You're in luck, then, I think. They have at least one other album, earlier than _This Island_, and Grace has been doing a fair bit of jazz and blues work recently and has popped up on several records, notably the soundtrack for a TV show called "Come In Spinner". Once again, I'll research more and get back to you. :) (I can probably pick up Eurogliders stuff here quite cheaply now; I'd be willing to bet that their albums are on budget CD. I'll check this evening.) > I believe both bands were Australian. Hey Anthony, you're the big-time > music reviewer, know anything about these folks? :) :-) Big time? I wish! There's some cool music coming out of the Happy Valley. Check out Cordelia's Dad, a group from Amherst on the OKRA label, who do thrashed-up versions of traditional Irish and other ballads. They appear at the Iron Horse all the time. (Rumor was they moved to Hoboken, but I'm not sure- they're still around quite a bit.) I'm trying to remember the name of this band of Amherst High School students who put a tape out that's for sale at the area record stores... Broken English? No, I don't think so... argh! Anyway, the keyboardist is my best friend's little brother, and it's not bad stuff. If I remember the name, I'll let you know. I will admit there's probably not enough to make a sampler tape, but it's not a total musical wasteland in Western Massachusetts! Excuse me, but I take grave exception to that. I don't have unreasonably high expectations of Kate's music, thank you very much. I do, however, expect her to produce music that is better than 98% of what is out there today. Considering the state of popular music right about now, I don't think that's a very high expectation at all. I find it impossible to "sit back and enjoy" a piece of music that I find to be badly produced, repetitive, and uninspired. If I were able to do this, then I'd be perfectly happy with KC101, and I wouldn't be here with you today. }I don't want to be lumped in to the "they'll uncritically adore }anything she releases" category because I don't feel I fit }there. Sorry, Jeff, but if you keep making statements like the one above, it's going to be hard to keep yourself out of that category. If I think a song sucks, then I'm going to say it sucks. I'm not going to force myself to worship it just because it came from the studio of the goddess. It pains me deeply to go "euwwww" at something Kate has done, since I never ever thought it would happen, but it has, and I'm just going to have to deal with it. And while I fervently hope this never happens, if Tori's second album blows chunks or Sarah's next one is infantile or I find "Summer" to be quite below par, I'm not going to refrain from saying so just to keep other people happy. }I love ETM and the remix. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I happen to disagree with you. Can't we just leave it at that? }Big Stripey Lie is, um, interesting. The next day, looking through Ecto and L-H, I }wasn't disappointed. Druk had already panned ETM and given high }praise to BSL. meth did basically the same thing. I'm not waiting for another _The Dreaming_. To do so would be a long wait indeed, and would be quite silly. Where's my time machine! Yes, Finlandia is to Finland what Va Pensero (sp) is to Italy...a classical piece with the emotions of the people that were completely adopted (unofficially) by the people. It is said that when Verdi died, hundreds of thousands of people came to his funeral, and at the end, they spontaneously started singing Va Pensero for hours. Finlandia is a wonderful piece, bouncing from sad to happy with a background of oppressive horns representing the looming oppression of Russia always in the background. By the way, it was also the piece that they rolled the credits of Die Hard II over. And the rest sounds wonderful as well, by the way, don't get me wrong :-) I love Dylan's old stuff. (Although I was devastated when I found that "I Want You" by Sophie B Hawkins was a Dylan cover (Images of Dylan crooning "I Want You" ruin the whole feeling) Thanks Jen! I listened to it the first time, and liked three songs a fair amount, the rest was ok. After 4 more listens, I would have to say that I like 5 songs individually, and the album as a whole listening experience a lot. I prefer it over Juliana Hatfield's new album (which is ok, but not anywhere as interesting as the first album, with a couple exceptions). This Breeders sounds somewhat reminiscent of Curve. Cracker's new album is taking me a while to get up to speed on, but I'm getting there.
