But maybe it is just too early and word hasn't gotten around yet... but the Olympia is where Loreena McKennitt played in 1992, so it should be an appropriate venue for DCD... On DCD's 1989 tour, when they hit Montreal it was at the Spectrum, an abomonible venue since they keep the heat way up, to force you to buy drinks to stay cool, and the drinks are being sold all through the concert, distracting people from the show. This is gonna be a Klaus, so fasten your seat belts... I hope all the American 'Philes had a nice Labor Day weekend and, in true Labor Day fashion, thoroughly enjoyed the day off. :) Stopped by the local Sam Goody on my way home today, but no evidence of RhodeSongs. I did get into a small argument with an employee about the horrendously inaccurate upcoming release dates on the board in the front of the store, which list _The Red Shoes_ as out next Tuesday (we wish), Dead Can Dance as "maybe sometime this year" and Cocteau Twins and Sarah McLachlan not at all. I wish I'd had a red markerboard pen. Grrr. So, Angelos, you're not alone in not having any luck finding yourself a copy- I'll be lucky if I can find one in a store around here at all, at this rate. }HB to MT btw. TY. :) woj reports: }over the weekend, i received a package from the deejay who sent }me varttina's first album containing (amongst other things) the }album _dolla_ by angelin tyto"t - three women singers from }lappland. i'm in the middle of listening to it now and it's }quite good. Hey, didn't All Things Considered do a spot on this trio just a couple weeks ago? I remember hearing something about Lapps and ritual singing... Incidentally, Mitch, I was wondering if you were listening on Friday when ATC did the spot on Ranch Rodeo and thinking the same thing I was thinking. Glad to see I was right. :) Did anyone hear the fake radio talk show collage they aired at the end of the show yesterday evening? I was driving back from New Jersey at the time, and came dangerously close to going off the road more than once. Yngve wonders: }In the list of artists there is one Madder Rose, which looks }like a name of a group, but in my catalogue there is listed an }artist called Rose Maddox. Strange - Should Madder Rose be Rose }Maddox? :) Nope. They're a band that belongs right where they are- opening for the likes of Juliana Hatfield and The Sundays, which is how I got to see them play. They were good: your basic made-for- college-radio guitar-based group with male and female vocals. Not a speck of originality in them, but they're quite enjoyable. Court (Hey!!! Welcome back!!!) writes: }Anyone hear further plans concerning Atlanta?? If so..please }write!! Kiri...whatdayathink?? Call Valerie unless she is }already reading this again!! Well, Valerie read the tour dates over my shoulder at casa woj y footah over the weekend and made me forward them to her Atlanta account, so I'm 99.99% sure she's planning to go. I'm sure if you give her a ring in the next week or so she may even have firmed up her plans even more. (Hell, she may actually have resubscribed to ecto by then!) Incidentally, since the New York Dead Can Dance dates are both in mid-week, making it next to impossible for me to make it down for a show, I'm seriously considering the Philly show on Saturday, October 30. Any area 'Philes also considering this? Any of you like to scrape me (and woj- he'll be seeing them in NYC but I'm sure he won't mind seeing them more than once in one week :) up a ticket or two? Please e-mail me if yes to either question. Neil implores: }Could someone either repost or send me the Dead Can Dance Tour }info, since I foolishly didn't save it anywhere? Thanks. Surely. I know others who lost the post as well, so here you all go! (Based on subsequent posts, I've gone ahead and made a couple of! adjustments.) >Oct >20 Atlanta Roxy >22 Washington DC Lizner >24 Montreal Theatre Olympia >25 Ontario Music Hall >27,28 New York Town Hall >29 Boston TBA >30 Philadelphia TLC >Nov >2 Chicago Vic >4 Denver Ogden >7 San Francisco Zellerbach >8 LA Royce hall >11 Seattle Moore >12 Vancouver Vogue And now, to my version of what transpired this past Sunday at the latest New York/New Jersey Ectogathering... (Mike, it was great to finally meet you!!!) To provide more of the sordid details, the day involved driving out to Spring Valley, NY to pick Mike up, then trekking into NYC and actually finding a place to park in Greenwich Village. It was evening, and we had a few hours to wait until we were scheduled to meet footah, Jess and Joe (who were having an interesting time at the Liberty Science Center across the river) at the best, and most improbably inexpensive Italian restaurant I've ever been in, on Bleecker Street. This time was spent in wandering around, finding a place at which to sate Valerie's monster craving for Chinese food, and hatching A Plot To Be Named Later (watch these pages) on West St. near the spot where some of the best interview footage from the documentary _Paris Is Burning_ was filmed. As the time drew near to approach the restaurant we discovered a small but excellent CD store across the way, and we came away with some finds- I finally got Culture Club's _Kissing To Be Clever_ on CD (so I'm a child of the early 80's, sue me- Val is the one who was singing Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet lyrics the whole time we were standing in line to get into the restaurant, NOT me!), Valerie found the original American edition of _Duran Duran_ on vinyl, and I discovered the _Toys_ soundtrack on CD for a whopping $1.99. woj got some CD singles, I'm not sure which. Dinner can only be described as amazingly wonderfully yummy. Yum. After finding footah's favorite cafe to further stuff ourselves with dessert, it was time to take Mike back to Spring Valley, at which point we realized that we had gained a footah during the proceedings, since Jessica and Joe, with whom he had spent the day and gotten a ride, had gone home. The Chevrolet Cavalier is a great car, but don't try to nominate it for any awards for backseat legroom. I believe mjm put it best when he typed: }we picked up another person to add to the gaggle of wesleyan }women in the backseat, and it wasn't a real huge car). "gaggle of Wesleyan women". I like that. :) All I can say is, we were *all* lucky that Val is as small as she is! (Hey, Mike, you didn't seem to be having too hard of a time stuck in the middle of the action, did you? ;) (I must add at this point that one of the people in the party was my best friend Shura, who is not on the net, but has lived my musical obsessions vicariously through me for years now, and is somewhat of a veteran of ectogatherings, having also attended the Wesleyan fest back in the spring of '92 and New Year's Eve from one end of New Jersey to the other with me, woj, footah, and Jess, this past year. She should be used to this by now, but I'm going to have to wait a few more days before I dare ask her opinion of the goings-on on Sunday in the back seat of that Chevy! ;) So yes, a good time was had by all, and once again I recommend ectogatherings for anyone who is in a position to be able to attend one, no matter where you are. But whatever you do, don't forget to clue the rest of us in on the sordid details after- wards! Our purpose is simple: To get the music of Happy Rhodes in every household in America and on every radio station as soon as possible, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. Formed recently in a secret convocation somewhere along the East Coast, the first mission of the HRRF will be as follows: - To send a letter of intent to every recording company in the United States demanding that Happy Rhodes be awarded a hand- some, lucrative recording contract by one of the target companies by the end of the 1993 calendar year. Said contract must include 100% artistic freedom, and must contain the condition that she record a solo cover of "Don't Give Up" for inclusion on her next album. - To state clearly and unequivocally in said letter of intent that the consequence of non compliance to the demands of the letter be the destruction of many notable Manhattan landmarks, starting with the Capitol Records building and moving uptown from there. Our goal is, at the very least, to get the name of Happy Rhodes on the tongues of everyone in America, in the hope that her music will not be far behind in entering American ears. We sincerely hope that our demands will be met without unnecessary destruction to property and human life, but we do understand that extreme measures may be necessary in attaining our goal. Applications for membership into the HRRF and donations of support should be forwarded to sheik@terrorist.org. We thank you for your attention, and ask that you wish us luck in our endeavors. We should form a caravan to travel to New Orleans and overwhelm Titipino's with Ectophiles. One Ectophile per _Interview With A Vampire_ cast and crew member, and at least 10 more to surround Neil Jordan and we'll each slip him an Equipoise at various times during the concert. Someone's got to bring a portable CD player & headphones so he can hear "He Will Come/The Flight" right then and there (well, not while Mary's on stage though.) Then we can get down to business: > - To send a letter of intent to every recording company in the > United States demanding that Happy Rhodes be awarded a hand- > some, lucrative recording contract by one of the target > companies by the end of the 1993 calendar year. Strange - Should Madder Rose be Rose Maddox? :) You've already had this answered, but I wanted to throw in a few words about Rose Maddox. I love her, but she's hardly Ectofodder. She's a country swing artist who started singing with her brothers in 1937, when she was 11 years old. They became famous in the 40's and 50's as "Maddox Brothers and Rose." "The Maddox Brothers And Rose were one of the most important bands in country music history. Not only were they a pioneer family group, their unique style brought together elements of traditional folk and gospel music, hillbilly jazz, swing and early rockabilly. Their exuberant good-time music was a heroic expression of the human spirit in the face of depression, war and dislocation. They brought fun, good music, and great entertainment to a people who needed it desperately." (From the liner notes of Maddox Brothers & Rose, Columbia Historic Edition LP FC39997, by Charlie Seemann of the Country Music Foundation) I've got 2 Maddox Brothers & Rose LPs, & 1 Rose Maddox LP (she went solo in the late 50s) but I've never seen them on CD. Maddox Brothers & Rose, Columbia Historic Edition FC39997 Maddox Brothers & Rose, 1946-1951 Volume 1, Arhoolie 5016 Rose Maddox, Sing A Little Song Of Heartache, Pickwick/Capitol JS-6163 I must say that I like the Bro & Rose albums best, because those guys really knew how to swing! I listen to very little "country" music, but bluegrass, rockabilly and country swing? Man, I *LOVE* that stuff! I love playing it on my show, preceeded or followed by something like Danielle Dax or Nina Hagen...keeps people on their toes :-) Just a little history lesson...
