No. I think it was the only album too. The song that made it to MTV was "We Are What We Are" and is rather good I think. I like several of the other songs quite a lot as well including "All the Love" (no connection to Kate), and "All Day, All Night". I find myself listening to it fairly often. I can't imagine it's magneto-optical based... not unless they've improved the technology a lot since last I heard - it simply wouldn't be fast enough! Someone asked if anthony was reading via a newsgroup - the answer is yes. A newsgroup local to his site. I don't want ecto to be a newsgroup. However I don't mind newsgroups at sites where either the users aren't aloowed to get mailing lists, but are required to have news groups set up for them (this isn't as uncommon as you mgiht think) *or* if there are enough people on ecto at one site who prefer to read ecto via a newsgroup that it's practical. It is neccesary (to me :) that these newsgroups be local to the site they are at only. They are *not* redistributed outside of the site where the ectophile(s) is(are). And completely by cooincidence, I have jsut set up a rutgers newsgroup for ecto. It will not be distributed outside of rutgers. only rutgers people can read or post to it. For those of you at rutgers who don't already know.. the newsgroup is ru.rec.ecto. If your news server doesn't have the group yet (probably the case in newark, but who knows) just ask whoever gets asked such things up there.. you can point them at me if they have questions. they all owe me favors anyway. now, on to non-happy content: KATE! yesterday i got Eat the Music and Rubberband Girl. I'd heard rubberband girl via the telephone at katemas. it sounded pretty awful. however, hearing it now on cd.... i LOVE it.. utterly love this song. I tihnk I like the remix better... but it's close, I like them both. I also compeltely adore Big Stripey Lie. It's sooooo weird and yummy sounding. mmmmm. i might like it beter than rubberband girl, though rubberband girl is lots of fun to bounce to. *boing* (or should i say *twang*). Eat the Music I liek a lot. I might even love it, though i don't liek the music itself as much as like the other two (especially big stripey lie). the words and voice are great though. mmmm some more! candle in the wind I don't hate as much as i used to.. but i absolutely can *NOT* understand what it is doing on the single. how strange. (wasn't it released here on the rocketman single? I don't tihnk my rocketman is a UK release.. i coudl be confused.. ) anyway, i'm looking forward to this album!! i don't recall all fo the other songs we heard at katemas. you relal yoculdn't hear them very well. if we heard eat the music and/or big stripey lie, i didn't rememebr any of it. Other things I've gotten and liked recently: the cranberries (first i borrowed it from woj.. I liked it enough to buy it - kind of reminded me of all about eve, not *quite* as good.. but different, unique in their way, *lots* of fun to sing to while working or driving.). the story: i'd heard at least 4 different songs form this album on the radio (WXPN out of philly). I liked them all. I had liked some things from the first album but didn't relaly like it overall, it didn't stick with me. At first listen to the album itself, I was worried. I'd really liked what i'd heard on the radio and had higher expectaitons. However, by the time i'd heard the album in it's entirety a few times, I was compeltely hoked (still am). there are some great songs on it. i don't realy like the last one (fatso in a silly version, in spanish), but other than i that i love almost every song. pj harvey: I'd heard dry a long while ago and liked it a lot but never bought the album. Finally i borrowed rid of me from woj, and liked that a lot too. Finally i bought dry, but at the same time i bough the kate singles so i haven't even *listened* to it yet. However, I knwo i like this. yum yum. very unique. i read an interview (in rolling stone) with her, and she said it frustrates her that people don't seem to pay any attention to her vocals, 'cause she puts the most work into them and is really proud of thme. However, I happen to think they're great and they're my favorite part. kiaro-skuro: I've no idea if you can get this outside of new brunswick. Look for it. it's worth it. Sara, who sings and writes the msuic, (and plays guitar), is heavily influenced by Cocteau Twins. (she has a compeltely different voice, very low and earth, but her vocal style is somewhat similar. You don't need to know what the words are.. she wants to get across something wit hthe emotion and feeling of them. the music itself is a little darker and heavier, it's never light and airy, but the melodies are the sort that pull you along, they move). I bought this a year ago. It was stolen in montreal. :( I just bought it again, finally. And of course (Ok, so this message *does* have happy content) I picked up RhodeSongs. yum yum. i love the pictures inside. It is a great honor for joe to have one of his photos from the philly concert included. I like "Summer" a lot. yum. the album as a whole is not so special to me and I'd mostly rather just lsiten to all of the albums themselves :) but it is *definitely* worth having, and the non-album songs/versions-of-songs on it are of course, amazing. (I haven't bought so many CDs as this *since* the CD theft in montreal last october. In fact, except for one or two "neccessary" CD's (well, they all seemed neccessary :( all of my favorites), this is the first major CD shopping I've done since then. I'm feeling pretty happy right now.. except I did have to put *back* several things I'd picked out.. i still am limited cash-wise of course... ) aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway, i can't beelive i've written so much in such a rambly way.. but it is because i am still awake from yesterday with no hope for sleep in sight any time soon. I have had a very strange day, and it was all ok 'til i realised that the car i ended up with the morning (and it was a real hassle in some ways, to get it (i had to do a lot of driving, though i didn't mind 'cause i love driving, especially with music, and the car i had last night had a cd player. ). anyway, i finally go to leave again this morning and discover that the *key* to the car I have today, is *not* within 20 miles of me. aaaaaaaaaaaaargh. I can not beleive this happen. no, i take it back. i beleive it. you, reading this, probably don't. You probably can't even imagine how this happened... i'm not sure *i* can imagine it and I did it :) (well greg helped, or should i say, failed to help :) *sigh*. i am to be rescued though, I just got a call, they are on their way to get me. (greg and patricia, not the people to take me away to the funny farm, that's later this week I am sure). *sigh* again. I want to sleep for a week. I tihnk I'll do so, before I write anything again :) jessica ======================================================================== From: "Michael Blackmore" Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1993 09:37:03 EST Subject: Re: My Own Humble Opinion Drewcifer, > The "Goddess-idol" thing was implied, you see...I'm afraid that it was > abundantly clear that the expectations you accused the Love-Hounds of having > were of never-fail legendary achievements. Do you deny that there is a trend on Gaffa to have high expecations for Kate's music? I personally don't care if you're an exception to the rule. That nice. Great. Wonderful even. As for "badly produced, repetitive, and uninspired"...I'll be the first to acknowledge that it's not my favorite Kate song or even my favorite version of the song. I wouldn't called it any of those. It might be more accurate to say it was produced the way you like it and it didn't inspire you. The whole point of this little discussion that several people actually liked the song, but hadn't said so on Gaffa because they weren't relishing be flamed for disagreeing with the majority opinion. None of these people knew that others liked the song. One person said something on Ecto and others started coming out and expressing the agreement. Guess what the flames start here! What is it in you that you can't accept that someone likes something you hate? Why can't you simply dislike/hate a song and state that fact without launching at attack on those who do and a tirade on attacking the song? It only your opinion Meredith. Do you *really* think so? After listening to BSL for about half an hour yesterday, I am certain it is not anything like the Dreaming, for many reasons, but mostly because of the highly monotonous and uninteresting drum program in the background. This is the problem with ETM as well (though I don't think it's as bad as some people say... just taken alone it may be tedious but in the context of the album it should be fine -- certainly not the most annoying kate song in my book [title deleted to avoid silly controversy -- hint -- it has roman numerals in it :-]) What Kate seems to have gotten away from more and more is the shocking, creative genius that takes songs through unpredictable twists and turns, both in instrumentation, BVs, Vs, even lyrics, and definitely melodies. Even BSL has that incessant drone in the background. I wish she would mix it up a bit! Make it more interesting!
