It features short sets from S , Ginger, Rose Chronicles, Mystery Machine, Delerium and Brainbox (actually one of the last three is not playing, but I forget which, so it must be an important word, right?) Yesterday I went to see Go Fish, which was only my second movie in a year (the other was Latcho Drom), at a free lunchtime screening as part of outre festivities this week, and must recommend it, it was a lighthearted love story with thorns of pain/meaning mixed in. The parental rejection scene was the deepest thorn for me, and the cooking made me laugh the most. Anybody know who was on the soundtrack? (By the way, the soundtrack to Latcho Drom is also good.) Speaking of tea, this morning something funny (and unusual for me) happened. One of my orange quarters slipped from my grasp and plonked into my nearly full pint of tea, sloshing tea onto a pile of tapes on the table. I grimaced, but then quickly wiped off the tapes (no Sarah, but Hothouse Flowers: People, SOTW Save This House, Luka Bloom: Riverside, Jenny Allen: Something to Say, and Sue Medley: (first one)) and retrieved the orange. Then of course, I just had to put on the S song, that one by Cohen, track 13 on his Live CD. But wait, I don't know any Suzanne? Oh, s.o. mers (i.e., french your s.o. to get the sea blooming) (Later I also listened to that Sahara tune by the Police but that didn't work, besides I always hear a river in the SaraHa, dessert not desert, from lips of vintage '68. Any Ectophiles within striking distance of Copenhagen might be interested in an announcement I saw in today's newpaper: The First International Vocal Festival in Copenhagen is running from the 16th of February to the 10th of March. The festival consists of 17 concerts, focusing on traditional vocal techniques, and the combination of vocals and synthesizers. I haven't seen a real program for the festival as yet, but it looks *very* interesting (with quite a few female vocalists). The opening concert on Thursday features Tahir & Lalita (from North-India), Yuksel Isik (Turkey), Naze (Kurdistan), and Labib & Nasim (Palestine). All of these live in Denmark as refugees or immigrants. Some of the other names appearing during the festival are: The Bulgarian Voices - Angilete (a.k.a. Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares). Two church concerts, 17th and 18th Feb. Sainkho (Siberia; female vocalist) with Irene Becker (piano). Mari Boine (Lap; well-known on Ecto...) Lokua Kanza (Zaire) Electric Phoenix (Britain; reported as the vocalists' Kronos Quartet) Susan Deyhim (USA; vocals and samplers) with Phil Minton (vocal experiments). Meredith Monk (USA; performance) Palle Mikkelborg/Helen Davies + 5 vocalists (Denmark; jazzy) I have to locate a full program, who knows what else is hiding in the corners? I certainly hope to attend at least a few of these concerts, though I'm pretty busy at the moment... Hard to describe, but I love it, especially (on the CD when i first heard "undertow" i thought "good! someone finally explained to Lush that it is *not* boring to have the bass player play the same bar, over and over, for well-nigh 5 minutes. wow!" although it might leave poor Phil (or whoever's on bass these days) feeling a little short in the job satisfaction department. This is my first posting and I must say that I have enjoyed my first week on the ecto list. In particular, I'm excited about the new names I've been seeing of artists to check out. I want to respond to this prism video deal that's up. You say you're waiting for word from on high. I'm not sure who "on high" refers to in this particular situation, but my response is; if ON HIGH says "go ahead," what are you worried about? In the first place, who are asking - Prism or Happy? Are you concerned that Prism might say "okay" without checking with Happy first? I think you should definitely make an effort to make sure that she is contacted directly about this. IF Prism says "yes," that is. If they say no, than it doesn't matter. Actually, I think you should contact Happy's people about this yourself. Because, even if you don't get a go ahead to distribute this video, it will p ush the idea that such a video is WANTED - and that could yield very nice results. Anyway, I'm eager to hear the results of all this because I really, really would like a copy of a Happy performance video, and I will not be in the area to see, or tape, this show. Anyway, after I wrote my response I reread your request for help and noted that you had indeed attempted to make contact with Aural Gratification, which would presumably connect with Happy. So, that leaves me unclear as to what your concern really is. If the OFFICIAL APPROVAL route doesn't satisfy you, you still have another rule of thumb to follow: you said "Happy does not appreciate her live tapes being distributed except to ectophiles." Thus, the question is not whether to distribute but how to contain distribution to ectophilic circles. Speaking as a recent arrival, who probably doesn't qualify as "ectophile," this doesn't seem like it would be too difficult. My impression from this list is that there is a fairly tight group of people here, and so if you don't advertise but distribute only thru direct person-to-person channels, it shouldn't (I think) get out of control. This would leave me without a video, but the important thing is, of course, what Happy wants. It's her music, anyway. ------------------------------ From: jeffy@wam.umd.edu Date: Sat, 11 Feb 95 09:09:31 EST Subject: Re: Thanks, and asking fo... Long ago, there was a rule of thumb that if you didn't lurk on a newsgroup that had a strong sense of community for a couple of months, there was a *strong* probability that you'd post something that made no sense. Ecto's not a newsgroup, but it's had that strong sense of community for going on 4 years...and you're clearly not understanding a situation before making a rather long posting about it (taking your two posts as a single message). *Please* don't anyone think that I'm encouraging lurkers or newcomers not to post! Rather to make sure you understand the particular topic you're posting about or to address something to a single person and not the entire list. >This is all addressed to Bob L. - I forgot to state that in my previous >message but I think it's fairly obvious. Then perhaps personal e-mail would have been more appropriate? >Anyway, after I wrote my response I reread your request for help and noted >that you had indeed attempted to make contact with Aural Gratification, which >would presumably connect with Happy. A) Bob doesn't "attempt" to make contact with AG. He is *in* _constant_ contact with Suzanne White, Happy's manager. B) Aural Gratification, such as it is, consists of Kevin Bartlett, who founded the label, and Happy Rhodes. So far as I know, the label has only released two other artists (one whom I can't remember; the other was Mitch Elrod's Swim Team). I don't know the exact nature of the business agreement between Happy and Suzanne; Suzanne might be an employee of AG, she might be under contract to AG, etc. But any way you look at it, if you get in touch with AG, either by directly writing them or going through Suzanne, you can basically get in touch with Happy, at least by proxy. >rule of thumb to follow: you said "Happy does not appreciate her live tapes >being distributed except to ectophiles." Thus, the question is not whether >to distribute but how to contain distribution to ectophilic circles. The question *is* whether or not Happy wants us having a copy of the Prism show. After 3+ years here and plenty of experience with other newsgroups, there isn't much concern about how to handle the distribution aspects. Other than radio appearances, all "bootleg" Happy material (primarily meaning the Albany and Philly shows from '92) are distributed, through Doug Burk's ecto taping service, with Happy's blessing. She's given us permission as long as the distribution stays within ecto channels, and we've not abused that. What makes the Prism appearance different is several-fold. First, Happy's not happy with it, and from the reports that came back during and after the shows, this isn't terribly surprising. I don't think this has to do with something like an obsession that non-perfect material not be released Secondly, Happy's considering salvaging some of the material in a commercial way. This wasn't an issue with earlier stuff. >This would leave me without a video, but the important thing is, of course, >what Happy wants. It's her music, anyway. Yes, exactly. If nothing else, we try our damndest to support Happy. I don't know that anybody gives a shit what Prism thinks about the whole thing. Last night's "House of Blues" on TBS will be shown again *tonight*, Saturday the 11th, at midnight. This particular show featues Victoria Williams a(from LA) and They Might Be Giants (in New Orleans)...I found it humerous that the Cajun was in California and the New Yorkers were in Louisana... ;-) Anyway. THi. This show was *great*. Vic played a whole bunch of stuff from _Loose_, (including Century Tree, Crazy Mary, U R Loved, and some more), as well as "Opelousas" from _Happy Come Home_ and "Summer of Drugs" from _Swing the Statue_. Once again, Dave Pirner was along singing with her. Vic also talked a bit about her songwriting. I don't think TMBG had quite as much air time...bit o' interview, "Istanbul", and one or two other songs, I think. The show was an hour long, and is highly recommended. Incidentally, who the hell is Hal Willner? I've seen his name here a couple of times lately (in conjunction with Weill), and I noticed that he was the musical consultant for House of Blues. Finally, my sister, her boyfriend (...I jfirst typed "boyfiend", which is pretty fitting of the fella... ;-), and another friend or two. They went down to the basement, and 5 minutes later, I suddently realized that I'd better make sure they hadn't fiddled with the VCR. Fortunately, my sister had the sense to realize what I was doing, but not before her boyfriend had decided that Vic had hidden a cat somewhere and was secretly pulling its tail to produce those noises. I explained that yes, her voice *is* odd, but she's a great songwriter. Brian responded with, "Yeah, but I bet she and that cat make tons of money." "No, not really...she lost it all when she was diagnosed with MS." At which point one of the other friends got all excited. Apparently his mom has MS and he thought it was way cool to see a rock singer out there donig her stuff despite the disease. He got all defensive when Brian kept commenting about the cat. I'm sure Axle had about the same opinion of Vic as Brian, but he was still defending her. Pretty cool. ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. It's policy for me to lurk for a week before posting to a list, but I've been more or less lurking here for a lot longer than a week, and in all honesty, I still feel like I should just remain a lurker. But it is reassuring that David Dalton can show up here, and commence with the same thoughtful (albeit weird) messages he was legendary for on FTE, and seemingly fit right in without any problems or flames. So maybe there's hope for me. But on the other hand, I know not to "barge in" on a group of friends, which the core of Ecto seems to be. Hey, anyway. I don't wanna let myself feel discouraged from posting here. After all, FTE'ers recommended this list, after the World's Lamest Flamewar on FTE (about people unsubbing over all the off-topic traffic). So meanwhile, I'm still way off-topic on FTE, and I haven't said a damn thing here on Ecto, save to introduce myself and to say I had a copy of Tony Banks' Soundtracks and liked it. OK, here's a song for someone to identify. Heard it on (and taped it from) radio about 4 years ago, maybe longer. Female singer, accompanied by one (or two) acoustic guitars. Contains lyrics something like: "Me I'm underneath my pillow, me I'm trapped inside my brain..." "And I barely knew my name, my friends..." I could give you more lyrics than that, except 1) I have never been able to actually understand some of the lyrics, and 2) this is on one of about 80 homemade tapes I have laying around the house, and I have no idea which one it's on. (Somewhere between 20 and 50, I think...) Those lines above are the only ones I remember. BTW, Dalton, we're starting to miss you on FTE. I'm having to do more than my share of long, eccentric posts. A big reason for me to feel out of place: I have never heard Happy's music. I tried to find her CDs a couple months ago, at the record stores on Kirkwood (shatner's acting?) Avenue in Bloomington, and up until that time, I had thought those were among the best record stores around. But I was wrong. They did not have Happy, had never heard of Happy, and could only find one (BtC) in the computer, but did not even have that one. Haven't gone back to Bloomington in months (the weather, plus other excuses). And I had thought "Wuh hell, I don' need to buy none a' her stuff, I kin talk 'bout anything I want on here." Until Meredith (right person?) posted the article she found, which described Happy's influences and her music. A few words leaped out: Enya. Eno. Yes. Uh... time to make a trip back to the record store, if I knew the car could make it. Where can one find a discography of Happy? How many albums does she have, and how many years has she been in the biz? I'd ask what she sounds like, but if I can find a CD or two, I'll find out for myself. (Wouldn't it be cool if she's the one responsible for the lyrics I asked about above?) Now back to your regularly scheduled mailing list.
