If anyone else has further info, please say so! Well, you must know that she has written songs for everyone from Rod Stewart and Tina Turner to Agnetha Falkstog of ABBA. I know that the Knight-penned tune _Love touch_ that Rod Stewart did has Device as the backing band. As one of the more prolific hitwriting songwriters in pop music, it's interesting that she was never able to really go anywhere performing any of her own songs. It was great to see her there, and interesting to hear the studio version of the song. It shows her voice much more strongly, but I miss the simplicity of her live-performance style. I was a little surprised to notice that she is going by Jewel rather than Jewel Kilcher. I guess I thought that using her last name would ground the prettiness of her first name, but the label probably thought that she would stand out better just using her first name. As far as I know, Holly Knight started her career in the band Spider, who released two albums on Mike Chapman's Dreamland label, "Spider" and "Between the Lines" in the very early 80's. Good pop-rock is the best description (I love them). These albums contain the original versions of some songs you've heard of. "You Better Be Good to Me", later done by Tina Turner and "Change", later done by John Waite come immediately to mind but there are others. Something to note is that David Letterman's drummer Anton Fig was in this group as well. After Spider, Holly's next album was by her group Device; the album was called "22B3". Her next album was a solo album--don't know the title offhand--where she made her own version of "Love is a Battlefield", which she wrote for Pat Benatar. That's about all that comes to mind right now. Glad to be back on the list (seems that when the digest switched to majordomo, I was dropped-I thought it was just the usual digest backup). I call Idaho dirge grunge. But they do write good songs, and I like their album _Year After Year_ quite a bit. The newest one doesn't grab me quite as strongly. I like Idaho more for the overall sound, loads of feedback, big drums, lots of ambience, than for their lyrics or message or whatever. I like the wash of sound, the atmosphere, the deep voices. I *think* there's a reason for both _BtC_ and _The Walking_ having upside down spines: They were both printed in Canada. On the back cover of _BtC_, it says "Printed in Canada". And I'll eat my hat if your Siberry album isn't Canadian -- a U.S. copy of _The Walking_ is a very rare thing indeed, and most people prefer the Canadian version anyway, since it has longer versions of a couple of songs. Now *why* this would be the case I have no idea. But it's the only connection I can think of; especially considering what was said about European and Japanese CDs. Maybe it's like the "English" vs. Metric systems: the U.S. just insists on doing everything different from the rest of the world. And incidentally, I'm also going to the Tower Theater concert. I'm in deeper Sarah withdrawl, having last seen her at the WXPN Singer/Songwriter Festival in mid-July (it was free, but only a 30 or 40 minute set). Robin Guthrie's out and Mike Hedges is in at producer... except the band said they didn't like Hedges' production so Alan Moulder (yay!) got to do most or all of the final mixing. and it *shows*. it's still the same Lush icecream, but with a whole different topping than _spooky_, gone from something airy and smooth and creamy to something in sharp crunchy little bits. like going from, say, whipped cream to chopped M&Ms... from Cocteau Twins to Curve. but still it has moments of purepain-full beauty, and some nice string arrangements too, especially on "desire lines" and "when i die". there are at least two four-track singles, one for "desire lines", which i don't have here, and one for "hypocrite", which i do 'cause it's my favorite. it also has "love at first sight", "cat's chorus", and a *9+ minute* dancey/trancey remix of "undertow" (DJ Spooky) which i *love*. and (does this count?) i've seen, but haven't heard, a Lush / Jesus & Mary Chain boot from whichever lollapalooza that was. They released an album called SPLIT in 1994, and I think it's even better than SPOOKY -- better production and mixing, I think, and more suitable for cranking up the volume to get the whole textured sound. The main annoyance for me and BtC's "upside-down"ness is that I'll pull it out of the rack, rightside up for the writing but upside-down for the case, and try and open in the wrong way, causing me to wonder for a moment if I'm a victim of spontaneous crystal-case combustion (or at least fusing) until I remember that it's upside-down, curse, turn it over, open it, put the CD in the spinner, and then replace the CD in the rack. Actually, I really doubt that's it at all. If you check all your cds, you'll find that a large percentage of them will have been printed in Canada, and most of the will have the spines the usual way up. It's just a design thing. Some labels have it standard, and some don't and some make a mistake. Books do the same thing, but much more rarely. Sometimes people do it on purpose to be different, sometimes they're following a different standard, but usually it's just that whoever was doing the artwork for the printer put the spine on the wrong way around. I would bet that it's the smaller labels that do it the wrong way more often than the big labels do (if they ever do). - --Neile, in her desktop publisher mode ------------------------------ From: "Scott S. Split is definitely an album with going on and on about! It's one my top 3 faves of 1994! (steamkings, lush, heavenly all float around between 1, 2, 3...) (y'all *know* what Tori song this thread has gotten running through my head...) I have a heretical notion about the upside down spine labels...if you pry up the CD bed within the jewelbox, you can get at the spine/back/fore-edge label...from where you can either detach the fore-edge label and place it over the spine label, or detach the spine label, rotate it 180 degrees, and reattach it so it reads correctly... Jeff Wasilko was asking about Amy X Neuberg. I bought the disc and got the Racer Records sampler at the same time. I would say that the two songs on the sampler were among the best songs on the full album, but the album has other songs just as good. I love songs like "Forgot to Take Your Eyes Out Last Night" and "Real World". Some of the others are a little more forgettable, but these ones are great fun musically and lyrically, but have enough depth and echoes not to be silly. I love her voice. Drum machine warning, though, for those who can't stand them. To me they fit in with the music, but I know others on ecto don't feel the same way. Sorry, I'm getting worse and worse at describing music, but I heartily recommend Amy X Neuberg, and thank you to the ectophiles who mentioned her earlier and mjm who taped some of her songs for me. Apparently Amy X Neuberg is at work on her second album. On the basis of this previous one I will definitely buy it. For those of you who don't have Racer Records sampler yet, it's free. I've already passed my copy on to someone else who bought _Songs 91 to 86_ from it. Racer Records seems to be an interesting label that is the kind of thing I like to support.
