Hi! My twin sister Ivy is doing a research paper for her social psychology class about groups and the Internet. She is comparing mailing list groups (like Ecto) to her textbook's definition of a "group" which is as follows: Group: Two or more individuals in face to face interaction, each aware of his/her membership in the group, each aware of the others who belong to the group, and each aware of their positive interdependence as they strive to achieve mutual goals. Do you feel like Ecto is a group by this definition? If so, tell how come you think so. If not, tell why not. How could the above definition be changed to include groups like Ecto? Ivy (who is sitting beside me as I type) thanks you very much in advance for any insight you can offer. :) Holly P.S. "Treasure" is THE BEST Cocteau Twins ever. Well, actually you *have* got the wrong idea: "Eddi Reader" is Eddi Reader's latest release (from 1994); I have no idea why this title was chosen, though, as it is somewhat confusing... Now that you've heard "Eddi Reader", you should really treat yourself to "Mirmama" which is probably even better - it's not easy to find, but somebody from the UK (Steve Fagg?) had access to a source of (cheap even!) mirmamas... [Feeling slightly possessive about Eddi Reader, as I had the pleasure of introducing Vickie to her music... ;-)] - -+- Irvin mentions a Chinese cover tape: > the tape also featured a couple of covers as well, one i thought > might have been another cocteau twins song, and one that was a > cranberries song. all in chinese...might have to submit that to the > happy gift project next time that roles around.... Please do, it sounds intriguing! - -+- Steve pleads: > Anybody know of any dates scheduled in Europe? Especially the UK, > especially London! ;-) Me too, me too! :-) > *** We tried to add it all up and got merely sunrise. *** > *** Try putting that in a letter to someone in exile. *** Hmm, you should all remember to look for Neile's new book of poems: It's very nicely done, and even though I've only had time to read a few of the poems, they're looking good too! - -+- Neal asks: > So I was wondering, is the sound usually worse up near the stage, > and better in the middle of the club? Are there people out there > who prefer to hang out somewhere other than front and center, and > what advantages do they see to that? I generally aim for a position midway between the mixing board/sound tower and the stage, perhaps a little closer to the stage in smaller venues - I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the visuals to get a better sound... Oh, and centering is usually very important... I try to avoid getting closer than third row even in small venues - the sound too often breaks up closer than that, I think. I violated this principle just this Thursday, though, as I was sitting in the second row for a concert with a new Danish band - the reason being that the venue is a small cafe with only two rows in front of the stage! :-) I missed out on the Voix Bulgares concert in the Copenhagen Vocal Festival on Friday - I was too tired to take a chance last-minute tickets... :-( I also missed the opening concert on Thursday (it collided with my piano lessons), but took revenge by attending the concert mentioned above. The band, Helena & Roxanna, is a new girl duet - they are not yet ready for Ecto promotion, but their voices are pretty good; they mostly play covers (quite a bit from Pink Floyd and David Bowie) but also had a selection of their own music. - -+- Dirk commented on the latest Maire Brennan album: > The weekest song is the first one, IMO, a pop song with an accordion. > And I must agree that the Joni Mitchell cover is slightly out of place, > here. But the rest of the album is what we have expected from Maire. Uh-hu, that's Martin O'Conner's accordion-play you're criticizing - he's a mean accordionist! :-) I'll admit, though, that it took me a few listens to get to like this album - it seemed too bland at first... Also, it should be noted that David Spillane appears on this album as well... - -+- Anders saw Heather Nova is Stockholm (welcome to another Nordic Ectophile!): > The sound wasn't very good until after three or so songs when they > cranked up Heather and the Cello which made all the difference. She > did last four songs acoustic. I saw her in concert a few weeks ago; it was a bit of a disappointment, though - mainly because of the audience: At the scheduled time for the concert only about 10 people had arrived (in a venue with a capacity of about 600 people...); about an hour later they had managed to get a somewhat bigger audience, but most people were obviously not very interested in the band... :-( The best parts were the more-or-less acoustic songs (though these suffered even more from the audience's nattering) and, as you say, the cello was pretty good (and I'll admit to getting a little distracted by the cellist, btw. ;-)). - -+- Enough for now! I'm changing jobs at the moment, btw, so my future email address will be brage@delta.dk. My old addresses should work for quite a while, though... Jens P. Brage | Why don't they give me tape? In the first case, mutual goals are external, being predefined such as citizens of a given state, or Businessmen in need of a weekly luncheon. Of course, everything is quite expensive, but if I get the chance to get back there, I can check on the Tori single. In case anyone else is interested, they had 3 different Tori boots, some of live shows and some of oddities from various places, including KROQ appearances. That included the first take radio cover of the Cure's Lovesongs, and 10 minutes of what I would suspect is painful babble on Lovelines. THey had a number of Kate discs I'd never seen, including the This Woman's Work B-sides discs as single discs ($25 each, with some post-box songs added to one), and two additional This Woman's WOrk discs. One (volume 3) had the b-sides and remixes of stuff from The Red Shoes, and another was called This Woman's Work Live. The packaging did not look as nice as the original 2 volumes. Oh, on the Tori disc, I had noticed they had the Australian (?) 2 disc Under The Pink set, which had UTP on one disc and all the import b-sides on another, including the ones your friend is looking for. It seems a good deal for someone who doesn't have all the stuff, but not so good if you are only missing a few of the songs. I think it ran for $40.
