I subscribed to Ecto because I like female voices and good songwriting and I found the idea of a flame-free mailing list appealing (and because of the publicity Ecto get on Gaffa, too (Hi Vickie! :-) )). I'm not disappointed at all! A place where people speak of the music I like in a friendly manner, that's a dream, I should have subscribed earlier! Well up to the Happy content now. I have 3 Happy CDs now (Thanks Uli!). They are Warpaint, Ecto and Rhodesongs. My favourite is Ecto, with "Ecto" and "When the rain came down" being my favorites songs but the thing I prefer in Happy is her voice. She really has an incredible voice, with a great range and she puts emotion in it. I can't get enough of it! Her songwriting is not bad either. But I suppose you know that already, so I'll stop rambling. :-) I just have 2 questions : What does the word "Ecto" mean? (perhaps that's a stupid question...) What does she say at the end of Rhodesongs (on the 17th track) ? Thank you all for this great list, - -- Yves. ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Tue, 14 Feb 1995 08:09:59 -0800 (PST) Subject: Jann Arden Just a quick note about her. She's from Calgary, Alberta (Canada) and has two discs out--_Time for Mercy_ and a new one just released in Canada, but not yet anywhere else, as far as I know. I find her music too smooth and mainstream pop for me, but friends of mine and my mother love her. I really wanted to like her because I'm generally prejudiced in favour of Canadian artists, being a Canadian in exile, but I couldn't bring myself to purchase her disc upon repeated listens. Your mileage may vary. I think she could be a big hit with the ecto folk who like softer pop. For what it's worth, I listened to Kerri Anderson once at a cd store and came to the same decision, though with less listening to go by. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Tue, 14 Feb 1995 11:13:22 -0500 Subject: Cranes/Idaho Last Friday I headed in to DC to see the Cranes/Idaho show at the 9:30 club, famed dark pit in the DC club scene. Probably the most excitement of the evening occured as I headed for the club. As I approached F Street (where the club is at), I saw someone run out of the corner porno shop with a bag under his arm, and tear down the street. He was followed shortly by a man I took to be the storeowner, and a police officer. (Don't know what the police officer was doing in the porno shop, but I'll leave that to your imagination.) They looked at the retreating back of the man, and looked at each other, and just stood there for a bit. Finally, the shopowner got pissed and yelled at the cop, "Chase him already", so the cop and another guy who came out of the store started after the guy, who now had about a half block head start. They rounded the corner and that's all I saw. Quite the nice neighborhood there. I remember the time I was walking out to my car and somebody called over, asking me if I wanted to buy some books. "Hey man, you want any books" he hissed. Now this was an odd street corner approach, so I was curious enough to look, and see this guy had a coat full of porno-books, so apparently its a common practice to rip them off from the store and then sell them around the corner. Still less unnerving than the crack addict who hung around my car. He and I commiserated about how unfair it was for the cops to take his crack pipe away. I somehow managed to say, with a straight face, that I thought that was completely unreasonable. No one should ever mess with a man's pipe. Oh yeah, I was going to a show. Well, Idaho was so-so. I saw them last year, in between Red House Painters and Heidi Berry, and liked them better then. Somehow they sounded much different than RHP last year, but sounded remarcably like them this year. There show didn't have the intensity and focus of the previous show, and just plodded on, lulling (or pounding) me to almost doze with my head on the moniters. The Cranes were kind of disappointing too. I'm unfamiliar with their albums, so maybe this wasn't a good intro to their music. The lead singer had a light, girlish voice, that was usually lost deep in the mix. The band pounded along, but used an excessive number of backing tapes, which seemed to drain the energy from them. There were about 2 songs that I particularly liked, and both of those were when the vocals became more audible. The band sounded like they might be interesting, but just didn't come across well. I also had incorrectly assumed they were from the United States, but found that to be wrong when they started speeking. Actually, they never really spoke to us at all, even during a 10 minute equipment failure, they mostly stood around looking uncomfortable. All told, they were on stage for only an hour, including encore and equipment problems, and made a pretty mediocre impression on me. And neither band ended songs, they just sort of fell apart, and began tuning for the next one. However, they were very liberal with free stuff, with stacks of posters, bumper stickers, and bumper sticker/post cards. So, if there are any Cranes fans out there, I have a black bumper sticker that says Cranes in yellow letters and loved in red letters, and a square postcard/sticker that has a picture of the band on it. I'll send them off to the first two people that tell me they want them (assuming that anyone wants them). Neal ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Tue, 14 Feb 1995 11:17:37 -0500 Subject: Where should I stand One thing I was curious about at the recent show I went to, was if it wouldn't have been much better if I'd been standing in a different location. I'm 5'7, and usually try to stay pretty close to the stage. This way I can see better, but may end up hearing only the moniters, or some part of the house speakers. Of course, I can also hear the people when they talk to each other, and sometimes even hear them singing outside the mic, which is cool. So I was wondering, is the sound usually worse up near the stage, and better in the middle of the club? Are there people out there who prefer to hang out somewhere other than front and center, and what advantages do they see to that? I usually just get frustrated if I can't see anything, but I also get annoyed when the mix is horrible. Thoughts? Neal ------------------------------ From: "Just another cambian in the shadows...." Remember I am by no means an expert. . .just a fly by night fan. The Cocteau Twins are an amazing band fronted by a women named Liz Frazier with one of the most beautifully unusual voices I have ever heard. Other members of the group currently are Robin Guthrie (who had a baby named Lucy Bell with Liz) and Simone Raymond. There sound has changed a lot over the years and has matured a lot in the last 5-6 years. My favorite album personally is "Heaven or Las Vegas" but "4 Calender Cafe" comes in a close second with "Blue Bell Knoll" in third. Every one of their albums are unique in their own way while maintaining that Cocteau feal. They were on 4ad records up until "4 Calender..." because they hated being pigeon-holed as a "4ad band". You can't go wrong with any Cocteau album but I would suggest picking up the three already mentioned first. . .Good luck. -Jacob Paul Leonard ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Tue, 14 Feb 1995 12:37:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: Much to my surprise A friend gives me old New Yorkers, and I was leaving through a bunch from the spring of 1993, when suddenly there was a full-page picture of Rebecca Pidgeon looking out at me. I'm going to this Saturdays show in San Francisco ;-) . Laurie Anderson Tour Information Tour Information In an article in the LA (Los Angeles) Reader, she said she would appear solo. So, I guess the "backup" musicians would be those that appeared on the latest album. She may also do minimalist versions of songs, with her doing "all the work" with keyboards, a synthesizer and tapes, as she did for the "Stories from the Nerve Bible" reading tour. She has backup voices named Fred, Agnes, and Ralph. Someone has pointed out that she is scheduled one night :in :San Francisco at the Warfield, a smaller venue that is not listed in the :tour schedule, and that the tickets to that one are being sold as :something like "An Evening with Laurie Anderson". That one sounds like it :is going to be more talk and less music and show. You know how Laurie is with titles! This show is very different from the small evening of readings from "Stories from the Nerve Bible" that she did last spring. The description is accurate. It's an incredible multi-media show. There are a few stories in there from the book, there are songs from Bright Red, there's an "oldie", lots of great stuff. An important point: The SF Warfield show is the same as the shows in Berkeley and the other shows. In fact, we've told them not to refer to is as "an evening with" anymore, so we don't inadvertantly mislead people. Note: Louisville and Indianapolis have switched dates. The confirmed status of these dates is true as far as we know. Some concert promoters are cautious and won't announce shows or put tickets on sale until our contracts are signed. That's up to them, but their staff and the theaters might therefore not know about the show as a result.
