I can see that you probably meant that now, but your sentence is a bit awkward in structure. I'm just curious how you separate expectations from analysis (I'm not claiming that anyone can), but you make it a point that your opinion of the song is independent of your expectations. I'm personally envious of such impartiality, and hope that I can achieve someday too. :) > approach. This is not the Goddess-idol expectation to which you refer; it's > merely the same expectation I have from every competent musician. I never refer to any "Goddess-idol expectation". Doesn't appear in any of my posts. I gather you pulled it from the ether or your own thoughts. Now let's just say we agree to disagree and move on. Vickie responded: |> And while I'm sort of on the subject, where does one look for |> Ingrid Karklins albums too? | |I'd imagine she's be in the regular pop section since it's not an import |in the US. When I bought this at Chicago Tower it took 1/2 hour and 5 sales boobs to figure out where it was. It was in the international section, *on the floor*. So that's the first place I'd look. It absolutely was not in the regular pop section. I assume they might have placed it under Latvia or something near-ridiculous like that. Good luck!!! |Rubberband Girl Subway Poster [...] Could you post a brief description of this? I bought the Sensual World one from your friend in KC, and it was way cool. (Still is.) I'll probably get this one too. I had the pleasure of talking to the now infamous (from gaffa) Bill Buchholtz, who works at a CD store a block from my apt. in Evanston, IL, called Dr. Wax. I was shocked to see him there because it used to be Record Exchange, and I thought he'd left after it changed to Dr. Wax. He is a big Kate fan, and also a Happy Rhodes fan, though is having some trouble getting Happy exposed in the store [hour-long tale of zealotry deleted to protect all parties]. Anyways, I told him that Rhodesongs offered all the songs from the CD-5 and he said he'd look out for it. He was clearly misinformed when he told me that no CD5's from Kate were out yet. So far I have not seen any such imports, though I haven't looked much. I presume Tower would have one. Alot of things clicked from my conversation with Bill and I'm glad I was able to meet him. In the long run he should be a good Happy ally in Chicago, though for now he has a rather sour taste in his mouth and not without reason. And that's *truly* unfortunate. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 18:34:47 -0400 (EDT) From: "she listens like her head's on fire.." Subject: Funky Jane and Other STories Hello all! The girl in the studio next to mine has excellent taste in music and did a dub of Jane Siberry's When I Was A Boy for me this afternoon. so...I slipped Jane into my walkman and grooved on down to the record store to pick up Rhodesongs (which took a half hour of me cajoling the store people to have it transferred to this branch so I could get it in my eager fingers.) Clutching my 5 dollar discount in my grubby paws I grabbed it and ....hey! no monsters! but a very nice photo... but. what is with this purple? ;-) anyway I turned and saw Kate! they had the single and since news had reached me that the cd was delayed until january (grrrr) I grabbed it. Its just been too long. so I sit here with it poised in the cd player for my first ever listen of Eat the Music (I start with Kate cause jane put me in a funky mood!) and... hey, I could go for some big tropical drinks right now... its sort of fun but I dread listening to the extended mix right now.... eek! whoa! this is more like it. let the wierdness in.... :-) I think I'm going to like the new album...after the initial "what the hell" as I try to figure just what shes done this time. okay, I really like Big Stripey lie right now though I can take or leave Eat the Music. I already have Candle in The Wind because I bought the Rocketman cd single. hey, what can I say? 4 years? give me a break... katefans must be crazy.. :-) now to check out happy.. I'm basically going to check out the stuff I haven't heard yet... I must say I love her voice on the acoustic versions. Given in is quite wonderful... I can drift away on this stuff... okay, I'll stop with the stream of conciousness nonsense and get down to some coherent thoughts. Its nice collection of music and I hope lots of people buy it. I like the new versions of Given In, Save Our Souls (like this alot!), In Hiding (perhaps not as much as the Warpaint version ) Summer is great. I can see how it reminds some of The Pool but this has more structure as a song. ugh, time to get off the computer....people expecting calls and such but wow, I like Summer. later -Quenby ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 16:39:16 -0600 (MDT) From: KELLY BAKER Subject: Re: Card-informers > You know, Kinkos does card things cheaply, > so perhaps we could each individually do a few to > give out (send out a format), > because that would erase postage. > > comments? > > -seanympf well i work in a printshop (alphagraphics) and i'm a graphic designer.... :) kelly ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 18:52:39 -0400 (EDT) From: ROBNPAM@delphi.com Subject: Mitch Elrod's Swim Team Just wanted to stop in and second Bob's suggestion that Ectophiles check out Mitch's new album. I've actually received a fair bit of mail about this. :-) I rang EMI to ask them, and the consensus there is that they have no idea. They suggested I ask Margot when I interview her...! Being on EMI as it is, I'd say it's quite likely that the album will make it overseas; in the US, Capitol has first option on all EMI material, but whether they choose to exercise that option is another thing altogether. I doubt it'll see a release in the US before the year is out, but anything is possible. If I hear anything more, I'll let you all know. As I've mentioned before, I'd be happy to pick up a copy of the album for those who want one. And I'll make sure I buy it at a chart store...! Hairlo there: Perhaps I was listening to Samuel Barber too much, but yes I did get a haircut. All of them, actually. And while I didn't have long long long long long hair (shoulder lenghth), I just felt like a change. My personal preference is to very long hair. My stylist had it in one of those 90's cuts where there's nothing on the sides, and I couldn't relate to it. I am a creature of the 70's and like my long hair to be long all over, so now when I grow it in again I can grow it in a more comfortable manner. For the nonce I am enjoying the relative shortness as a change. My hair (which is hopelessly silver, I should say) remains lengthy on top. I'm told it's stylish... What do I know? Wow, lots of varied discussion these days. Drewcifer and Yngve differ a lot on Equipoise, Kate's new stuff is controversial, and nobody has mentioned Mitch Elrod (not me). Lots of posts. My closing is on Monday the 20th. Refinancing is fun! :P Everybody have fun; enjoy the weekend! NRBQ stands for "New Rhythm and Blues Quartet." I'm quite surprised that more people on ecto aren't familiar with them as they have a VERY devoted cult following. They're not my cup of tea, but they play Baltimore/Washington quite a lot including the Earth Day fest last spring. They play a mishmash of rock/jazz/country/blues, and have been around since 1969. Probably their best known song is "Me and the Boys," which gets a lot of airplay on WHFS here. They also do a lot of novelty numbers, like "Howard Johnson's Got His Ho-Jo Workin'" and "RC Cola and a Moon Pie." For further study, a two-volume best-of is available from Rhino Records.
