I've seen Jewel perform about 15 times, but last night's performance was definitely the best. The sound quality was excellent, and the intimate Hahn theater was the ideal setting. I went to the second show--it was supposed to start at 10:00 p.m. It didn't get going until about 10:20. The atmosphere was like a family reunion--a lot of the old regulars from the Inner Change days getting together again, many for the first time in a while. Jewel was in great form. She came out and picked up her water bottle, and then looked at the audience. Inwardly I groaned and thought to myself, "She's not going to give us the sponsering spiel again." Instead, she just said, "You know--I still haven't been sponsored." She started by playing songs strictly from the album. Finally she said, "You know--I'm supposed to stick to the album, but you guys know me better than that." She then launched into a beautiful new track she wrote while in D.C. called Perfectly Clear. And then did another new song that sounded like the sequel to Daddy. She then did some of her older tracks that didn't make it to the album, the Swedish Lullaby, 501 Beauty Queen, etc. Then Steve Poltz of the Rugburns came on stage with her and they did an acoustic version of Silver Lining. It was great. Then the rest of the band (The Rugburns) came on stage and for the first time I got to see Jewel perform with a full band. Before they started, she said--"And they call me folk"-- and launched into the rockingest version of "Who Will Save Your Souls", followed by "I Was Meant for You" (or is it You Were Meant for Me?--I can never remember.) Just when I thought they were really rocking, Jewel said--"Oh boy, now we get to do my favorite song that Steve and I have written together. It's so pretty." Well, let's just say she was being ironic. It's titled "I Drove by My Old Lover's Mother's House" and while it starts quietly and beautifully, it turns into one of the rockingest tunes I've heard in a long time. I felt like I was at a Hole concert. And Jewel was wailing on electric guitar-- with Robert Driscoll of the Rugburns doing some incredible guitar solos. They then did a great punk version of "My Own Private God's Gift to Women", and finally wrapped up the Rugburns set with my personal favorite "Daddy, She's a Goddess". I'll tell you one thing--don't let the mellow album, or her acoustic performances fool you. The girl can rock. After the Rugburns exited, Jewel came back and finished the show solo, performing Angel Standing By and Amen--a great ending to the album and a great ending to the show. After the show she got about a 10 minute standing ovation during which she stood on stage and tried to get us to stop, saying "Stop it guys you're embarassing me!" She is incredibly tickled with her success--and she related driving back from L.A. one night with a friend, listening to the Top 9 at 9:00 (a viewer call-in program that ranks the top 9 songs of the day). She said she was sitting there listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and all the other heavy-hitters and getting depressed, thinking "God--I'm never going to be able to compete". Then of course, they announced her as the #1 song ("Save our Souls was #1 for about 6 weeks") and she said she almost flipped. She said the friend she was driving with still as bruises on her leg, where Jewel was hitting her as she was screaming "Oh my God, that's me! that's me!" She also mentioned that the song, "I'm Sensitive" that appears on the album, she never expected to be on the album. She said she wrote it the day they did the recording at the Inner Change, and thought she'd play it just to try it out--I guess it it sounds a little rough, it's understandable. It was the first time it was performed. It was an incredibly fun show. I didn't find out the exact dates of her tour for this upcoming month, but she's going to be doing shows in Chicago, Columbus, Toronto, and Detroit--so if you're anywhere near those areas--go! BTW, Jeff W.--Wally said he'd call you today with the full tour details. Neal sent me a copy of the Jewel cassette today, which means it won't be hear until Monday or Tuesday of next. Well, I just couldn't wait that long. Went to the local Best Buy, just to see if they had "pieces of you", and sure enough. One copy. $9.33. Well, at that price... I immediately snatched it (since I wasn't sure how many Des Moinesites will be waiting in line for it), took it to work, and CRAP! No CD player. Well, a co-worker (and friend) of mine has a CD-Player, so I snuck into his cube, and plopped it in. Got completely through "Who Will Save Your Soul", and skimmed the next 5 tracks. One word: Impressive! I like! This stuff is great. And that from only the first six tracks! Can't wait to get home (might have to leave work early :-)) and play it. From beginning to end. At least once, before I tape it for the car (I don't believe in CD-players for cars - another topic). Buy this disc! You'll be glad you did. Oh yes, I still plan on listening many times to the cassette that Neal provides. My impatience got the best of me. Thanks publicy to Neal. I'll provide a more in-depth review after I had a chance to listen to it, and soak it in. And it turns out that the box office at Lisner is a Ticketmaster, and therefore even if you're buying tix to a Lisner show, you still get reamed with the service charge. $4/ticket in this case. (there's even a sign on the wall reminding you that it's a ticketbastard, so "service charges will apply to tickets purchased for performances at Lisner Auditorium"). Is there *any* way around these schmucks, short of missing shows I'm dying to see? On a vaguely related note (the note being "tickets I have or want"), yes, Neal, I did see the posting on Ecto about Vic Williams at the Birchmere (the night after Sarah/Paula Cole! Eep!). And yes I'm interested. Do you know how much tickets are? Hey, Val Nozick...if you're reading this, wanna go? You'll still be in town, won't you? Or if you get a ticket to *another* great show a day letter, will that just ensure that there's no way you'll see either? :-) Jeff (feeling a wee bit bitter) |Jeffrey C. Anyway, I was reading an interview with Greek singer Haris Alexiou, with whom some of you are familiar, where she describes the songs of her latest album (Odos Nefelis 88 - a street address), which she wrote herself. She mentions that when she was in Moscow in the early 80s she heard a Kate Bush song which she fell in love with. Later she found the album and 10 years later she wrote a song inspired by it. I haven't heard Haris' new album, so I don't know which song she is refering to, but I will definitely post more about it when I get it. By the way, Eleftheria Arvanitaki (of HGP1 fame) has a new album out, where she sings songs by Armenian songwriter Ara Dinkjan. The CD is wonderful and worth checking out, for ectophiles who enjoy non-english lyrics and world-music sounds. I recently found a source for greek music in the US, which does mail order and sells CDs for $21.99 (cheaper than they cost in Greece). Call 1-800-GREEK-22 for more info. They carry anything that is available in Greece. With that little piece of propaganda, I will end my post. I thought I'd comment a little about the concert so that you can get a feel for how it was to be there. First of all, Paula Cole not only warmed up the audience for Sarah, but heated the audience to the point of hysteria. I have to say, my past assessment on Paula Cole was strictly based on her single and her work on Peter Gabriel's album, "Secret World Live." I was delightedly surprised by Paula's performance. Not only was she vocally incredible, her stage presence was very reminescent of how Sarah used to be when she played smaller venues. I don't want to ruin it for those of you who are planning to go to the concert(s), so I'll deter myself from telling you all the details of what she said regarding each song. However, I will say that Mr. Gabriel's album was VERY restrictive of Paula's singing abilities. Left to sing her own material, Paula ruled the stage with passionate singing and synchronized drum beats that kept perfect rhythm with her right arm motions and toe tappings. Sarah's performance was nothing short of spectacular. However, I think the set was poorly arranged. They tried too hard to make it different from the last couple of times they came through. Instead of having a rock hard beginning like the previous times, Sarah's crew played a series that seemed to cresendo at a moderated pace. Therefore, the zenith of the concert was the end (which isn't bad by any means, but it could have been better if they had turned the wheels sooner...). After seeing Sarah in concert for the second time, I cannot comment more. Any praise would fall short of expressing the experience that I've had tonight. How can I even begin to try to decifer my human emotions in a language so limiting? I got a chance to speak to Cathy at the concert. She informed me that Sarah did indeed have three very special guests. (Billy Crystal, Tori Amos, and Stevie Nicks if you already didn't know). She also gave me some news about a video compilation. If there is going to be one, the EARLIEST we should expect it is this coming fall. Well, here's the promised set. It's from memory, so if anyone remembers something different, please feel free to comment. I have a fairly good memory for these things, so it should be pretty much on the mark...
