & Mary, but what that implies to me is an extraordinary show in a much smaller venue than you could possibly see the Maniacs with Natalie in. For anyone that doesn't know, John Lombardo was an original Maniac, who left after the Wishing Chair. John and Mary (Mary Ramsey, vocalist and violaist(?)) have two albums out on Rykodisc, Victory Gardens and The Weedkiller's Daughter. Both are excellent. I've seen John and Mary twice, and they put on a great show. In fact, I've seen 10K Maniacs about 5 times, and J&M's shows rank up there with the best of the Maniacs shows. I expect the DC show to sell out, and will be grabing a ticket for myself next time I'm near the 9:30 club. If anyone wants me to pick them up a ticket, let me know. This is the first I had heard that they had decided to use th 10,000 Maniacs name. I had heard that they weren't going to do so. Personally I don't think it's a good idea. It will invite comparisons and a number of Merchant fans will decide not to accept the new band. Which is a shame because I think John & Mary are excellent. Musically they can probably pull off playing the old Maniacs material pretty well because Mary's voice is somewhat similar to Natalie's. After watching Echo and the Bunnymen's reunion without Ian McCulloch get completely rejected by the fans, even though the material was pretty strong doesn't leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling about how this will turn out. ________Paul Cohen________________pmcohen@netaxs.com________________________ Philadelphia, PA http://www.netaxs.com/~pmcohen/ ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo talk: pmcohen@slip-91.netaxs.com ------------------------------ From: THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE Date: Mon, 06 Mar 1995 22:17:11 -0500 (EST) Subject: Klaus Teil Eins Hi! Yet another week when I hardly have time to breathe, never mind take care of important things such as e-mail. I guess my priorities are getting skewed in the wrong direction lately... I'll have to do something about that soon. Tuesday night woj and I finally got to see Jewel play, though it was a very short set (no more than 30 minutes or so). Still, it was great, and all the trouble I had getting out of bed the next morning was worth it. :) Thanks to Mike Curry for hiding a chair from public view so that woj and I would have a place to sit. ;> The performance was at the Ludlow St. Cafe in NYC, which isn't the greatest of neighborhoods, and the place itself was quite a dive. It was also tiny -- there were about 5 tables and 4 booths, and then a small bar and that was it. There must have been 100 people packed in there to see Jewel (I guess in four weeks word gets around), and she got a really enthusiastic response. I wanted to bring her a bottle of Poland Spring water (and thus endear myself to her forever :), but I didn't get a chance to pick one up. She had another brand of water with her, and I chided her for not supporting Maine's economy, which she found rather amusing. Anyway, I don't know the names of any of her songs -- maybe Mike can help me out with her set list? Haven't gotten her album yet either, though I plan to remedy that soon (and I'll let woj tell you all about the little treasure he found in the used shop the other day). Sigh... looks like we've found another gem (heh), folks. Jewel and Milla in less than a year... I don't know if I'll be able to handle it. And now to Klaus, perchance to dream: Jeffy wrote about Jewel: >I wanted to post that it is not the *least* bit disappointing to me (who's >only seen her a couple of times...) and I'm ecstatic that it sounds so >good. Am I nuts, or do the more fully instrumented songs on the album remind one strongly of Frente!? Jacob Paul Leonard commented on Dar Williams: > Absulutely brilliant..."When I Was A Boy"...I have never had a song hit so >close to home...does anyone no more about her personally...I have a magazine >called "The Leak" I think it is called with a CD of various artist which I >just bought at The Nudes show and it has a small article...I want >more...please...see ya'll Last month in _Billboard_ there was a "Music To My Ears" feature on Dar Williams which provides a lot of good basic info on her, although there was one glaring error that I noticed (she went to Wesleyan UNIVERSITY, not Wesleyan "College", dammit). The feature is a regular page 3 thing, sorry, but I can't remember which issue I saw it in. And there was an interview with her in the January issue of Performing Songwriter, too. Here's what I know: Dorothy "Dar" Williams is from Connecticut (sorry, I can't find my frosh year student directory, so I can't tell you which town), and graduated in 1989 with a degree in Theater and Religion from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. After graduation she moved to Boston to figure out what she wanted to do, and started playing her music in coffeehouses etc. This got her noticed, and after appearing on a collection of Connecticut folk artists called _The Folk Next Door_ ("The Babysitter's Here"), in 1994 she independently put out her first CD, _The Honesty Room_, distributed by Waterbug Records and 1-800- PRIME-CD. This album has since been picked up by Razor And Tie Records, and has been reissued with some different mixes and a couple of previously unreleased tracks. Razor And Tie will also release her second album by the end of this year. I wasn't really paying attention my first year in college, but I have no recollection of Dar ever playing on campus or anything. I vaguely recall seeing her name in programs for the many theater productions I attended that year (Wesleyan students staged up to 36 performances a semester, most of them of very high caliber), I think as stage manager, though I may well be hallucinating that one. I do recognize a lot of the names mentioned in the album liner notes, though, and not just Katryna and Nerissa Nields, either. :) I hope this sheds some more light. I understand there is a mailing list for discussion of her music out there, though I don't know the e-dress... John Shepard added: >>Absulutely brilliant..."When I Was A Boy"...I have never had a song hit so >but it could get confusing to the Jane folks... No, I heard it >on World Cafe, and let's say I was smiling. An interesting take >on how happiness and society tend to conflict, particularly >where money stands to be made. Are you talking about the Dar Williams song "When I Was A Boy" here? If so, I have no clue what you're talking about with the money thing. I will say, though, that the first time I heard the song I had no idea who it was, and I smiled to myself thinking, "This is a song a Wesleyan student would write", and lo. I guess you'd have to have gone to the school to know what I mean by that (Valerie could probably elucidate a bit more on this one :), but hey. Ranjan wrote (from Singapore!!!): >am avoiding fun stuff for a while (my dad's recently passed away..) :( Sorry to hear that, Ranjan... >also, now that i have been a member of this group for some time, i think i >should try out ms rhodes. any recommendations for a first timer? (tower in >singapore happily keeps quite a collection of her stuff, the only one to!) ?!?!? Wow. I would recommend starting with RhodeSongs, since that's a good selection of her earlier work. If the more acoustic songs appeal to you better, then go to Rhodes I and Rhodes II. If the ones with more instrumentation sound better, then _Warpaint_ and _Building The Colossus_ would be good ones to start with. Or hell, get them all!!! :) Kiri informed: >A few weeks ago I went to a convention where Jane Yolen was a guest >speaker. She's a super cool writer, and if you have not read >anything by her I suggest you go out and do so... I second that emotion. Doubly so if she's doing a storytelling thing -- she is one of the premier storytellers in the country today. And, if you are a Sandman or Death fan, keep on the >look out, this has the potential of being a really good read. Oooh! Oooh! Oooh! Thanks for letting us know about this!!! In the meantime, folks, I would highly recommend that those of you with small children seek out her award-winning book _Owl Moon_ and any of the Commander Toad series for you and your kids, _The Devil's Arithmetic_ for young adult readers, and read _Sister Light, Sister Dark_ and _Briar Rose_ for yourselves. Brilliant stuff, all of it. And the books in her Harcourt Brace imprint series for young adults are all primo, too. And to Aaron, who came out of the woodwork to post a thinly veiled evil suggestion which I have just accidentally deleted: It's been a long time since I've had the opportunity to do this, sir, but: Ahh, that felt good. ;> Ray Misra opined: >Does anyone other than me think that Neil's best work is already >light-years behind him, and he's turned into the gothic Chris Claremont? Um, no. Sorry. Mitch mused: >When I wrote yesterday's post, it somehow slipped my mind (probably due to >the system being down until late in the day) that the day before, the >Republican Party had nominated a clown (that's his day job, or at least it >was) as its candidate for mayor of Chicago. You suppose that this is >homeostasis in action, after the events of last November? Yes, people, truth *is* stranger than fiction. Sigh. >Anyone catch Tori on the Grammies last night? Yes. Is it just me, or was she either a.) sick to her stomach or b.) really stoned? Speaking of the Grammies, what a colossal waste of time. I was impressed to see so many good performers on the bill (Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Melissa Etheridge, and k.d. lang (though we had to put up with Tony Bennett on the stage at the same time :P), but there were so many live performances, there wasn't any time to actually give out any awards. If I hear the name Sheryl Crow one more time, I am going to just lose it. Her performance sucked, too. And after suffering through 2 hours of this we find out that the award for Best Alternative Album was presented before the broadcast even began, and went to Green Day (gack) to boot. Thpth. It was the first time I had watch- ed the Grammies since about 1984, and I think that will do me for the rest of this millenium. What a crock. Feh. My friend read me a quote by Jeanine Garofalo from the latest issue of Mirabella Magazine (I have no idea what she was doing with a copy of it either, and was afraid to ask) in which she totally cut on the Grammys. It went something like, "'And the award for Song Of The Year goes to: Bryan Adams!' 'Thank you very much. As I stand here with this award for my multi- million selling song and think about all the musicians out there who are working their butts off and making truly quality music but getting nothing for it, I realize that I'm just really, really average. This is an award for being average. Thank you again.'" (That was extremely paraphrased, but you get the idea. :) John Shepard commented: >It was a waste of time and tape. Oh, come on -- I'll treasure the memory of Annie Lennox in the sequined Minnie Mouse Of Death outfit forever. :) And Liz Phair totally fucking up her stint at presenting an award (though admittedly, Adam Sandler didn't help at all), as well as Chris Connell of Soundgarden starting off their acceptance speech for the Best Metal Album award with, "All right, we're not leaving the stage until you can all look us in the eye and tell us we're metal. Come on!" were both priceless moments too. You gotta admit at least that. John also inquired: >>> Happy had put her hair into pigtails, which actually looked pretty good >>> (better on her than on Sarah McLachlan ;). As she went by I said hello, and > >Is that possible? :-) Yes. Doesn't take much, either. The first time I saw Sarah on the Fumbling Tour (almost a year ago now, eeep!) she had her hair in pigtails, and I had to actually bite my tongue to keep from yelling out, "Where's Toto?" >BTW, does anyone know Latin? Whoever can translate the >sentence "the beautiful woman who does not exist" to Latin will >a) be my friend, and b) receive a copy of the IUPU lit mag I >need the sentence for, as the title of a drawing I'm submitting. Hmmm. I'll give it a go, though run it by a Classicist first to make sure I didn't mess it up too much: Pulchra femina qui non existit. There you go. Enjoy. Uncle Bob reported: >Friday, March 10 > >10PM (PSM) MIDDLE EAST PRESENTS... >Singer-songwriter Happy Rhodes performs. >(Time approximate after basketball.) Cool! woj and I will be there with VCR and cables in hand. Would it be possible for us to tape the X-Files first? We only have one VCR, see, and that's on at 9, see, and, well... :} Jane_Fan contributed about Pete and Maura Kennedy: >I bought their CD "River of Fallen Stars" as well, and it's been glued to >my CD player... _Wall of Death_ (a song about a carnival ride where one >tries to overcome centrifugal force while mounted on a speeding motorcycle) >really caught my ear at the show, and it's quite nice on the CD as >well--the harmony between Maura and Pete's voice is amazing.... Yeah, woj found the album for something like $4 this week, and we're really enjoying it *much* better than their live performance. Some great stuff there, definitely. >The combination of two good voices and two killer guitarists makes this a >must-buy, IMHO.... Amen. :) woj also picked up Mary Karlzen's _Yelling At Mary_, which I am hearing for the first time as I type (sounds pretty good so far), and he also got the new Sara Craig album, which on one listen is still resonating in my brain. Wow. chandra responded to Vickie: >thanks for rambling. Seconded. >i'm really appalled at the greg lougainis thing, and the fact >that somewhere along the way he became the bad guy. that didn't happen >with magic johnson. hmmmm, wonder why? Gee, I don't know. Maybe because Magic is heterosexual, and in society's eyes it therefore *can't* be his fault that he was infected, he is definitely the victim here, whereas Greg Louganis is gay, therefore in society's eyes he deserves what he gets? I'll stop now before I really get going on this... makes my blood boil, it does. >i really continue to fear that >at some point we will go on some sort of nationwide witch hunt for people >with aids, starting with doctors and apparently sports figures, and >ending up with no one having any privacy or dignity left. That day may be closer than you think. Remember what the press did to Arthur Ashe? Jeffy said: >And it turns out that the box office at Lisner is a Ticketmaster, and >therefore even if you're buying tix to a Lisner show, you still get reamed >with the service charge. $4/ticket in this case. (there's even a sign on >the wall reminding you that it's a ticketbastard, so "service charges will >apply to tickets purchased for performances at Lisner Auditorium"). Oh man oh man oh man. I can't even express how pissed off that makes me... argh!!! >Is there *any* way around these schmucks, short of missing shows I'm dying >to see? Doesn't look like it. @&*!# I should probably mention at this point that if anyone is planning to see the Nerve Bible shows in New York City, either start saving now or just forget it. It's at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway, which means that the cheapest seats are $45 (prices range from there to $65). Gee, now I'm REALLY glad I got to see the show already! It's a sad day when performance art is priced way outside of the reach of people who really want to see it and who can really appreciate it. Sigh. To go off on a tangent, I finally tracked down a copy of Laurie's book _Stories From The Nerve Bible_. I had to order it straight from the publisher because not one bookstore in the tri-state area had it nor was interested in stocking it, and even Harper Collins had it on backorder when I called, but they finally got the new printing in this week. What great stuff. If you're even remotely interested in the thought processes and life experiences behind Laurie Anderson's work, this book is for you. I find her comments about "selling out" especially ironic in light of the ticket prices for her NYC shows, but hey. Back to Jeffy: >Hey, Val Nozick...if you're reading this, wanna >go? You'll still be in town, won't you? Or if you get a ticket to >*another* great show a day letter, will that just ensure that there's no >way you'll see either? :-) Trust me, the latter will be the case. ;> Speak of the demon: >I don't recall if it was mentioned here or not, but Kirsty MacColl is playing >in the DC area (Va. actually) on March 17. So be you a lurker or a regular >poster, if you can get to the DC area, you're invited. I'd try, but I'm sure something will come up to prevent you from going... >What could be better than green beer and Kirsty? Hmm. Actually, I can think of a few things... ;> Steve VanDevender retorted: >The reason that most groups desire some limited topic of >discussion is to allow readers and potential readers more ability >to read material that they find interesting and, more >importantly, to AVOID reading material that they are not >interested in. > ... >Sending this form >letter to Ecto shows disrespect for the right of people to choose >what they read. That's why the "delete" key was invented, Steve. I use it liberally (yes, even while reading ecto posts) -- maybe you should give it a try. I chose not to read Ray's cross-post, hit "del", and it was out of my life forever. I think that the fans who got into the Maniacs when they got really popular will wait for Natalie's solo album to come out and will go gaga over that, while those who have been enjoying John And Mary's music will go gaga over their collaboration with 10KM. It wasn't until a week and a half later that I realized it was Frente's "Labor of Love." The resemblence is not particularly pronounced on the band version, but very noticeable when it's just Jewel and her guitar. You never know your luck in a big city ... or even a little one. On a completely unrelated note, has anyone seen the footage of the OneAustralia yacht sinking in the America's Cup race ... ? Really freaky stuff. I don't know why but the vision of a boat sinking always sends shivers up my spine. Oh well, it looks as though either San Diego or somewhere in New Zealand will be holding the next cup ... With all the talk of Revvie (with whom I never interacted), and the expression of the group loss, I find myself reminded of the discussion of the nature of the group that went on, and while I feel part of the group for being on the list, my lack of access to irc seems to alienate me from a vibrant community there. 'Tis indeed a shame.
