Are those the 3" CDs or are they not > even compatible with the normal CD format? Time for me to slip into technophile mode... :) MiniDisc is the recordable optical disc format developed by Sony. It uses the same principle as CD but the discs are not cross-compatible. MiniDiscs come in a cartridge casing similar to that used on 3.5 inch computer floppies, and they are recordable - lengths of 60 and 74 mnutes are available. The sound is recorded digitally but compression is used, and a technical measuring of the specs will reveal the quality to be slightly inferior to CD. This difference, though, is all but inaudible to most listeners. The advantage of MD over the rival DCC recordable digital tape format (from Philips, this also uses compression) and my personal format of choice (i.e. I was one of the brave few that bought one!), DAT, is that MiniDisc recordings can be played like a CD - you can random-access tracks, and they don't wear out. DAT, by the way, is pure digital and is still cheaper than MD and DCC in terms of both machine and tape costs. This will no doubt change. DAT will always be around as a semi-professional format, but will now never gain commercial acceptance. My bet for Format To Succeed is MiniDisc. > Overall I think this year's MTV's awards had a much more positive > atmosphere. Last year had a lot of bands playing that have apathetic > and/or self-destructive attitudes. This year had stuff like Lenny We still had Pearl Jam doing that hoary old "smash-the-instruments" routine. I hate that. There are people I know that would love to make music if only they could afford a guitar, and here are these overpaid musicians on TV making some kind of "statement" (WHAT, exactly? That they're as rebellious as The Who?) by destroying their instruments. And the mike stand wasn't even theirs to destroy! I liked the various TV shows they got to do the nomination announcements. The Melrose Place one was hilarious... :-) > Faith", Spin Doctor's "Two Princes", REM's "Everybody Hurts", etc. > (Hope I got song titles correct.) I've been observing for a few days, getting a feel of it, and it seems pretty cool (not that y'all need my stamp of approval...) A couple of questions for Vickie and those other Chicagoan folks... I'm a grad student in Chicago, and for the year I've been here I've been mostly wrapped up in my own little study-world, without a lot of time for music- exploring. So, 1) Where would be a good place for me to dash right off to to get some Happy Rhodes stuff? I haven't heard anything of hers, and I feel like I've been sorely lacking, from hearing what you guys have to say. Ecto was recommended to me mainly on my Kate-interest, and it seems here that Kate-interest and Happy-interest go hand in hand. 2) Jessica's friend made some mention that you (Vickie) work at a radio station WZRD out of Chicago? I'm painfully unfamiliar with that! Please let me know freq, broadcast location, and range so I can try to pick it up some time. I usually stick with XRT or Q101, but both of those are somewhat flawed (I miss DJing in college!) That's about it now - thanks in advance for any help. I just read the past 6 digests. *GAK*! ...and of course I don't recall who said what... Run out *now*, folks, and check out any one of the many fine recordings of Messaien's "Quartet for the End of Time". If memory serves, he wrote it while imprisoned in a concentration camp, and it's quite haunting. (But everybody *knows* that the greatest organ composer of all time is Keith Jarrett B-] B-] B-].) My hair, for the record, is just past shoulder length, and quite curly. I'm planning to leave it long for as long as I can. I also loved CITW. Kate's vocal sounds somehow naive in a charming way. Joey Spampinato (sp?) formerly (?) NRBQ's bassist, was recently picked to replace Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones. I just picked up a copy of a book by John Berger named "And our faces, my heart, brief as photos". It'll be interesting to see what relation it bears to the Story song. I pulled out the tape, and checked the end credits; Mary plays "Mrs Brunowski", a character in the play "Destry Rides Again" that Beverly D'Angelo's character stars in, and is not on screen for very long. Incidentally, according to Leonard Maltin's "Movie And Video Guide 1994" that just landed in my eagerly awaiting hands yesterday, "The Miracle" is available on videotape (but not disc) in the US. If you can't find it, I can do a copy of mine for you, but be aware that it's a PAL version...
