There's a swarm of ectophiles planning to descend upon The Bottom Line in fewer than 48(!) hours, so here's the plan (Jeffy, consider this an official reply to your note asking about same :): My wonderful pseudo-ectophile friend Shura purchased the tickets on Saturday, and she would appreciate exact change when you pay her back the $12.50 you each owe her. :) The Bottom Line is located on the corner of West 4th St. and Mercer in the Village (it's basically on the NYU campus, and is less than a block from the Tower Records on West 4th and Broadway). There is usually parking to be found on Mercer somewhere. If anyone coming from out of town would like to get more specific directions, mail woj@remus.rutgers.edu since I'm bad at these things. The tickets are for the 10:30 show. Doors open at 10. I would recommend getting there early, since such a huge group will only be able to stay together if it hits the door while the club is still empty (at the Bottom Line, someone shows you to a table). The current suggestion for dinner is to go somewhat up-and-crosstown to 23rd and 7th, the site of the Zig Zag Bar And Grill. Why there, you ask? "Well I went down to the Zig Zag, Yeah, that's the Zig Zag Bar and Grill..." - Laurie Anderson, "Beautiful Red Dress" Since most of the people in the group are Laurie fans this should suffice, no? Shura is checking to see if they take reservations, since it will probably be crowded on a Friday night. Spontaneity will have to do if this falls through, but we thought it would be a neat place to go if we can. Any alternate suggestions would be appreciated. Anyway, we plan to get there around 8:30 or so. Right now the size of the goup that I know of is 11 -- anybody else want to join us? For our out-of-towners, crash space is available at casa woj-n-meth in lovely Boonton, NJ, but be warned, we do have a cat (I'm really sorry about that, Jeffy! :/) and we already have 5 people signed up for the living room floor. :) So that's the deal. Hope to see a whole bunch of you on Friday night!!!!! Well, it is related to smoe (situation marvellous, ovulation excellent) and of course to nibbles and nubbles (which I prefer to nobles and no belles, and which go with no belts). The official definition is an identifying mark on the ear of an animal; or any distinctive marking; or to reserve or set aside for a special purpose. So, discerning lovers earmark their lovers for later "consumption", sort of like marking their territory, but gentler than scratching on the 9-ball. And of course there are many ways to make a silk purse, especially this year, so don't be a bore, make up a few definitions. Earrings give me tin-itus. David Dalton P.S. This time we each had brought a friend along, and we had a second "row" table. I'm now officially Very Impressed with Jewel. While I still think she tends toward the clever, witty lyric instead of reaching for something more eloquent/elegant, I'll readily acknowledge that overall her songs are more meaningful than I had thought after last week's show. I think I might have liked the sound system a little better last week, but I think Jewel was in better form tonight. She played most of the songs she played last week, with a few substitutions, and told many of the same stories. Overall, a wonderful show, and the friend I took is also hooked on her. We both bought Jewel's "bootleg" tape and are anxiously awaiting the release of the album next week. If you still have the opportunity to catch her (which I believe would mean Boston on Friday?), I strongly recommend it. Catch Jewel in a teensy venue while you still can... Jeff |Jeffrey C. How can you think that I do not welcome lurkers and new readers? Everyone who reads ecto is an ectophile and that's OUR definition. Some hints for the future: read the posts carefully and think "does s/he REALLY mean what s/he said or did I get something wrong?" before you offend someone. It's not easy for a non-English speaking person to explain in detail what one means. I often don't find the right words, but if something sounds harsh that wasn't my intention. I found the review to be an example of some of the negative reactions that innovative, personal, and heartfelt music sometimes tends to inspire in certain people. Quoting from the article: - ----- {NEGATIVITY ALERT ON} "Uh-oh. Someone told Laurie Anderson her work was significant, and she believed it." [...] "It's just that I expected whatever she did to have some kind of unifying theme, some spine, and there isn't one. It's just Anderson, all wrapped up in her self-importance, for 2 1/2 hours of flash and trash." [...] "Whether MTV-style videos, performed live, are art is debatable. But even those who'd argue that they are must concede that this is an art of quick hits and instant images. It doesn't encourage sustained thought, and I can't see wasting much sustained thought on it. Anderson sure didn't" "And she doesn't comb her hair, either." - -------- {NEGATIVITY ALERT OFF} Well, I LIKE Laurie Anderson. After reading this review which had virtually NOTHING positive to say, I concluded that this concert must have provided some cognitive dissonance so extreme that the reviewer had to react in anger. Especially the comment on her grooming at the end! I've never heard that said about, for example, Pearl Jam or Mick Jagger... So I had only two chances at tickets for shows in my area, and the Santa Cruz show had a couple of seats available. As I had suspected, virtually everything stated in the review was dead wrong.... It was an excellent show, and not like Empty-Vee at all (except that visuals were involved ;-). She did many songs off of the "Bright Red" CD, which I ran out and bought (and almost finished listening to) right before the show. Her commentary and stories were delightful, providing insight into many of her songs and making them much more personal than they come across on the CD. Some of the stories were so great that I wished I could just capture the whole concert on video and see it over and over.... One of the more disturbing pieces in the concert was the "Night In Baghdad" song, which although the subject was the "Persian Gulf War", was quite beautiful musically -- such cognitive dissonance was quite uncomfortable, and some guys in the men's bathroom were mentioning their discomfort with this as well. It did, however, achieve its intended effect (IMHO). She also told the story about traveling through international airports with her gear, and having to demonstrate it for security people who were suspicious that it may be illegal or terrorist equipment. One of the things she was asked to explain / demo was a filter which made her voice sound like the voice of control or "big brother" -- it sounded kind of "Darth Vader"-ish. So she picked up the mike (with the filter) and continued to explain the situation, how the guards would gather around and listen to her equipment, how she would always be asked at many opportunities to demo the stuff... and they would inevitably ask "and so why do find it necessary to speak like the 'voice of control'" and she says (in the spooky voice) (paraphrased wildly) ... "as I looked around at the CIA and the uniforms and radios and machine guns and police dogs and surveillance equipment and said, 'TAKE A WILD GUESS'"... I came away liking Laurie Anderson's music in a much stronger and deeper way than ever before. It made her seem very real and personal, to the point that I'd only known less than half of it through the CDs. They were selling T-shirts at the concert, and instead of the cities of the tour on the back, there was a list of world wide web addresses. The seller told me they were sites that Laurie found interesting. I was wondering if anyone who picked up one of these T-shirts would mind posting these web addresses?
