I don't have a whole lot to add to the Bottom Line write-ups. Mainly I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting everyone and I had great time. My one regret is I didn't pick up Barbara Kessler's disc when I had the chance, although I will keep an eye open for it. Oh, and I think besides "Talk" Happy's other required Yes album was "Going For the One." Now, if only someone could convince her to do a full-length show at the BL. Maybe I'll do a demo at the next east coast ecto gathering... Ah, fuzzy drinks and glowing pickles, who could ask for more? I've been trying to remember where I first heard about "the pickle trick." I'm pretty sure it was either a Mr. Wizard segment on Letterman, or something on talk.bizarre. [Electric meat] > I'm putting that one on your tab, sir... ;> That would be the thwack tab? Hey, don't blame me, blame Kenny Everett (who I'm pretty sure nobody will remember but me). And, on an even less related note, "Thwack Tab" would make for a pretty good band name. Right now, the fog over the Hudson river is so thick that it looks like nowhere from "Yellow Submarine." Some recent purchases waiting to be heard: "Geek The Girl" (Lisa Germano), "Martinis & Bikinis" (Sam Philips), "O Seasons O Castles" (Katell Keineg), and Jane's "The Speckless Sky," which I think pretty much completes my collection of her major releases. I also picked up Emily Bezar's "Grandmother's Tea leaves" and have heard it a few times. Not what I expected, and more experimental than my usual fare, but I find I'm often tempted to pop it into my walkman and have another listen, so that must be a good sign. Anyone else watch "Homicide: Life on the Streets?" Someone on staff has good taste in music - previous weeks have included Peter Gabriel, the Pretenders, and this week Tori's "Crucify" made an appearance. A few weeks ago there was a song by some female vocalist I didn't recognize. I'd love to know who she was, anyone have any idea? Meth again: > Hey, did anybody happen to be watching eMpTV this evening around 7:50 PM > EST? I caught a few minutes here and there. Rod was the welcoming voice at 2 a.m., the person who would always give a warm hello when you needed it. He was an important part of the #ecto community, and will be greatly missed. It's very easy online to forget that the typist on the other end of the phone line is a living, 3-dimensional person rather than a personality with fingers. And at times like this I'm struck by how well you can get to know someone online, but never know them at all. Rod's death is something I know everyone on #ecto and ecto feels deep inside them. My mind goes back to the recent discussion of whether ecto is a group. It's a hard way to learn it, but I think I finally have my answer. *hugs* to everyone who wants one. love, valerie ------------------------------ From: iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 15:03:01 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: REPORT: Happy At The Bottom Line Meth says: > Happy had put her hair into pigtails, which actually looked pretty good > (better on her than on Sarah McLachlan ;). It's been a long day, and I just don't feel like removing clauses anymore. How straight is Tori's hair? Hmm...this is quickly turning into the 'hair' article. Not much of a surprise really if you know me and my obsession over hair. But anyhow, I have to agree with meredith. It's going to be _great_ to see Tori at the Grammys this week. Pravatiner" Date: Tue, 28 Feb 95 18:10:24 EST Subject: Virtual community and real death My dealings with Rod were limited to a query on the availability of some recording, and an exchange regarding Laura Nyro. I recall him mentioning on one occasion on the list that #ecto had recently saved his life, and on another occasion that he was going offline for awhile for reasons of ill health. My sympathies, of course, go to those of us whose contact with him was less attenuated. This, the first known death in the ecto community, is reminiscent to me of what happened last year on the cybermind list, when one of the founders died suddenly, only a few months after the list started. The eulogies for a man most of the posters had never even met were voluminous; interestingly, months after the thread was played out it started up again, spontaneously, though the second round didn't last nearly as long as the first. The bottom line, I suppose, is that a virtual community is a community--a group, if you want to put it that way--in every sense of the word. Electronic social relationships are as real as ftf ones. It's too bad that virtual life had to meet real death to drive the point home. I picked up Jewel's CD "Pieces of You" at The Wherehouse, where its on sale for $10.99. Wow! I was so excited. But also a little disappointed. The track selection is great--including one of my favorites--These Foolish Games, which I didn't expect, and after one listen, is probably my favorite track. But on the whole, it doesn't quite capture the essence of Jewel. The packaging seems much too happy for the content--which seems way too serious. And one of my other favorites, You Were Meant for Me, came out sounding lifeless, when it was so fun in concert. "Don't" is also a highlight--mainly because its done exactly as it is in concert. Plus the live tracks are a treat, not something you usually see on a debut album, but they help give a better picture of the real Jewel. And I think the added background vocals really help out on Angel Standing By. But this is all after one listen, so don't take any of it too seriously. I like it, I'm sure I'll play it to death, and I recommend each of you go buy it and go see her in concert whenever you get the chance. B-Side Magazine Volume 9, #1 Feb 95 / Mar 95 Page 54 HAPPY RHODES Building The Colossus (Aural Gratification) Technically, this is Happy Rhodes' third CD. She really has nine releases out, comprised of material she had recorded before her first CD, _Warpaint_, came out in 1991. If you become addicted to this artist you may need to haunt a few stores before you're totally satisfied. Somewhere along the way Happy decided she wasn't going to merely be a vocalist. She wasn't going to be a normal singer songwriter, because she has the voice of a goddess and songs most musicians would barter their souls away for. Happy questions, confronts, and demands all from her songs, curving her conquering voice around her captivating music with a range that flies from a husky baritone to clear soprano. Her music moves from playful jazz phrasings to all out rock and roll swing in perfect compliment to her fascinating voice. _Building The Colossus_ follows in the path of _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ and then improves on it: graced by sharper recording, the album sparks with wit and breathtaking talent, making it a must for those who adore the complexity of the female voice. She's coming for you whether you want her to or not. But once you experience Happy's magic, you'll be far more than just happy! Also, I'm not sure about this, but it seems to me that she left out the verse in Daddy about the Cosby show and her boyfriend. Anyway we were in a session with about 4 other people and Jane, and she did a reading of some stuff that is going to be coming out soon. She read a couple cool stories, but by far the most entertaining and interesting for me was a short story titled "Godmother Death". The story is based on Neil Gaiman's Sandman character Death. Suffice it to say Jane had Death pegged perfectly. This story will be published -we hope- with other stories that Neil has asked authors to write about his characters. Godmother Death is terrific, if you ever get a chance to see Jane Yolen do a reading, ask her to read it! And, if you are a Sandman or Death fan, keep on the look out, this has the potential of being a really good read. kiri Ch`i mi gun d`ail an t-`aite 's an d'rugadh mi Cuirear orm f`ailt' 's a' ch`anain a thuigeas mi Gheibh mi ann aoidh agus gr`adh 'n uair ruigeam Nach reicinn air thunnaichean `oir Kirstin A.
