It's a generally unfavorable review complaining about the faddish inclusion of hordes of guest stars who aimlessly wonder across the disc. "There are, however, two wonderful exceptions. Sinead O'Connor's turns at the mike on "He Moved Through the Fair" and "Foggy Dew" conpensate for Veil's deficiencies. The latter song, a traditional paean to the Irish who died during the 1916 Easter uprising against England's occupying Black and Tans, is a far more effective stirrer-upper of anti-Brit sentiment than the Cranberries' simlarly themed "Zombie." " They seem to be full of Cranberries knocks lately. The above is from the Washington City Paper, while the same week in the Baltimore City Paper there were reviews of the latest Sinead and Cranberries albums. ROughly half of the article talks about the ridiculous quotas record companies have for female artists. I've seen talk of radio station regs prohibiting playing too many women artists in a row, but hadn't heard of record company quotas. They claimed that Magnapop was turned down by a major label because they already had too many female singers. They also hypothesized a record company/ press quota that only allows so many women in a given style. That's why Tori gets so much press, but recent Kate releases are now ignored. Tori has Kate's spot. Similarly so for the Cranberries stealing Sineads bald Irishwoman spot. They then very favorably review Sinead's album, and spend about a paragraph dismissing the Cranberries as bland and uninteresting, accept for Zombie. They end with quotes from Dolores about how Sinead was often too outspoken, and how her idea of doing something controversial was to wear a short skirt to her wedding. There was also a pretty cool photo collage of the cranberries standing in front of Sinead's face, wichi appeared to have them in the foreground, but really had Sinead looming over everything. I thought they were pretty unfair to the Cranberries, but had some valid points about perceptions by record companies and the press. Trying to portray Sinead as daring and bold while attempting to demonstrate how the Cranberries poorly compare to her almost seem to reinforce the author's point. There wasn't room in his list for both groups. Well, actually i think he was just exagerating his complaints in his effort to highly praise Universal Mother, but I don't think it was all that effective. Neal ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Tue, 31 Jan 1995 17:34:07 -0500 Subject: where's Belly? Amidst all the Throwing Muses hoopla, does anyone know about the new Belly album? I saw some mention of it somewhere, but hadn't heard anything about it (like if it's out or not). They could perhaps compliment each other quite well by releasing both albums around the same time. Or maybe Belly will take over the Throwing Muses slot, and cause them to be overlooked. Pravatiner" Date: Tue, 31 Jan 95 19:58:40 EST Subject: Phair dinkum and other stories I was probably one of the first on this list to discover _Exile in Guyville_. I like Liz Phair's music because of her ability to refuse to suffer fools gladly, without being disagreeable about it. My review of _EiG_, BTW, is in the Ectophiles Guide to Good Music, however that can be accessed at the moment. I read Vickie's flame-retardant post with some curiosity. While nobody enjoys being flamed, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to speculate on what Britni could come up with in terms of the Perfect Squelch to my verbal intricacies on this, the alt.callahans of music mailing lists. I suppose that at the very minimum, it would take a post on my part that wasn't over her head, most of my posts apparently being over the heads of most readers of these pages, to inspire such one-liners :-). Camille Paglia was on the Charlie Rose show last night, though I only caught the last half on account of having watched _To Have and Have Not_ on the other channel. She spoke, among other things, of her affinity for Madonna. I have gotten to wondering what she would make of Liz Phair. Anyone have any ideas? Happy Chinese New Year. Happy Western New Month. Just a few quick notes, some of which I hope to elaborate on later... Caught Katell Keineg *and* Over The Rhine on the World Cafe last night. Wowza. Could someone in the actual WXPN listening area tell me when this originally aired, so I can finally figure out what sort of a schedule WFUV broadcasts the show on? Thanks. Anyway, both interviews and live performances were great, and yes, we taped them. :) The universe seems to be getting back on track, seeing as we completely and utterly botched recording Loreena McKennitt's "living room concert" on Echoes last week. Sigh. So this Kurt Weill tribute thing was televised on PBS??? It was on the radio here (WNYC FM), but not on TV. Which is just as well I guess, since it's the music I was interested in anyway, but it's interesting that it wasn't shown in this area. Mary Margaret O'Hara too weird?!? Oh please. Speaking of radio simulcasts, the Joni Mitchell concert last Thursday was wonderful. I'm finding myself becoming increasingly interested in her work, since I'm hearing more of it on the radio, the early stuff especially. _Blue_ was one of the first CDs I ever owned and I practically wore it out the year I was in Europe, but I haven't bought anything else of hers earlier than _Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm_, which I bought on tape when it first came out because I loved the song "Snakes And Ladders" and had to own it. I think I'm going to have to get _Heijira_ soon, though... WFUV keeps playing tracks from it, and I'm coming to worship Jaco Pastorius' bass. :) (Interesting sidenote: Jaco's brother Rory is also a musician, and records under the moniker Rock Michaels Pastorius. He still lives in the Melbourne, Florida area and is somewhat of a local celebrity down that way, though I've never heard much of his stuff... I did like what I heard, though.) I think I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone that Tori Amos is a farking goddess, and if you don't believe me, well poo poo on you. (Gee, guess what Meredith is listening to? :) Went magazine-perusing this afternoon. Brought home the current issues of B-Side and Performing Songwriter, both of which feature interviews with Vic- toria Williams, but I haven't read either of them yet. I did notice that both features had the same photos, though. :) I also saw, but didn't buy, the current issue of Billboard, wherein the "Music To My Ears" column (the one that brought you the rave review quotes on every American copy of _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_, yes, all million-plus of them :) this week is about Dar Williams. Aside from the fact that the article states that she graduated from "Wesleyan College" and goes on to deconstruct the Peter Pan imagery inthe song "When I Was A Boy" down to utter silliness, it's a great little feature, and should do wonders for Dar's career. _The Honesty Room_ has been picked up by a small folk label, and will be reissued nationwide in February. Do check it out... it's your basic girl-mit-guitar fare, but it's intelligent stuff, and besides, Katryna and Nerissa Nields sing backup on some songs. :) If you despise Kennedy of eMpTV infamy, then I'd advise you to avoid the current issue of Us Magazine at all costs. Not only is there a multi=page interview, but *two* nude photos. Ick. She has a cute little elephant tattoo on her groin though, I must say. (I picked up the magazine to read the interview with Helen Hunt, who is about as yummy as one can get without melting in direct sunlight, *not* Kennedy, so don't go thinking that about me, okay???) Oh- I did notice while paging through the B-Side magazine that there is a half-page ad for _The Line, The Cross, And The Curve_ in there. Strange. I'll post more thoroughly about this later, but I wanted to note that Laurie Anderson's Nerve Bible show is great, definitely a fine piece of work, and if she brings it to your vicinity, do *not* miss it, no matter what. There's even a segment in it for us net.weenies. :> Countdown To The Bottom Line: T-minus 24 Meredith meth@delphi.com "How do you tell a Laconian from a Freudian?" This was truly a captivity that transcends rescue. Every song they played, *without* exception, was brilliant. Alone, Noa has an exceptionally strong and versatile vocal range and delivery -- at moments brash, at others fragile and vulnerable, sometimes bordering on operatic, sometimes the essence of folk. And, this lady, 24 years old raised in the Bronx / moved to Israel at age (almost) 17 (!), is talented -- did I mention that? She has a theatricality about her, a grace and easiness that compels with every note, *and* she is a fabulous percussionist. At one point she played a bongos and drums solo (no sticks, all hands -- she plays her chest too at various points) that was blinding. And then there's Gil Dor. GILDOR. One letter for each string of his guitar. This man is, and I am not one to hyberbolize (:-), he is one of the best guitar players I have ever seen. With my trusty binoculars I ogled this giant with my body hushed in reverence. It's not just that he's a technically perfect player, but the arrangements and accompinents for those songs were in a word breathtaking. I spoke to Gil after the show and he said he's had all types of training and experience from pop to rock to classical to folk to jazz; from bands to ensembles to sessions to studios, and so on. The classical guitar stylings were perhaps the strongest to show through... the frictionless, flawless transitioning from chord to note to cadence to phrase to everything was seamless and effortless. Less is more. Gil Dor is a graceful guitar player, an eloquent guitar accompanist, understated, humble, gentle, genuine. Like butter. Alright, the accolades are certainly flowing today but they are well-deserved. Unfortunately I did not get a tour schedule, but I believe they are doing a midwest tour now (I think the next dates are Indiana and Michigan). If you love music, and I'll bet you do, then you will love Noa and Gil. Go out of your way to see them. The CDs (3), somewhat hard to come by, are good, but they are mere shadows of the live performance. Their latest, _Noa_, is co-produced by Pat Metheny. These two are going places, friends, and they will (I suspect) be on Letterman or Leno or one of those shows before the end of the year. Not to be missed. - -speechlessandmesmorizedmjm ------------------------------ From: Mike Mendelson Date: 31 Jan 95 14:24:48 EST Subject: Pat Barber |check this out (Vickie, take note).
