Relph" Subject: Jane Siberry I just came across this article in the latest issue of Tower Records _Pulse!_ magazine (or is that `ragazine'?). Just for grins (written by Tom Lanham): Talking with Jane Siberry is a lot like jumping headfirst into the _Cat in the Hat_ Cartoon world of Dr. Seuss, where fish drive cars and foxes know the alphabet. In fact, rather than discuss her latest Reprise record, _When I Was a Boy_, she beings to analyze Jean Cocteau's surrealist masterpiece, _Beauty and the Beast_. ``I was just thinking about that movie the other day, and I think it really influenced me as an artist,'' she says, in a Tinkerbell-tiny voice. ``I remember the arms sticking out of the wall holding candles, and you think, `Yes, of course the world should be made of this. *Everything* should,' because that's more real than what you really see.'' In the past, Siberry has applied her breathy, diaphanous voice and almost new-age musical bent to such songs as ``Everything Reminds Me of My Dog'' (``Sometimes I won't know what to do, and I'll think what *he* would do,'' she says of her dog, Wolfgang). This time, the quiescent Canadian conjures up both mystical and natural soundscapes like ``Sail Across The Water'' (a track produced by longtime fan Brian Eno), ``Calling All Angels'' and ``All the Candles in the World.'' Listen once, and you're lulled into this singer's verbally vibrant world, and there's no turning back. ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1993 22:40:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: IRC me, baby Hi! I just paid attention to the menus I see scrolling past me on this system every day, and I have noticed that Delphi supports IRC. They even tell you how to use it, how nice of them. My wallet is screaming at me for asking this, but can someone in the know point me to where you all hang out over there, and when? I must confess that I've never really absorbed all the IRC talk that's been going on around here recently, since I didn't think I had a way to access it, but now that I see that I do, I'd like to stop by sometime when people are over there. On Monday we refinanced our home, dropping our interest rate 5% just in time to offset a property tax reassessment increase of 55%! Somehow we still come out with a net cash savings of $250 a month, so hopefully some of that can find its way to a few new CDs! (After we amortize those pesky closing costs!) Later this morning my brother in law will be getting married. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Turkey, where he met his fiance. He left the service some time ago, and we all worked to get Angel a visa to come over here and get married - and today is the day. They'll have a civil ceremony this morning, then everyone will come here for the reception. The only sad thing here is that her family couldn't be here; however before he left Turkey they had a big engagement party. I've been tapped as The Photographer. Time to dust off the Nikon and hope an f/1.8 lens is fast enough - we don't have a flash! As you may notice, this is not a society affair, but it is very real and exciting! The newlyweds are heading for Niagra Falls after the reception. So if I've had a slightly lower presence here of late, this has hopefully explained it. I have been keeping up with ecto - no 850 message backlog! Hi Chris, I still have your Box o'stuff - things have been a bit wild since you left. I should be able to get it in the post ere long, fear not. Glad to see you have an account over there! Welcome to new ectophiles - Rob, I believe! All I can tell you is that this fuzzy blue list is comprised of a wonderful batch of people, very supportive and low in flame content. We gather here under the stunning auspices of the music of Happy Rhodes to share information with each other. Life is good. The only other lists to which I subscribe are a shortwve radio list and a bass player's list. Ecto is enough to keep me busy for the time I have alloted to play on Deepspace. Well, I gotta go get ready for a wedding. Talk to you all a little later! Eleven!! Man, either you're *really* young or I'm *really* old. (well, I know how old you are, but this statement still kind of shocked me. eeeep.) I was in Tower Chicago the other day and I picked up Kirsty MacColl's CD5 for My Affair. This is probably over a year old already, but the Olive Groove mix of said song is super and rocky. And Don't Go Near the Water & All the Tears that I Cried are typical Kirsty. I would gladly and willingly mortgage my dog's first litter to get my hands on a sound recording of her pre-kite album Desperate Characters, which has the Billy Bragg New England cover on it. Does anyone have this album? Is it available in the UK? Did it ever get onto CD? etc. etc. Everything I've ever heard from MacColl I've loved. Her voice is expressive, telling, and just cynical enough to always give a unique edge to the music. Wish she'd tour sometime. I thought I was buying the new DCD album (I know I looked at it) but I must have picked up A Passage in Time by mistake. Is there anything on there that's not on other albums? Does anyone who might not have access to this music yet want to buy it from me? I got it at a pretty good price: $10.99. I'm bummed because I did not want to have to go back to Tower, but I guess I will (to get the new one). I also picked up Liege and Lief at Record City, along with the new Patty Larkin. As was recommended, L&L is great. Any other Fairport suggestions out there? Is it worth picking up the Richard Thompson 3-CD thing or would it be better to get FC CDs first? Whoever suggested it was right: I do like the combination of RT's guitar and SD's voice. When/why did she die again? For those familiar with Larkin, her new one (Angels Running) is I think better than Tango. If you are into Shawn Colvin you might want to give it a try. She's a little more understated, but has a good sense of humor and plays guitar well. |mjm says: |>And hey, how 'bout them Expos? |yup, they sure looked good the other night against them braves. :-) 18-5. |Baseball sure is a beautiful game. Magic number 9. Well, they looked pretty good vs. the phillies. It's just dumb luck that they had to play the hottest team in the NL right at the end of the season. The phillies lucked out. Keith silvers: |OK, I can't contain my curiousity any longer. Does anybody know if the Cool |Thing in O'Hare is the same or similar to the Cool Thing in Logan (Boston)? I've been wondering about what exactly the Cool Thing is. Last time I was there I went to the United Term. to try to spot it. Is it the light show over the moving sidewalk at the bottom of the escalator? That was pretty cool (a great e.g. of American Decadence, to waste all that money like that... or is it *art*? :-). Is that it vickie, or is it something else? Jeanne fishes: |Shark's song...well I was sort of surprised at it being called shark song. |I thought I gave it a title. Originally it was part of "the kite" poem, |but it seemingly broke off somewhere. Are you sure it was part of the Kite poem? You know what we ought to do: look it up in the time-honored ecto archives! Because I know you posted all that stuff on ecto way back when. Is there an easy way to search for things in the archives, Jessica? I know there was a title for this, but I lost the original post, so just called it by your name for ease of reference. There is nothing else quite like _Liege & Lief_. In the world. Certainly not in Fairport's canon. They did a couple of other songs like it, but the albums themselves aren't like it. I couldn't quite recommend another Fairport album, though I do like _Glady's Leap_ and some of the others a lot. I would recommend Richard & Linda Thompson's _Shoot Out The Lights_ for rocking stuff and _Pour Down Like Silver_ and _I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight_, but they're not trad. songs. The box set is great and certainly shows Richard Thompson's songwriting and guitar playing talents (and the progression of both). I'm also very fond of Richard THompson's first solo album, _Henry the Human Fly_. Actually, from _Liege & Lief_ you might want to go directly to the Sandy Denny box set, which has more of the comination with RT's guitar and her voice. Of her solo albums I would most highly recommend _Sandy_ and _The Raven and the North Star Grassmen_. And there's always _Fotheringay_ by the band she formed of that name, which definitely would be a good follow up to L&L even if there's not much Thompson on it. Avoid Richard & Linda Thompson _First Light_, and if you hate over-produced stuff avoid Sandy Denny's _Rendezvous_ and _Like an Old Fashioned Waltz_, though it might be fun to compare her version of "Candle In The Wind" with KaTe's and Elton John's). In other words, Liege & Lief is the pinnacle. Other stuff is different, with its own strengths and interest. Sandy & Richard are wonderful (in varying degrees) no matter what they're doing (exceptions existing but being few). Fairport has gone through so many changes it's hard to recommend any particular album other than Leige and Lief a thousand times. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu (Forgive any convoluted sentences.
